    Cutler Isn't Worried About Forte Being a No Show....Matt Forte’s contract s

Matt Forte’s contract situation doesn’t worry Jay Cutler

    BY SEAN JENSEN sjensen@suntimes.com May 14, 2012 9:22PM
    Cutler
    quick hits

On his thumb: “Good, good. No problems. Didn’t really throw a lot in the offseason, rehabbed a little bit and it felt good
    day one.”

On looking leaner: “Maybe it’s just the jacket. Maybe it’s a different cut. You know what? I feel good. I’m at a good weight for me.”

On fatherhood: “Very excited. It’s a fun time for Kristin [Cavallari] and myself, and we’re just enjoying every day.”

    Updated: May 15, 2012 2:17AM

Bears quarterback Jay Cutler understands why running back Matt Forte isn’t participating in offseason workouts. Forte is seeking a long-term deal instead of the one-year, $7.7 million franchise tender for 2012.

But Cutler expects Forte to rejoin the team by Week 1.

“Last time I saw him, he said he was lonely. I get it,” Cutler said. “Everyone was gone last year, with the lockout, and you do get that itch to get back in the office and see guys and work out. But Matt’s got to do what he’s got to do for him. Maybe they get a deal, maybe they don’t. But at the end of the day, we’ll have him the first game. I rest easy at night knowing that Matt is a true professional and he’s going to come in and he’s not going to miss a beat.”

Cutler was looking slim and happy Monday when he appeared at Perspectives Charter School on the South Side as MinuteClinic administered free diabetes screenings to hundreds of students in the auditorium.

Cutler, who was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after his second season in the NFL, runs a foundation that aims to inspire and treat underprivileged children and those with diabetes. “They already found one kid who is high risk for diabetes. So that makes it all worth it,” Cutler said.

Cutler said education is the “most powerful tool,” and he speaks candidly to students about the challenges of living with diabetes.

“Diabetes is something I don’t wish on anybody. But if you do get it, it doesn’t have to hold you back at all,” he said. “I’ve got a good grasp of it. But it’s a daily grind. There are good days and bad days. You want to limit your bad days as much as possible, but they happen.”

This is probably beating a "dead horse" but even Cutler believes that Matt Forte will play in 2012. Maybe he stays out of camp for a bit and to be honest we shouldn't be using him in the preseason anyway when we have Bell and Bush to work up to speed with. With a short preseason last year Forte came to camp in the best shape he's ever been in and I doubt he's just laying around waiting for something to happen this year either.

As much as I may dislike these negotiation tactics of his and his agents I do have the utmost respect for him as a football player. If Jay Cutler is satisfied Forte will be there and 100% ready to go once the season begins that's good enough for me.

It's nice to hear the human side of Cutler being covered as well. He's not the jerk everyone seems to think he is but he really isn't about tooting his own horn when it comes to this stuff so I'm glad to see Sean Jensen doing it for him. Jay spends and awful lot of offseason time doing charitable work for others.

No doubt the best people to help those suffering from a chronic illness are those who suffer from it themselves. There are good days and bad days and the art involved is just learning how to manage that since they'll never go away. Kudos to Jay for his time and efforts on behalf of these kids.

I don't think the team will have a problem w/Forte holding out as long as it doesn't hurt their winning of games. They all know it's a business; and I bet most players feel for the RB position more then other positions.
If anyone thinks there is a devaluation in the RB position, 3 were taken in the 1st round, and the RB was picked more then any other position for the 2012 top 100 player(according to what the show was saying).

Personally, I think Cutler is putting pressure on Forte to either sign the FT that was placed on him or sign the best contract the Bears are willing to offer him. Cutler is making Forte look like the villain even though he said that he doesn't blame Forte for conducting his business as he has. I think the hint was subtle but to the point, and I think he feels that Forte will do the right thing by signing with the team in one form or another.

Cutty grows into his leader role. He calls out the OLine to get better and perform better and he wants to win - with Forte.

I want him signed too, thats the best value we can have for our Roster next year. I would have taken a 1st at this years draft, but we didn't get it. Now, the best value is Forte on the field with a 1000+ yards season. We have Bush and Bell, we can live without him in the preseason and if he is worse because of the missed time. He will sign a contract soon or sign the FT

Nah, I don't read it that way at all Dags. He's giving Forte respect for his decision as far as his contract goes and at the same time expressing confidence in him that he'll be ready when the time comes because he knows he will. Cutler is way too plain spoken to be interested in hidden messages. He means just what he said.

You could be right. I read a lot into words sometimes and I'm not always right. It did come across to me initially that Cutler was be more than just simply duplicitous with his diction. We'll see when the time comes what he's like with regard to the potential for a hold out on Forte's part.

FWIW Wes Welker just signed his tag tender.

Patriots still have work to do with Welker

WR signs his franchise tender, but the club needs to reward the veteran with long-term deal. Matt Bowen

Wes Welker signed his franchise tender today and eliminated plenty of drama that would have surrounded the WR and the Patriots throughout the offseason. That’s the drill during contract talks in this league.
ICONThe Patriots still need to reward Welker for his production with a long-term deal.

Welker will now get $9.5 million to catch balls from Tom Brady this season. That’s good money—and its guaranteed.

And let’s be honest here: I would take that deal and so would you. The WR can start working out at the facility, go through OTAs, mini-camp, etc. That’s fine and it does reflect the professionalism of the veteran.

However, this is still on the Patriots to take care of their WR when we look at this from a player’s perspective. Guys in this league want to be rewarded for their production.

Translation: long-terms contracts with some security.

I wrote about this in the Chicago Tribune while discussing Matt Forte and his contract with the Bears. The veteran RB is still absent from Halas Hall and hasn’t signed his franchise tender. And we can’t forget about QB Drew Brees in New Orleans. The face of the franchise is waiting for the club to offer him that new money.

I don’t blame them. If you are a veteran player with proven production, get as much money as you can before the league tells you to get lost. The rest of your teammates will understand that this is a business and the offseason is the time to talk money.

Welker’s production is out there for everyone to see. And when you break down what the Patriots do offensively, he is a key part to their success as a franchise. Maybe he does have to play out the year on the franchise tender. Like I said above, that is good money.

But the way I see it, the Patriots need to get to work on a new contract, new guarantees and that “security” veteran players look for.

Welker has earned it. Its time for the Patriots to take care of their own.

I guess this is meant to suggest that Matt Forte is lacking in professionalism in his approach to dealing with his being FT, correct? I agree with the premise of the article that the team needs to take care of its own, but I also think that Forte needs to be more professional about the whole thing and just trust the Good Lord that things will work out. It's not as if he's hurting for money right now or anything.

I don't think so. Now when Bowen states that he understands a players reason for wanting long term security.

"I don’t blame them. If you are a veteran player with proven production, get as much money as you can before the league tells you to get lost. The rest of your teammates will understand that this is a business and the offseason is the time to talk money."

As for trusting if the Good Lord to provide I guess you've never heard the phrase; "In God we Trust, all others pay cash".
