I remember as a kid (7) watching Dick Butkus running to the aid of a Lions WR that collapsed after a play and screaming to the Lions sideline for help. Chuck Hughes suffered a massive heart attack and died on the field that day. While it was not the result of a hit, I'll never forget it. Last year, I actually thought for a moment that I had witnessed it again with the Johnny Knox injury. That was not a dirty hit either, and was by all accounts, a fluke. But I never want to see another guy die on the field again. We are heading that direction, and at times, I feel a bit guilty for my love of this gladiator sport, but I do love it so.
I don't have the answers on how to protect them more and these guys know the risks just as smokers know the risk when they light up; but this game is not worth a human life. While it DOES take away from the game that I grew up watching and playing, the rational side of me has no problem with whatever measures need to be taken to protect the players, and ultimately, the game itself.
So how many players have died on the field over the past 15 years as players have gotten bigger and faster and more powerful? How many players are even seriously injured from hits, concussions aside? Its a violent sport. There is only so much that can be done with equipment. These guys know the risks with playing football. You want to play professionally and make the big money, then you need to prepare for the negative impact on your health. They know all these things upfront. Now lawyers get involved and everyone plays dumb about the dangers of playing football. Its pretty absurd.

BBPB, the problem is that the players are getting reckless and using that equipment as weapons, so now you have to change that equipment, and reteach the basic technique, head has to be up when you tackle; you tackle w/the head up and it reduces the impact and those helmet and helmet hits(now illegal).
There really is no reason to headhunt, or to purposefully try and take players out of the game now that we know the huge impacts these injuries can have. Tackling and removing from the field are 2 different things; agian go watch how those women in the lingerie football league hit and tackled eachother; w/litterally half the protection, but not near the serious injuries. It was plenty violent; but not near as dangerous.

The days of Chuck Cecil and Ronnie Lott were far more dangerous than today's days.

Guys are bigger stronger faster, and more wreckless then the 80's and 90's.

I agree they are much bigger, faster and stronger but where are the injuries resulting from hits??? Most guys that are suffering leg injuries are having them happen because of that fake turf and how they are planting their feet. Its not a result of hits. We don't see guys getting paralyzed or killed every year. I think the "concussion lawsuits" are creating a perception that some how players are getting banged up badly every where and I don't think its any different today than it was 2-3 decades ago. In fact, I believe players are much safer to do with all the rules changes and better equipment.

Proper tackeling is key to FIXING this. BUT on some of the hits flaged last year , the defender is in his right to hit as he is, but the offenseive player tuckes just before he's hit and lowers his head. Which gets the defender flaged. Yes, some are HEAD SHOTS, but most fall to what I said.
Amd to the run out of bounds.... WWWD? (What Would Walter Do ) LOL he hit the defender, not run out of bounds. MAYBE instead of being hit they should hit the defender back? I don't know. Just proper tackeling would sure help everyone.
