    Free agency intrigues Brian Urlacher

Imagine Brian Urlacher wearing a uniform other than the customary Chicago Bears blue and orange.

While that's likely difficult to envision, Urlacher, who enters the final year of his contract understands the reality he could very well be playing for a different team in 2013, and despite his desire to remain with the club, the linebacker finds the prospect of free agency somewhat exciting.

"I think (team president) Ted Phillips said when they had the owners meeting they're gonna wait until the season is over; see what happens, how I play (before addressing the contract situation)," Urlacher said Friday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "It's kind of exciting. I've never been a free agent. So if I can get to free agency we'll see what happens. I no doubt want to finish my career here. There's no doubt about that. But you bring in free agency and all that you just never know what's gonna happen."

A 12-year veteran, Urlacher celebrated his 34th birthday on Friday. He enters his 13th season with the Bears and is in the last year of a five-year extension he signed in 2008. He is set to earn a base salary of $7.5 million in 2012 with a cap hit of $9.7 million.

Coming off a knee injury in the 2011 season finale, in which he sustained damage to the medial collateral and posterior collateral ligaments in his right knee, Urlacher has participated sparingly in the team's recent OTA workouts.

Urlacher expects to be fully healthy by the time the Bears start training camp in July.

Having topped the 100-tackle plateau for a franchise-record 11th time in 2011 with 135 stops, Urlacher continues to state his desire is to eventually retire a Bear.

"The Bears know I want to be here. I've told them that. I've said it publicly, and that's not gonna change," he said. "Whatever happens during the season or after the season, we'll address it then. But they know I want to be here, and I think they want me here."

The Bears' intention to wait until the conclusion of the 2012 season to address the contract might seem contradictory to that. Urlacher, however, doesn't see it that way.

Still, he's leery of the club's actions in the past, namely the situation last summer in which the team let center Olin Kreutz depart via free agency.

Prior to joining the New Orleans Saints, Kreutz had declined more lucrative offers from other teams in the past to remain with the Bears. But despite him making six Pro Bowls and starting in a team-high 134 consecutive games, the Bears made contract offers that Kreutz's representatives considered unreflective of his worth to the team.

"I understand the business side of where they're coming from. We have a lot of young good players here that need to get paid as well. So I understand how that goes," Urlacher said. "But like I said, at the same time I've never been a free agent. So you also bring that into play. (Longtime franchise fixture) Olin (Kreutz) got to free agency and it was a different offseason because we couldn't be in the facility. We couldn't talk. So it's a little different now than his situation. But we'll just see what happens."

He's the face of the franchise, and we have NO credible replacement for him, so no...he wont be going anywhere any time soon.

That's what my first thought was. Had we drafted Kuechly this year (I know he was off the board well before our pick) then I could see this being a possibility. But, I don't see anyone on the roster now that could take his place and I doubt they'd rely on a draft pick to take his spot next year. The only way I see this being remotely possible is if Urlacher wanted a ridiculous amount of money.

If McLellin was a MLB, then yeah...id be pretty worried, since he seems like an Urlacher clone. But, he's DL, so Lach's job is still his for the foreseeable future. Whatever contract they work out next offseason will most likely be his retiring contract, so id expect them to hunt down a replacement in the next few drafts

Exactly. No way we're going to trot a fuzz-faced kid out there fresh from the draft and have him replace the QB of our defense. The talent at LB after our "big 2" guys, is pretty mediocre. Roach wouldn't be starting on most teams in the NFL. The rest of the roster is nothing to get excited about.

They need to get serious about drafting Urlacher's eventual replacement. Do it next draft. Let him mature/learn while Urlacher is still here (at LEAST for one year). So. Better keep Urlacher and Briggs happy. I don't see Roach as "The Face of The Franchise" anytime soon.

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

Urlacher plays at an All Pro level so to me even if his play slips a little he's still the best game in town and far more so than Olin he's the face of the franchise. I think the "wait and see" is more related to how to structure a deal that's fair to him yet protects the Bears as well because of his age.

Ever since they re-did his deal in 2008 he's never come back and asked for more. He wants to finish up here and I think a three year deal would do it. That would take through age 36 and my guess is by that time he'll probably be ready to hang 'em up. If we do that Emery has some work to do soon. We'd lose Briggs, Urlacher and Pep all at the same time.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I guess we'll just have to see at what level he plays at this year. Obviously, if his play slips this year, you can't justify paying a guy $6 - $7 million a year in any new deal. I love you Urlacher but don't develop the big Forte head syndrome.

I really respect how he never came back for more money (like Briggs did).

Emery will take care of getting us a young LB stud next draft. Hopefully we can still get a stud at #32 pick in the 1st round.
