Bears defensive end who also played outfield for the New York Yankees
Most of you probably already know this. But I'm still amazed at what Papa Bear George Halas accomplished. He was also the MVP of the Rose Bowl for Illinois in 1919. The guy was a great WR and DE (and made the "All Decade Team" as a player, while ALSO being the Head Coach and Owner.
One of his NFL records as a player stood for 49 years - he stripped Jim Thorpe of the ball, recovered the fumble & took it to the house 98 yards for a score.
The guy was amazing as a player, coach & owner - and he did all 3 jobs at the same time. Pretty cool.
If any of you have not read the book "Papa Bear" by Jeff Davis I'd highly recommend reading it. Papa Bear has no equal in professional sports to this day. I have a lot of respect for his daughter too. Virginia (Halas) McCaskey was always going to the games with her dad, and you STILL see her at the games at 89 years of age. I've seen pics of her at away games sitting outside cheering the Bears while snow falls. Her dad would sure be proud of her.
Here's a link to the book if anyone want to read it:
