"Outstanding size, power, athleticism, raw talent to be excellent OT"

J'Marcus Webb Scouting Report from Scout Inc (Insider)

I'm not saying they know what they're talking about. But they sure seem to think Webb could be great. They have him rated near the top of our oline talent already - and with a ton of upside. I didn't realize that Webb is only 23 years old. Pretty young for a kid with 2 years NFL experience already.

    Go figure.

Webb has outstanding size with good power and deceptive athleticism. He is a steady-effort player but lacks great technique and is inconsistent with his pad level. He improved his hand use and ability to gain leverage early in the play as the 2010 season progressed. He has good power at the point of attack and is effective as a run blocker when he keeps his pads down. He is average downfield and engaging to stay connected in space. Webb can have some problems with speed and quickness on the edge in pass protection. He needs to improve his overall game to become a consistent lineman but has the size and raw talent to develop into an excellent offensive tackle.
This looks like an old scouting report though. I'll try to find a 2011/12 one.

Oh my God delete this immediately before Big Bad Papa Bear sees it or we'll be eating a bag of dicks.

I've never doubted his physical skills. It's what's not between his ears that causes him trouble. An awful lot of his mistakes are mental mistakes and getting outsmarted by pass rushers. Despite his physical tools if he's slow on the uptake they don't come into play when the should.

But that was a nice scouting report on him that Tice wrote wasn't it.

This is another old one from when we drafted him. It's interesting to note that some questioned his work ethic.

    Round 7: No. 218

    West Texas A&M OT J'Marcus Webb (6-8, 325)
About the selection: Incredibly decorated coming out of high school, the behemoth of a blocker was a Parade All-American, a SuperPrep All-American and also participated in the U.S. Army All-America Bowl. After signing his letter of intent with national powerhouse Texas, but ultimately playing just one season for the Longhorns, he finished his collegiate career at West Texas A&M following a one-year stop Navarro Junior College. His dedication and work ethic have been questioned more than once.

Interesting article my Mulin that I missed from about 10 days ago:

    JOHN "MOON" MULLIN

    Bio & archive

CSNChicago.com (at least this humble chronicler of gridiron games) has not bought into any of the hysteria reaction over the offensive line for about two years. The Mike Martz Factor has been analyzed in no small detail, so enough on that; Martz (and, critics would say J’Marcus Webb) didn’t block anybody last year. But the former was his own issue.

    Consider something else, though:

    The quarterbacks.

Some perspective here. The Indianapolis Colts allowed 16 sacks of Peyton Manning in 2010. They gave up 35 last season. Jeff Saturday, Ryan Diem and the Colts’ line twice as bad one year to the next? Don’t think so.

Matt Schaub had the Houston Texans rolling when he was injured in Week 10. He was being sacked 1.6 times per game. T.J. Yates did a nice relief job, but he also was sacked 15 times in basically five games' worth of playing time.

Figure it another way: Schaub was being sacked once every 19 pass plays. Yates was sacked once every 9.9 attempts.

Jay Cutler was sacked 2.3 times per game through his 10. Caleb Hanie and Josh McCown in six games went down 26 times, or 4.5 times per game. Did the offensive line just get twice as bad 10 weeks into the season? Probably not.

Jared Allen had the only sack of a Chicago quarterback (Cutler) by a Minnesota Viking in the teams’ first meeting last year. McCown was sacked seven times, three by Allen, in that final game.

If you want to declare the offensive line a disaster zone, then you’re saying that Hanie was maybe pretty good and just didn’t get any protection. You sure you want to go there?

The offensive line doesn’t need anyone running interference for it. That’s their job for Cutler and Matt Forte (presumably) and Michael Bush.

But there is a lot more to the offensive-line story for 2011, and now 2012, than J’Marcus Webb. A lot more.
    Go Bears!

The reason he left Texas and ended up at Bumfuck A&M is because he couldn't hack it academically. Great report. Now we can say he's stupid and lazy.

I think his comments are fair. I think it was pointed out that once Cutler began running that offense his way and using his mobility his sacks went down to about one per game.

When Hanie came in Martz went right back to his old stuff again and not only exposed Hanie to more sacks with 7 step drops but rather than simplify the offense he made it more complex and all that ended up with was Hanie getting more indecisive each week and holding the ball longer.

Even McCown who supposedly knew his offense and has mobility got crushed in the Minny game but that one I will hang on Webb. He was awful. Allen ate him alive.

I'm not anywhere near as stressed about it as some are. We actually gone to the NFCC Game with a line that was no better than this one and maybe not even as good. All I can say is that I can't see anyway for them to be worse or even remain the same. There should be some good improvement and if not well then all we've got is a bunch of losers and we rebuild but I don't believe that will happen.

Scouts Inc. knows what's up. We'll see how much he progresses this season.

He also said they came in barrels (not literally I don't think!)

I've never seen them in bags or barrels, so apparently PBPB and I don't shop at the same store.

Maybe the author meant ELUSIVE athleticism as in we haven't been able to find it. Or maybe it is deceptive. You see it but you can't recognize it!
