LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- The Chicago Bears announced the signing Wednesday of defensive tackle Nate Collins to a one-year contract.
Financial terms weren’t immediately disclosed.
A two-year veteran, Collins played in 13 games over the last two seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars after coming into the league as an undrafted free agent in 2010 with the New York Giants. A former standout at the University of Virginia, Collins posted 10 tackles and half a sack to go with a fumble recovery and one pass breakup.
Collins seemed to be a promising young player for Jacksonville, but the Jaguars rescinded an exclusive-rights free agent tender offer in March to the defensive tackle less than a month after a Virginia state trooper arrested and charged him with possession of marijuana.
Collins was set to appear in court on that charge on April 19.
With the signing of Collins, the club’s current roster now sits at the 90-man limit.
(Well if 50% of NFL players aren't using marijuana at least we know two Bears who are. I guess that doesn't seem to bother them a lot)
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I agree Tommie would be nice top have for sentimental reasons but that's a one year patch. If we can find a good young DT with some real promise out of this bunch and the UDFA's as well we'd be better off. We really liked this kid the year he came out of school and he's a perfect fit for a 3t UT as far as size and skills go. Be nice to see what he's got. Looks like the only reason Jax let him go was the mj bust and that was just simple possession.

I've noticed that this Bears' front office now under Emery isn't so strict on perceived "character flaws" as it was under Jerry Angelo. Angelo wouldn't have dared go after Brandon Marshall for both the reasons because he would cost too much as well as because he's had off-the-field legal issues. The same holds true with this Collins kid. I hope he pans out and does well with the Bears. He's a much needed addition to this defensive line now that we no longer have Okoye.
