Esiason: Bears would appeal to Cowher

NFL analyst Boomer Esiason shared his thoughts Monday on the Chicago Bears' need to commit to the passing game and whether he ever could envision Bill Cowher coming out of retirement and perhaps pacing the Soldier Field sidelines.

“The only two coaching spots that I think that he would ever come out of retirement for ... one would be the New York Giants and the other one would be the Chicago Bears, because he’s that type of guy,” Esiason said of Cowher, his CBS Sports colleague, on "The McNeil and Spiegel Show" on WSCR-AM 670.

“Being so close to him over the last few years and watching him go through his total personal-life upheaval with the death of his wife and watching how he’s handled that with great dignity and professionalism, I’m just telling you, there is no dirt on that man. This guy is as good as he seems. He’s everything that you’d expect him to be.”

Esiason was asked what he expected from the Bears' offense this season with wide receivers Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery added to quarterback Jay Cutler's arsenal.

"To me, it really comes down to Mike Tice,” said Esiason, referring to the Bears' new offensive coordinator. “Is Mike Tice going to be (stuck) in tradition, and run the ball and keeping it simple, or is he going to spread it out and join the rest of the NFL and utilize the new weapons that they have? It’s great to have weapons, but if your coaches and your coaching staff can’t put those weapons in positions where they can win and actually go out and get a championship, then it doesn’t really matter who you have."

Esiason said the kind of modern NFL offense on display in places such as Green Bay and New England needs to be embraced in Chicago.

"The traditional way of doing things in the NFL has gone by the wayside," Esiason said. "I know that Mike Tice, a former offensive line coach and all this other nonsense, is going to be about protection first and running the ball. You're going to win your share of games doing that ... but if you want to join the NFL, in this day and age, you'd better spread it out and learn to throw effectively. ... And I'm not sure that's in his DNA makeup.

"You've got to throw the ball, and you've got to throw the ball effectively. And you've got to do it at least 25 to 35 times a game. It’s not about running the ball 25 times and playing defense. I know you have a great running back there in Matt Forte, but if you want to win, if you want to get to the next level, your quarterback and your offense have gotta do it.”
I'm not as down on Lovie as a lot of people, but I think Cowher would make an excellent Bears coach. Players respect Lovie, but he's too unemotional and seemingly detached.

Anyway, I hope Lovie and the Bears will go all the way and win that trophy down in NOrleans. Then we don't even need to start speculating about his replacement.

    Go Bears!

I have mixed feelings on Cowher. Sometimes the game passes these old successful coaches by. As far as what the Bears have put together now...this is without a doubt the best team that Lovie Bear has had to work with. Fellas this is the year they have to make that SB run and I think Cutler is going to shut the mouths of his critics once and for all. This is the year. Every fabric of my being feels this is the year.

I think in general Cutler is regarded as a decent or better than decent QB, but I think he is far better than that. I agree that he will open some eyes this year. If he gets some protection, he could jump right in the mix with the very best. I think he is an excellent QB.

Well we all find Lovie somewhat unemotional but detached isn't a word that I think even vaguely relates to him. Lovie knows what's going on around him always he just doesn't react to things in the same way we're accustomed to seeing from NFL coaches. I've been down on him for this at times but more recently I've seen the way his way of reacting is reflected in his players. Especially the defensive guys.

They never get down or play themselves out of a game no matter what may be happening on the other side of the ball. They look at it like their job is to keep the team in the game, stop the other guy from scoring and give the offense or ST's a chance to win it and lacking that they'll play to get you turnovers and try to win it themselves. Lovie has a purpose and he's not much into wasted effort or emotion if it doesn't line up with his purpose and that's simply to win games. I think he's very single minded that way.

Lovie doesn't fit our vision of a winning Bears coach because he doesn't have the "fire and brimstone" style of coaching that Halas and Ditka had. It's taken me years to get used to him because I liked Halas and Ditka's ways of doing things yet slowly Lovie is proving there is another way. He's a pretty level guy emotionally and winners can do it that way to. He let's his guys express most of the emotion for him but they're also a lot like him in that they seems to possess that steely determination to go out and win.

I still think Lovie will be the Bears HC for quite a while longer even if he doesn't take us to or win a Super Bowl immediately. His players love him and they give him 100% effort in every game, the McCaskey's like him because he goes about his job without a lot of fanfare that detracts from the team itself, and I think Phil Emery has a trust and and appreciation for what he can do as a HC. He's putting his own neck on the line with some pretty bold moves this offseason all calculated to get Lovie the team he needs to win with big time.

If Lovie were to leave I guess Bill Cowher would be pretty high on my list of potential candidates for the job. I think he could come to Chicago and build a tradition of winning but I'm not ready to give up on Lovie just yet. He's been winning pretty well over the years with about half a team when compared to some of the others and I think he deserves a decent shot at seeing what he can do with all of the holes filled rather than just half of them. I may not always like his style but I do respect him as a HC.

I'll tell you this Soul, I personally never liked that "fire and brimstone" crap from coaches. It got real old with Ditka and I just don't believe that acting like a fool like that is good for players. I think Lovie has really become a very good coach. Yea some may laugh at that statement but he's really come a long way as a coach. And I believe he's going to be hoisting up a trophy this season if all goes according to plan. Our defense's elder statesmans know the window is closing and they need to give it all they got this year.

Lovie's sideline antics remind me on Tom Landry, sorta. But his post game statements, really. If your not going to really say anything, then DONT, STFU. Plus some in-game things he does too, drive me nuts. Other wise (as long as he's not talking) hes ok. Ican live with him, seen worse. ( Denver anyone? LMFAO )

    EDIT: Minus the hat too.

Well Ditka started out OK but eventually he got so addicted to it that it's become legend. More caricature than character after the persona of "DaCoach" was born. At what point did he stop coaching and just focus on being the high profile NFL figure and "sound bite" he's become today? Halas had it but was a little more reserved in how he displayed it. More like a constant flame to Ditka's five alarm fire with explosions.

I think Lovie is an acquired taste and Chicago has had to get used to that. He's not gonna appeal to everyone because he's not the blue collar, pork chops and "Grabowski's" kind of person Ditka was and until Lovie wins a SB that's who he'll always be compared to.

Bellichick never really says anything either. And I would rank him as one of the better coaches in league history

Fuck this noise. I hope Lovie is our coach until his retirement because that means the Chicago Bears would be winning titles. Anything that happens beyond this year is whatever, but right now, Lovie Smith is the guy I am rooting for 100%.
