Chicago Bears Urlacher feels 2012 Bears loaded with talent

Star middle linebacker Brian Urlacher is convinced that the team he watched during OTA workouts this week at Halas Hall is the best the Bears have fielded since he arrived in 2000 as a first-round draft pick.

“Not even close,” Urlacher said Friday on ESPN 1000’s “Waddle and Silvy Show.” “The talent we have on this team is phenomenal.”

Urlacher pointed to a healthy Jay Cutler, the addition of three-time Pro Bowl receiver Brandon Marshall and a strong draft class led by top picks Shea McClellin, Alshon Jeffery and Brandon Hardin.

Urlacher has been particularly excited to see the 6-4, 230-pound Marshall on the practice field.

“His size, that’s impressive just right there,” Urlacher said. “He hovers above everybody. He’s physically impressive, but he works his butt off [too]. He’s out there catching balls every day from Jay, from all the quarterbacks. He’s using the JUGS machine, catching extra passes.

"And he’s a good guy. He’s been great since he’s been here. I think he fits in very well.”

Urlacher feels the same way about the Bears’ draft picks.

“The nice thing about this rookie class is they don’t say anything. They just go out there,” he said with a laugh.

“Alshon Jeffery had six unbelievable catches [Thursday] in practice and just jogged back to the huddle. We’re all going crazy because it was an awesome catch and he just jogs back to the huddle like
    it was meant to happen.”
    Urlacher: Talent on Bears 'phenomenal'

    Love it.

Urlacher saying that means something. That's pretty cool "best the Bears have fielded since he arrived in 2000 as a first-round draft pick."

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

On O there is no doubt. The only lacking piece that is less talented woulc be that OL we had back in 05-06. Other then that this O is loaded. I'm not sure about the D side though, The DL was pretty stacked back in the day, and our safeties/corners were far more domiant back in the day.

I don't doubt this is the best team we've fielded in a long while. Just the additions of Cutler and Marshall boost the offense way beyond what the skill level of the 2006 team was. I even think the Oline will surprise people this year. Some of these guys are just getting ready to break out and we should have Carimi back.

The defense is aging but still very capable. I think the main thing there is to keep those guys healthy. If we lose Urlacher, Briggs, Pep, Peanut or Melton we really have no one to replace them with that can play at their level. Gotta stay healthy and as they age that becomes more of a concern to me.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

This does not promote that warm and fuzzy feeling Soul. Injuries are part of the game, even if age was not a concern, (which it is) wouldn't you have to account for some missed games from what comes close to half of the starting line up on D? This is a serious issue. I really should study up on the depth chart and revisit this. I am sure most of you have better informed opinions on the team's depth, any thoughts?

It's all about some of the youngsters stepping up their play. Pep needs Wootton to put it all together and stay healthy so we have another RDE who can mount a good pass rush. The others we have aren't very impressive in that regard unless one of them develops and knack for it very quickly.

Signing Geno Hayes gives us a guy who could play either OLB spot and I wouldn't surprised at all if he beat Roach out for the SLB spot. Other than him all we have is a bunch of question marks. De Cicco may turn out to be decent MLB. He played well on ST's and he's getting a lot of time now and that will continue throughout the summer while Urlacher takes it easy. My biggest concern with him is that he's not all the big a guy. He's only about 230lb which makes him a damn light MLB.

The rest will fight it out for the last spot and the guy who plays ST the best will most likely get the job. We're thin on experienced depth at LB but we always are. Briggs is never nursing any serious injuries and Urlacher has had a couple of freak ones that have turned out badly. I still blame Major Wright for that happening. He didn't need to play the ball. Urlacher had it. It was right to him. Ah well water over the damn. Can't fix it now.

Emery needs to be looking at getting younger on defense over these next couple of years. We especially need another CB and LB's. So I guess we can add that to needs on the Oline if those guys don't step it up big time this year.

The Wootton article SF Bear shared on a recent thread on Corey being healthy and ready to go is a good sign. Also interesting to note, that this board seems pretty hard up on N. Roach. Sounds like Hayes, De Cicco, or someone seriously needs to send out a message this year. I'll have to dig up some clips etc. competition and the youngsters stepping up seems like it is more important on this team than most others.

We've already been sold on the O Line having the personnel, going to have to find out what's there. And if you want to make good use of your pass rush, start selling me on your D backs. Moore peanuts shouldn't be the only thing on the dinner menu.

I am sure something will change up in the next year or two, it will have to. I'm buying a 3 year extension for Urlacher, leaders are damn hard to replace. As I'm getting acclimated to this team, one of the things standing out so far is this void of younger prospects accross the board. I dunno, perhaps I just have the wrong impression thus far. The talent is here, but could the show end early this season?

I'm actually not so against Roach. He's obviously not Urlacher or Briggs but I don't hate on him, I think he does his job well enough. Can he be upgraded? Sure, but so can most players.

There is a lack of young depth, Angelo left our cupboards bare. I think the show could end early every season for every team, look at the Packers. They were rollin at 15-1 and were knocked off quickly. Barring major injuries I don't see any reason we couldn't have a long and successful season.

"As I'm getting acclimated to this team" whats that mean? Are you new to the Bears?

Roach is a mid level player playing next to two All Pros and I think we expect a lot out of him. I saw him make some nice plays last year but I think Hayes will give him a run for his money if he learns to play with enough discipline. Neither Roach or Hayes are at the level of the other two but they're guy you can play with and win with.

That's pretty much how I see Roach. Not a bad player at all. We're getting decent play from him. But at some point soon we need to be proactive about getting a top-tier LB to add to the mix. Soon, like in next draft. The Bears have had so many exceptional linebackers. I'd just like to see that continue.

But I hope my posts haven't been seen as hating on Roach. He's playing well with the talent he has. If you remove Urlacher/Briggs and look at what's left, I think it's ALL question marks or guys who are "good but not great" players. It's just something for Emery to work on next year. We've fixed all we can fix for this season I think. Emery has done a fine job.
