Well, I for one agree with the article. I thought Lovie was a great hire and liked him for about three years. His management shortcomings have bothered me the last few years. I don;t think he brings anything to the party. The only positive I see with him is the players like him. That means a lot. But I think they could also get behind a coach that gets results (as opposed to his coaches getting results); Belichick, Harbaugh, Cowler are a few that come to mind.
My present opinion of Lovie is that he doesn't have a clue (kind of strong, but that's the direction I lean). I expect a HC to give the team its personality and then his coaches follow that direction. I'm still not sure what direction is Lovies direction. Martz came in and the offense took on his personality. It should have been Martz executing Lovies Offense. Even when Martz was told to do things a certain way, he went back again. Could this happen under any of the other coaches? Under Shanahan? Ditka? Coaches have different styles, but this is supposed to be his team under his leadership. I see no leadership. I see a guy with no direction that brings guys in to lead. All fine and good. Those guys need to lead - but they need to lead under him. Maybe they don't know where Lovie wants to go either.
Anyway, that's my deal with Lovie. He will succeed. He will succeed because Emery got him a boatload of talent and because Toub and Marinelli are top notch. Without Emery having come here, Lovie would have kept knocking at the door for many more years. He will succeed, but IMO, not becuase of his talents, but because of the people around him. He's riding the car - not driving it.

What'chu talkin' 'bout, houston? Lovie is a great coach and has done wonders with this team compared to his two predecessors. Lovie had to work with the shit that Jerry Angelo slung his way, and as a result, we haven't always won consistently under him. That's all about to change because of the talent that we have now. We've got the opportunity to be good for a very long time so long as we keep our defense from getting too old.

yeah, probably not a popular opinion. I just don't personally attribute much of what I anticipate to be our future success to Lovie as much as I do the people around him, Emery included. I think part of the HC's job is to get the GM to get the people you want. I don't think that Lovie had zero say in the previous picks. Plus, in terms of hiring assistants, Lovie has not had the best record. After many tries he finally has a pretty good staff with a few exceptions.
I think we are in the best position we have been in as far as I can remember. I think we both agree on that. I think we just disagree how much of that may be directly attributable to Lovies leadership.

Far be it from me to "defend" Lovie Smith, but...
Whom is actually running this show...?!? THIS (player aquisition) is supposed to be Emery's baby. We all know that the Bears needed a REAL WR and some O-Line. In my opinion the WR corp was in much worse condition. By sheer coincedence, the Bears brought in some WR's. And eventually, some O-line. We had some holes and the Bears actually filled one. I really would find it difficult to believe that Lovie is THAT unaware of what is happening around him. So to say that Jay sees what Lovie misses, might be a stretch. With that being said, I am not sure if this is a case of Lovie being ig'nant, or, giving the topic his special "Lovie Sugar Coating".
3nagurski, yes...me again...!!!

I agree w/many of these points. I have thought the same thing for a while here and there. It's hard to get a sense of leadership "style". It could be that his style is finding the best people and letting them do their job. Which is great but sounds more like a CEO than a HC. But the game is evolving so it's hard to tell how many in fact have the same style of leadership.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

Ditka was notorious for this, except for with the offense. On defense, it was all about Buddy Ryan and Vince Tobin running the show, and why try and mess with a good thing when you have the greatest defense the game has ever seen on the field?
On offense, though, you never heard about the offensive coordinator for the 1985 Bears. I don't remember his name, but I know more about the offensive line coach of those great teams than I do the offensive coordinator. Ditka called all the plays and played a hardcore, grind-it-out style of offense that fit his personality as a punch-in-the-mouth type of coach. Lovie tried taking over playing duties on defense in 2009, but he failed miserably at it, mainly because Urlacher was on IR all season.
