I'd prefer the Bears wait on Cutler. I love Cutler and all...but I'd like to see what he actually does over the next 2 seasons before going bananas with a contract extension. I'd like to see a SB ring...

I'd prefer to lock down Cutler now while his asking price is less so we at least don't have to worry about the QB position in the future. I want him to win the Super Bowl, too, but he's already led us to the NFC Championship Game despite having one of the worst offensive lines in NFL history "protecting" him. He's proven that we can win most of our games so long as he's behind center.

Soul, my bad, your right that was the total. Still in the mode of talking contracts as guarnatees and not full(not real) money.
Dags, I think it was Soul pointed out that no one has more yards from scrimmage; or was it big plays, then Forte except Foster. The impact would be a lot more then negligable. You don't replace a player that can consistantly move you down the field like Forte can. RB's don't grow on trees, and they are not easily replaced with younger cheaper versions; that's what SD thought; how'd that work out for them? Det still looking for a compentent RB after Sanders left, it took the Bears years after Neal to replace him, Pitt has not replaced either the Buss or Parker.
I'm still in the belief they wanted the sweetheart deal and if nothing more the FT tag. I don't disagree that what Dag wants is what the Bears are looking at. Probably b/c of Cutler and his looming extension. I also don't know that it's the wrong move. It was just a dog move how they went about it last year.

I don't think Cutler is quite as materialistic as Matt Forte, or at least he hasn't shown himself to be thus far, but there again, we haven't seen what he's capable of being like when sitting down with his agent at the contract negotiating table with Phil Emery and Cliff Stein working out details as to what the Bears are willing to pay him and how they want to do it, and what Cutler wants to be paid in guarantees and salary. That being said, I think now is the right time to re-sign Cutler to a deal, because if we do win the Super Bowl in the next year or two and his contract comes up, he's going to want a hell of a lot more money than he will be worth now when he hasn't put up that many big seasons in his career. I fully expect that Cutler, because of all the weapons he has now with which to work, will put up 4,500 passing yards OR MORE every year...or at least he has the potential do so.

I gotta disagree. The last year of his contract is 2013 and you want him wrapped up long before then. We could wait until after this season and we may but whether he wins a SB or not we'd be complete idiots to ever let Cutler get to FA and go through with him what the Saints are going through with Brees. We need to sign him to an extension before the 2013 season begins.
Right now he's a $10 mil per year player and we should extend his deal before he does win a SB and wants $20 mil like Brees does. We're gonna need to pay him more but I don't think the Bears want to play him 100% more. Jay is just now coming into his prime and maturing into an offensive leader. I have no doubt he can win it all if we put the right team and the right effort around him.

I really hope Cutty signs an extension soon. I want to have security before he will price himself up next season. He sees that we do what he wants. No more Martz, bring in his buddy, his former coach and draft a big WR. Now Cutler, it's your turn to sign

I rather have Cutty sign another deal before he wins a SB and most likely demand more money. Also we might end up in a Forte situtation, I rather see a new deal now and in the last movement so to say. The sooner the better imo, we know he can led us to a SB, and we know he can win it.. or atleast we hope so!

Dag's to be fair, the year cutler was traded here he got a pretty nice extension. And at that time he was a .500 qb w/no playoffs. Forte is looking for his 1st extension and probably his last. There is a HUGE difference between their situations.

Most of all one plays the single most important position on the offense and the other a position with a short life span where players are replaced pretty frequently as soon as their productivity falls. We made Cutler a $10 mil a year guy with that last extension and with this one he'll most likely be closer to $15 mil.
The we have to ask what will Urlacher be looking for. I guess there might some disagreement about this but both those guys are more key to the Bears winning than Forte is. I think we could replace his rushing yardage but not his receiving and big play talents.
I gotta say this much is true. The Bears don't usually have problems extending their guys. Briggs is the only other player in recent memory that we had a problem with and he went out in FA and found he wasn't worth as much as he thought. I think a lot of teams felt he benefited from the system he plays in an that his production wouldn't be as great in another defense.
I'm not certain that's the case with Forte but before last year he wasn't flashing that kind of talent. He got a lot better IMO but alot of his impact and yards from scrimmage come from his receiving. That's bound to drop at least some now that we have a guys who routinely catches 70-80 balls a year. Those are plays that Forte won't be the target. No matter what he did last year he'll never be as much of a focal point again.

Not sure Urlacher can garner the contract he has before, he's still good, but you don't pay players for past performances and his age is going to start factoring in. I don't think he should be the sticking point.
Actually last year more of Forte's 20+ and 40+ yard plays came from his running. 16+ from rushing 6 from receiving. I think he's coming into his own as a rusher, ecspeically as that line becomes better.
Again if it's a money matter of signing Cutler over Forte, Tag forte for those years and let him walk. If it's just a matter of we don't think he's good enough, they'll regret not paying him.
