Cutler allowed to audible again
Chicago Bears' Jay Cutler allowed to audible again - NFL.com
Cutler gets the power to audible under new Bears O-staff
With Mike Tice replacing Mike Martz as the Chicago Bears offensive coordinator, and Jeremy Bates aboard as quarterbacks coach, Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune reports that Jay Cutler will be afforded a luxury he has not had the last two seasons: the ability to change plays at the line of scrimmage. The inability to audible under Martz received national attention last October when Cutler was displeased with the coordinator's play-call and NBC's overhead cameras caught the quarterback directing an expletive at Martz as the Bears approached the line of scrimmage. In his two seasons under Martz, Cutler passed for over 5,500 yards and 36 touchdowns in 25 games, but his accuracy and production steadily declined while his sacks and games missed due to injury increased. Cutler has been reunited with Bates, who called the plays in the quarterback's final season with the Denver Broncos in 2008, when he went to his one and only Pro Bowl. The Bears also added wideout Brandon Marshall, Cutler's top target from his Broncos days. Bates said he plans to get back to those Broncos techniques, erasing the backpedal from center under Martz, with plans to make Cutler a moving, mobile target.

I don't think it's so much a luxury as a necessity in this day and age. Can't wait to see the rollouts and more SG instead of those long drops.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

This may be the frosting on the offensive cake. Cutler is a sharp guy and you're right shorty, audibles are a necessity in today's game. This is just more good news.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I just listened to the interview with Bates that Pompei got this idea from and Bates did not come right out and say that. He said they intend to give Jay a lot of "clubs to hit with" and as they develop this offense that's one that is being considered as well. Not that it won't happen but this is great example of how sportswriters sometimes hear what they want to hear not exactly what was said.

Soul, in an interview with Tice earlier in the winter, he said that Cutler would not only be audibling, but would be moving around in the pocket on boot legs and roll outs as well.

I'm simply pointing out that Pompei just wrote this piece from comments made by Bates following a rookie camp session and what Bates said was what I wrote. It's not about what Tice might have said earlier it was about what Bates said the other day, and Pompei put his own slant on it. I'm not saying it won't happen I'm just pointing out how writers can put words in peoples mouths in order to get the headline they want. Just sayin'.

The fact that an NFL QB being allowed to audible makes people so happy is just the cherry on top of the diarrhea sundae that was Martz' time with us.
