You're entitled to your opinion just like anyone else but some of us don't agree. I guess you've been seeing things we haven't.
If he catches punts in the middle of the field with big guys bearing down on him at full speed why would he have any fear of catching a pass over the middle? I don't doubt that he's dropped some throws all over the field but the idea that he gets jitters catching a pass but not fielding a punt doesn't jive brother. He could get laid out a lot harder on that punt from a guy hitting him square than he would from a tackle over the middle.
So dropping passes I buy, but because he has the "jitters" no.

Yea Hester can face down 11 kamikazes coming his way on a return but gets "jitters" in the middle of the field? lol
I don't even think its a fair statement to say that Hester "drops passes like crazy." Now he's made some notable drops at key situations in many games. I'll concede that. I do however believe that his drops have more to do with Hester trying to run before securing the ball. In most of the drops I've seen from Hester, he's had a lot of open field in front of him and just seems to have gotten a bit anxious. He's not the greatest WR out there but its just crazy to confine his speed and explosive ability to special teams. As has been pointed out many tiems over on this site...even if you don't throw the ball to Hester, someone has to account for him out there. He certainly belongs in some kind of WR package.

I don't think he get's the jitters. I just don't think he has very good hands, or is able to adjust on the ball very well. It's one of the reasons why I don't want him running deep routes; he has problems w/adjusting on the ball and the longer it's in the air the more time he has to F it up.
He needs to be 15-20 yds down the field on a slant where he's facing the ball coming into him.

Yeah and he'd make a shitty centerfielder too that's what I think. It's really simple geometry just like in baseball. You can't climb up and get it so you have to figure out where it's gonna come down at. Some can do that and others play 2nd base.

We also have to remember, unlike most wr's in the NFL this is what his 4th year playing this trade? Most have been doing it since HighSchool. It takes time to develop that feel and make it natural. He's still thinking through everything instead of just reacting.
The worse thing this team ever did was make him a starting WR before he was ready. Should have just let him go out there and be a backup and learn it as he went.

I don't really have an answer for Hester, other than politely reminding everyone that he really only has recent experience as a wide receiver.
It's his natural running ability that gets him an NFL paycheck.
Finding a justified place for him (other than KR/PR) on the roster is difficult, but he has to be somewhere. Once that decision was made, it's up to the team to coach him up on the skills needed to be in that spot.
Personally, the team being so vocally committed to Hester is a headscratcher. Yeah, he's got mad skills and his return abilities are now legendary, and yes, I'd accept selling of a roster spot if it means keeping him on the team, and yes, I wouldn't care if all he did was return (knowing full-well the opposing team will purposely NOT kick to him), but I would not go emo if he left the team.
All this 'Hester will get the ball" business is confusing. He's not Michael Jordan to The Bears. We know he's good and we want him to stay. Whose crying out for him to get the ball so much that crap statements like this even need to be made?

As Seth Rogan said in The 40 Year Old Virgin, people, particularly the coaches, are putting the pussy on the pedestal, and in this case, the pussy is Devin Hester. While I acknowledge that he's not that bad of a wide receiver and may well be capable of a 1,000 yards receiving if used properly, Hester has been misused so tragically in his career that it's really pathetic. He is the greatest kick returner to ever grace a football field, but despite that, he has to have a place on the roster to play outside of special teams because at $7 million, he had better be Superman and be faster than a speeding bullet every time he returns a kick if he's not going to play CB or WR.
Hester is a gifted athlete, and despite not having that much experience at playing wide receiver in his career, he has made some beautiful plays over the past five seasons. Most of the time, and I don't care what you say about this, Blue Horse-shoe, those big plays he's made have come out in the middle of the field where he catches the ball, turns, jukes, fakes some poor schmuck's jock strap off, and runs for extra yardage, if not touchdowns. Occasionally, if he gets wide open down the field, he's capable of catching the long pass, but as a rule, he is not good deep route receiver because of his tendency to occasionally drop passes or not be able to secure those passes and reel them in for big catches and thus huge chunks of yards are gained.

Well if nothing else when he's out there the other guys are gonna know that he's out there and they're gonna need to do something about it. No team likes to give up big scores and Devin Hester is Mr. Big Scores, Inc. Just the mention of playing him along with the "aircraft carriers" is already gonna make some DC's figure out what they'll do about that.
There are certain places in Denver I won't go after dark and it has nothing more to do with not even wanting to take the chance of running into trouble. Hester will make teams account for him when he's on the field and if they say that when he's out there they're damn well gonna throw to him that can't be ignored and if it's all just one big bluff but it works to free up the others well then it's a good plan.
If a guy you work with comes to work armed every day pretty soon you stop paying attention to him right. But if he never does then one day shows up packing a 9mm you will take notice and start making plans for what your gonna do or where you gonna hide if he starts using it. Maybe they're starting the "mind games" early this year.

Not only are they starting mind games this early, soul, I think that the Bears are intentionally trying to psyche out opposing teams by divvying out little bits of information from time to time. With what you refer to as the "aircraft carriers" in full motion and now having Hester to worry about at various times on the on the field offensively, opposing defenses are really going to be stretched thin. If you put a guy on Hester, what are you going to do with the Twin Towers and Bennett? If you cover the Twin Towers and Bennett up, what are you going to do about Hester? And if you somehow shut down the passing game by some miracle, there's that potent running attack that Tice says will be the bread and butter of this offense of his. This is actually going to be the first time in my relatively short time of following the Bears that I will be seeing them truly spread the field on offense, and I love it!

That kid... never stops to amaze me. I hope he'll stick around in Chicago for the rest of his NFL life. That speed... Those moves.. Those commentaters going crazy.. I love that guy, good call to make him play less so he is fresh on the ST, and yet still a threat as a WR.
