Bears QB coach Bates bullish on Cutler

Bears QB coach Bates bullish on Cutler

New Chicago Bears quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates knows Jay Cutler as well as anyone, having worked with him in Denver for three years.

Upon reuniting with Cutler this spring, Bates likes what he sees. Specifically, he sees a quarterback who has grown.

“I think he's still the same quarterback,” Bates said. “He has a great arm. I think the experience of any profession or anything you do, the more times you do it you grow with it -- both good and bad. So he's definitely more mature as a player because he's had good games, bad games and you get better every game. The more experiences, the more snaps, you're always going to get better at your craft.”

Bates called Cutler a “great talent,” and a “Pro Bowl quarterback.” The only time Cutler was a Pro Bowl quarterback was the one year Bates was calling plays in Denver.

“He loves football,” Bates said. “He's super intelligent. He can make all the throws. He's athletic and he comes to work every day.”

Because Cutler is so intelligent, Bears coaches likely will hold little back from him. Under Mike Martz, for instance, the Bears didn’t audible a lot. That sounds as if it might change under Mike Tice and Bates.

"We're going to give him a lot of clubs to hit, if you will, and we're going to keep practicing every day and see what clubs we like to play with on Sunday [Sept. 9] against Indy,” Bates said.

Bates also is being reunited with former Broncos receiver and new Bear Brandon Marshall.

“It's good having Brandon,” he said. “I was with him for almost three years also. He's a big target. You like to have those big targets. He's a hard worker, can get in and out of cuts. It's going to be fun to have those two together again.”

I am so completely happy that the Bears finally hired Bates as his QB coach. I don't know what took them so long and why they fiddled around with all that other stuff. Bates is the only coach he ever played for who made him into a pro-bowl QB and that will happen again.

Cutler and Bates were on the verge of finally winning over Bronco fans and making them forget about Elway when Shanny got fired and McDipshit got hired. Pat Bowlen should be kicking himself in the ass over that decision right now because if he hadn't done that Cutler and Bates would still be in Denver and they may have actually made it to a Super Bowl if they could have repaired their defense on the fly.

I'm excited as all hell to see them back together and Marshall too since I got to see first hand what this combo looked like in Denver and both Marshall and Cutler were far less experienced and mature in both their attitudes and their game than they are now. You guys are gonna like they way this will go down this year. Marshall is a beast and can catch just about anything you throw to him and when you add two more guys who can really catch the football like Bennett and Jeffrey our passing game just improved by about 150%.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I agree Soul. They have finally set Cutler up for success. And believe all the pieces are finally in place for this offense to put fear in every team in the league. Forte is the only one that can screw things up if he does the unthinkable.

I believe that Cutler trade will haunt the Broncos for a very long time. I don't share the optimism that so many have with Peyton Manning.

We don't even NEED Forte to win big time. Want him yes, but need him, no.

I remember back in the 80's when Todd Bell and and Al Harris who were the Bears starting SS and LB/DE held out before the 1985 season over a similar salary dispute. Guess who didn't get their Super Bowl rings.

Wilbur Marshall took over at LB, the Bears moved Dan Hampton from DT back to DE, and Dave Duerson took over for Bell. Eventually those guys returned but they never got their starting jobs back. Like Lovie said, it's not about just one person.

The thing about Peyton Manning is that while he can move around in the pocket, he is not a scrambling quarterback like Cutler, and therefore if he doesn't have good pass protection, he's going to get killed. Denver doesn't have a really good offensive line, and I think Peyton is going to struggle more in Denver than he did in Indianapolis.

This is one of the few times that we'll agree to disagree Soul. Forte adds a whole new dimension to this offense. Bush eases the blow if Forte wants to get dumb, but his presence on the field is going to be crucial if we want to go all the way.

That is the problem with the Manning gamble. He's always been at his best when he doesn't get put on his back. Can DEN keep him off his back? Is there going to be the same magic in DEN that there was in IND? I don't believe they even make the playoffs. That's how embarassing this is going to be.

Denver's line is good enough to give him protection. If he didn't think it was I don't think he'd be here.
