We fucked up royally with Danieal Manning, BBPB. The guy was awesome and didn't allow a touchdown on his side of the field during the 2010 season. Getting rid of him and Chris Harris losing a step really hurt the secondary. The former causality, not re-signing Manning, was yet another stupid mistake on the part of Jerry Angelo.

Dags I was very upset when Angelo chose not to resign Manning. The Texans didn't give him crazy money and Manning was very solid back there and of course great on ST. He finally found a home in our secondary and Angelo let him walk. It was one of the worst personnel moves since he traded Thomas Jones.

Manning may have gotten better coaching at his position after he left here. I'm not saying that was the case, but that is also a possibility in terms of why he got better. I honestly don't know, but I haven't seen much progression in either Conte or Wright. I'm not talking about a player coming in and playing lights out (as I hope Hardin will do). I'm talking about taking a player with potential and making him a great player. I don;t think that any of the coaches can take too much credit for making Urlacher a great linebacker. He was that when he got here. I mean real player development.

I think Hoke is a solid secondary coach. I don't know where people get off saying that all of our coaches suck because they don't.

No, of course not. But I have no idea if the safeties coach (Hoke I guess) is any good. i don't think much of our Wr coach, and didn't think much of our last few QB coaches (although I like this one). Toub and Marinelli are top of the food chain.
I'm not a huge Lovie fan, but for different reasons than have been given.
We've got good ones and we've got not so good ones. I just have no clue about Hoke. I am just going by Manning not getting better here and then doing so elsewhere and the current crop of safeties (who I think have talent) not having progressed much. Co-incidence. Maybe. I just don't believe in real long stretches of co-incidence.

I'd say Hoke is above average. I don't believe he has the ability to make turds shine though and I think he would do better at developing talent than Drake. I think he had a bit to say about getting some secondary help in this years draft if I were betting.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

Manning had a very good 2010 and played very well in the playoffs that year. We developed him and he went to the Texans as a polished player.

You think? I never saw him that way. I kept seeing him as a guy who had great potential but never fully realized it. I'd almost say he was doing his best work on special teams. I don't think the Bears would have let him go if they felt he had "arrived". Just my thoughts on it. God knows I'm never wrong....

I think that Jerry Angelo tried too hard to find a Mike Brown equivalent and really lost sight of some of the talent they already had on the roster. He jerked Manning around too much. First tried him out as a corner then moved him from one safety spot to the next and then miscalculated badly by letting Manning go. Angelo let him go because of the same reason he traded Thomas Jones for essentially nothing. Just straight up stupid personnel moves that didn't make sense and that were about saving a few bucks. That's my take on it.

No doubt dumping Dman was a mistake After spending years coaching him up and seeing him finally start to scratch the surface of his potential, we let him walk. He was the stability we lack at safety and while $5M per was tad rich for his one really solid contract year, he really appears to have finally settled into a position and the culmination of all the work on his technique is paying off. I am very excited about our young cast there, but we absolutely NEED that stability at S to make the most of our system.
