The Chicago Bears cleared roster space for the seven players who earned contracts after tryouts at rookie minicamp over the weekend by waiving tackle Levi Horn, guard Reggie Stephens and tight end Andre Smith.
The Bears announced Sunday that seven players had agreed to terms on three-year contracts: Wisconsin-Whitewater quarterback Matt Blanchard, Texas Southern wide receiver Joseph Anderson, Illinois State tight end Brandon Venson, Concordia tackle Tyler Hendrickson, Central Florida guard Nick Pieschel, Boston College punter Ryan Quigley and Connecticut kicker David Teggart.
The team needed to release three players to add all seven and remain under the 90-man roster limit. The team currently has 89 players on the roster.
Horn spent most of the last two seasons on the practice squad. Stephens was signed to the practice squad last Nov. 8. Smith was an undrafted free agent from Virginia Tech last season. He spent part of the season on the practice squad.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I'm not exactly happy they released Andre Smith but if he doesn't sign on somewhere else that doesn't mean he might not be back. Horn is no biggie except he was OT depth and we're already overstocked at OG so we won't miss Stephens. No great shakes here.

Could've been worse. What did you guys like Smith for again?

He's an inline blocking TE who looked very good last preseason. I thought he'd be a less expensive alternative to Spaeth but apparently Tice disagrees.

dime a dozen bums no biggie

I don't know, we are paying one of those dime-a-dozen blocking TEs $2.2M this year and the Titans just gave Craig Stevens a 4-year $15M deal. Spaeth never impressed me last season, his pass blocking is solid but he was poor on the move in any situation, namely run blocking. Andre was a rather incredible run blocker last PS, especially on stretch and power plays, I would have liked to see him get a real shot to unseat Spaeth.

Yeah I knew you wouldn't be happy with that news either sox. There's always a chance they told him to standby for a reversal of fortunes. Sometimes they just find guys they want more time to evaluate and they need to clear room on the roster so these guys can come and go and come again when they're still at that PS level. I'd rather have Smith at less than $500k than Speath at $2.2 mil.
Edit: Your point about his blocking on the move is well taken. It was his man who submarined his block and took out Forte's knee in the KC game.

Spaeth is massive and is a very good blocker in the run game. He's like another lineman out there so he's worth the $.

And we always need another kicker.
