The same core that reached the NFC title game in 2010 and that was playoff bound last season before Cutler and Forte's injuries. He also built a very solid 05-06 team that was derailed because of QB futility. Maybe you are under the impression that every GM in the league gets their team to the SB? Biggest problem the Bears had during Angelo's reign was finding a star at the QB position. Its what held this team back for so many years. That's why the Bears had to "get off the bus running."

Well they didn't HAVE TO "getofff the bus running" if JA would have have did something else, HE HAD a choice with the picks he had. Yet still, who is the YOUNG core he left the BEARS with? 05, 06 SB losing team wasnt all JA's pickings. Hell the best players on the team JA didn't PICK in the draft*.
* MF, but didn't get resigned under his watch.

Look back on those drafts when the Bears were searching for a QB and you tell me who we could have gotten to run the show behind center? You're always going to have left overs from another GM when you take over. Angelo assembled a very good O-line in those 2 years. As far as "the core" that Angelo left...lift your fingers and hop on NFL.com and take notice of every player left from Angelo's draft. The '11 draft class in particular has the makings of a very special class just with the first 3 picks alone.

JA didnt draft the OL then, free agent pickups. Best players on the JA didnt pick ( or find replacements [ ok MF, didnt get resigned, DH, ok but was NEVER the WR he said he was]) 2011 Carimi, injuried in season, jury out ( i think good pick) Paea, injuried to start with, will see. Conte, question that. Enderle, does he even make the team this year? Thomas? who? ok?
2010
wright ok, maybe needs to stay on feild but ok. Wootton injuries a NO SHOW. J Moore ok GOOD nickel. LeFevour, GONE. And Webb, the BIGGEST question on the team

It doesn't matter if he built that line through free agency. Using free agency is just as vital as using the draft to build your franchise. And a good GM can court good players away from other teams. FA players are additions to a team.

Your saying JA was GOOD GM? Players go for the money. FYI, a GOOD GM builds thru the draft , not free agency. FA's yes important. But you keep the GREAT players you DRAFT with the money you save by drafting not free agents, which you have to pay more for. Including all the FA's that SUCKED and still got payed by JA. Need a list?

I'm saying Angelo was not a terrible GM as so many Bears fan like to say. For the simple fact that he is responsible for grabbing Cutler and Peppers, he's more than ok in my book.

A GOOD GM builds thru the draft, not paying FA's is what I'm saying. so much money for so many players. If FA's where the answer, why not just trade draft picks away for players and then PAY them? maybe the SC is invloved. ( HINT : Washington ).

Look around the NFL and see just how many teams have failed to BUILD THROUGH THE DRAFT. Very few teams these days are where they are simply because they've built their team through the draft. What is distinguishing teams from each other now is the ability to find a dominant QB and to fill in all the other pieces by whatever means necessary.

He's also the man that brought in Cutler and Forte and Hester. We're talking bonafide game changers. In fact, Angelo's first 3 picks in 2011 could be some real stars. He's left Emery with only a few holes to fill. Its just that most Bears fans have tunnel vision. Everything is offensive line, offensive, line, offensive line. Yet they conveniently overlook all the other areas where Angelo was very successful.
Angelo had too many misses. To many gambles (midgets, pool jumpers, fast guys who couldn't play football worth squat). Notice nobody has hired JA. So many of his misses were not even in the NFL after a few years. They were dumpster material to other teams (Air Currie did get a 1 year deal in Canada I guess).
Was he the worst GM? No. Did our overall talent level atrophy under JA's watch. Yes, it certainly wasn't what it needed to be for a Super Bowl win. Granted we haven't had a Lombardi Trophy in Chicago in over a quarter of a century -- and JA is certainly no Jim Finks, the architect of the '85 team.
Jerry was a mediocre GM who built a good but not great team. I'd like something better. Another Lombardi Trophy in Chicago would be nice. Maybe Emery has the right stuff to make that happen.
