As good as Jay Cutler is, he’s never better than when he’s comfortable.



That was the palpable difference Wednesday as Cutler was effortlessly slinging the ball around to wide receivers like he always does at the Bears’ offseason practice at Halas Hall.



In Cutler’s fourth season in Chicago, the Bears have finally put him in the nice, cushy comfort zone that brings out the best in him: He has his favorite receiver in 6-4 three-time Pro Bowler Brandon Marshall; another tall target in 6-3 rookie Alshon Jeffery; he has his former quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates; and an offensive coordinator in Mike Tice who will utilize an offensive line to protect the quarterback first and execute the play second.

Already it makes a difference. Just being able to get his point across without telling the offensive coordinator to bleep off seems to be a relief to Cutler.



‘‘I think Jeremy [Bates] has a really good feel of what I like to do and what I don’t like to do,’’ Cutler said after the Bears’ second OTA [organized team activity] workout. ‘‘There are plays out there today that I told him, ‘I don’t like them. Let’s think about getting rid of them.’ He’s fine with that.



‘‘It’s give-and-take. That’s a breath of fresh air around here — being able to give ideas and everyone giving ideas and let’s pick the best ones that work for everybody.’’

On this sunny spring day at Halas Hall, all things seem possible.


Why, this compound itself — surrounded by green forest, with gaily painted birdhouses dangling from nearby trees and little bunnies sometimes scooting across the gravel pathways (Oh, delight!) — is more arboretum than violence factory.
Ha, ha!


Right now quarterback Jay Cutler is running a skeleton passing drill featuring new wide receiver Brandon Marshall. This pairing — the veteran QB and his former Denver Broncos teammate, together again — can be seen on this vivid day as the reuniting of a cannon with its cannon ball. As Brian Wilson back with Mike Love. As Lil Wayne back with herb. The destruction the Bears’ 2012 offense will wreak on foes will be something to see.


Or so it seems.


It’s why Cutler and Marshall are mobbed by reporters the instant they step off the practice field at the end of this organized team activity.

Rick Telander is a fucking douche. It has nothing to do with his story... he just is. And he should stop trying to act like he is cool, hip or relevant. "Lil Wayne and herb ZOMG!!"

We'll see how "comfortable" Cutler is when the oline lines up against some of the better dlines in the NFL this year. On offense, our whole season comes down to the offensive line. I don't really buy much into this idea that play-calling alone will make the oline into a solid unit of protection for Cutler. Sure, it will help somewhat. But that alone won't overcome a crappy oline.

If the oline is solid. Cutler will be able to use all his new toys and we will be a great team. If the oline sucks, we'll suck on offense. Watch how patient Marshall will be if a crappy oline negates his game. Good luck with THAT one.

We will go as far as the oline carries us this year.

I think you should go and watch all the games during the 5 game win streak last year. They completely reigned in the Martz playbook during those 5 games and kept more guys in to block. It worked fantastic and they radically cut down the sacks. So yea play calling alone can make a line a more solid unit in pass protection. The Bears did it last year so it can be done.

Right now I'm looking at it this way. In an offense that features 3 and 5 step drops rather 7 and by keeping more people in to block when going downfield, and the fact that they have an entire spring and summer of workouts together to get used to on another I can't see them being any worse. There has just got to be some improvement in their pass blocking over last year.

Thanks mats. The biggest difference I see in Cutler and Marshall from their time here in Denver is that both have matured nicely and both are in the prime of their careers. Good to hear that "upstairs" as he calls it is listening to him not only in getting him his pass catcher's but in the composition of the playbook as well. He's gotta run the show on the field so why run stuff that's only 80% effective if you can run stuff that's 100% effective?

I agree. Hell anyone with any football acumen at all knows that it will make a difference, but not a huge difference. Martz's teams have always been heavily sacked, and there is no denying that. The 5 games that Big Papa refers to are real, but it's not like Martz went back to his craziness after those 5 games. He still tinkered occasionally, even DURING that 5 game stretch, but it's not all on him. If you have to max protect on ever damned passing play, then you're giving up too many other options that the opposition has to defend. You can beat the weak to mediocre teams that way, but you wont beat the ones you'll run into in the playoffs. We just need to hope our guys improve with a good off season schedule and another year of maturity. Dats what I'm shootin for, cuz dats all we got.
