Good read: "Roach supportive of newcomer Hayes"

This is a great article. Roach must be a class-act to help a guy who potentially could take his job. I've been critical of Roach as a player (he's a decent player, just not an Urlacher/Briggs level guy.....and frankly very few, if any, players are). But I have to admit Roach is a classy team player to help Geno this way.

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Despite the dynamic of potentially taking Nick Roach's job, new Bears linebacker Geno Hayes said his competition has been supportive during his transition from Tampa Bay's defense.

"He understands this is a competition sport," Hayes said. "Guys come in every day, day in and day out. Since I've been here, he's been nothing but great; helping me out, (helping me) learn what I've got to learn, telling me the ins and outs of how to work out here, how to play, how to practice. He's been a guy that's supporting me, helping me out along the way and giving me what I need to know."

Signed in April to a one-year contract, Hayes spent his first four seasons with the Buccaneers. Hayes said Tampa's defensive system during his rookie season was similar to that of the Bears before the Bucs switched to what he called more of a "hybrid" scheme under former head coach Rahim Morris.

Hayes started 42 games for the Bucs, including 13 contests last season. He finished third on the team in tackles (86).

"For the most part, I know plenty of the stuff. (This is) pretty much like a refresher course from what I came in learning my first year," Hayes said. "Mostly what it is really is getting the terminology down, understanding how they want to play, how they want to practice, the tempo out here and pretty much understanding how they play around here to be a Chicago Bear."

Hayes said he's been practicing at both the strong and weakside linebacker spots with the Bears so far this offseason. By working with linebackers coach Bob Babich, the veteran thinks he'll pick up the team's system quickly.

"He's something I've been missing for the most part of my career, a coach that actually coaches on the finer details of how to play a system, play the game, and be a better athlete," Hayes said. "So far, he's trying to make sure that every little ounce of me is going to come out and make me one of the best players out here on the team."

I'll tell you one thing about the Bears...they really have a bunch of good hearted guys, unlike some other teams. These guys really are alla bout winning. While Roach isn't spectacular, I've always liked that he's been a solid player.

It's great to hear Roach is helping out as long as he's not giving him false stuff. Like; "No I know the playbook says the Slot guy on the crossing route, but it's a misprint." "You take the TE in the flat in this one"

Roach is used to the competition. He lost out to Pisa for a while when we brought him in and he'll still be a good team player if Hayes beat him out. He went to school at Nortwestern and home is Milwaukee so I'd bet he's glad to be playing in Chicago.

I think Roach is a player much like AP was. Maybe no the greatest of players but willing to do whatever it takes to help the team. Guys like him are good to have around.

I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I'm not a fan of Roach's on-field play at all, but at least he is a team player.

I agree completely. They do seem to have more team-oriented guys instead of a roster full of selfish "it's all about me" guys. I really like this year's team on several levels. This is one of them. Dedicated guys who are ready to challenge for a Super Bowl win.

    Gotta love it.
