I know from what I've read for the past month that Blanchard would make a fine backup at least on the practice squad.
It will be interesting to see how this plays out. The Bear's have some chance of keeping McCown as the "at home" backup QB since he was out of football last year, is now a year older and might only be released (if he *is* released) with the late cuts (no time to learn another system). And even if signed by another team to a one year contract he still might be available to the Bears as the 2013 backup (as, of course, it is possible Campbell will be).

I hope once of the Enderle/Blanchard pair looks so good that they force the release of McCown. E/B would be cheap and Bears for 3/4 years (at the Bears option) and might constitute some real value. If not, both are PS eligible and that would allow McCown to stay on the roster and, we hope, develop as a good option for the 2013+ back-up role. The Bears QB situation is very solid. ... oh for all those lost years wandering in the bad-QB wilderness.

Well the nice thing about McCown Roch is that his vet minimum contract, even though for more money, only counts about $450k against the cap so he's cheap insurance as a #3 and also as a guy who can help coach the young guys a bit at least in terms of reading defenses and such.

I really don't mind having him around this year but we do need a kid in the hopper coming up the street competing for a backup role. Martz did a crappy job with Hanie and as a result we had to go with a very expensive option in Campbell for this year. It would be nice to avoid that in coming years but that only happens when we can develop a young guy well enough to trust him as a #2. We didn't do that with Hanie and we paid the price. Emery isn't about to let that happen again.

Getting Campbell was well worth the price in my opinion. We essentially have two starters on our roster. i would keep him as long as I could.

Enderle did nothing to impress me last preseason and I think he's the absolute wrong type of QB for the Bears. I'm hoping Blanchard might stick as a developmental guy and then become a backup or 3rd string by next year. Both McCown and Campbell are only one one year deals.
Exactly what I was hoping too, Soul.

I really hope they will keep QB Matt Blanchard and WR Joseph Anderson on the practice squad. Blanchard could become a reliable backup and Anderson kinda reminds me of Bennett. Maybe they both can make it to the final roster in 2013, who knows?

Well one year may be as long as we can or the very reason you state in your second sentence. If he get a chance to go somewhere where he has a shot at starting then he'll probably sign there. $3.5 mil is a steep price to pay for a guy you hope you won't have to use.

Do you think that there's a chance that his asking price will ultimately be driven down for two reasons: 1) Because he flunked out as the starting quarterback for both the Redskins and the Raiders, and 2) Because he is now a backup, teams aren't going to want to pay him an exorbitant amount of money to play that role nor will they want him as their starting quarterback?

Flunking out playing for the Skins isn't exactly a black mark on your record as far as I'm concerned. Brady couldn't win with that team. He got replaced in Oakland because he got hurt and with what the Raiders paid to get Palmer they weren't gonna make him #2.

Right now Campbell may be the best #2 in all of football and he's plenty good enough to start for a lot of teams. His lifetime QB rating is over 80.0, he's thrown 75 career TD's to only 50 picks and he's never had a season where he hasn't thrown for more TD's than picks.

    He can play.

It will still be interesting to see what will happen, though, after this season is up. Emery may want to bite the bullet and sign Campbell on as the richest #2 hired gun in the league. Right now, I don't know too many situations out in the league in which Campbell would fit. Almost every franchise has an establish quarterback of some sort, with the exception of the Cardinals, that I can think of.

He'd be looking for a place where he could compete for a #1 spot and Chicago is not that place.
