Marshall vows to mentor fellow Bears receivers

When the Bears traded for receiver Brandon Marshall, they got more than just a big, dynamic playmaker. They also acquired a veteran who intends to mentor his young teammates.
“I guess it’s in me in a way,” said Marshall, who was acquired in a March 13 deal with the Dolphins. “It took seven years to harness it and put it in a positive direction, and I’m excited about it.
“This is the first year that I actually felt pressure as far as, ‘I’ve got to work because there are some young guys and I’m getting older,’ but also I’m recognizing how important it is to bring those guys along. This is a first for me, but I’m embracing the opportunity.”
Marshall is one of only three NFL receivers to compile at least 1,000 yards in each of the last five seasons. As Jay Cutler’s primary target with the Broncos, the 6-4, 230-pounder caught 102 passes for 1,325 yards and seven touchdowns in 2007 and had 104 receptions for 1,265 yards and 6 TDs in 2008.
Asked what he can teach his fellow Bears receivers, Marshall said: “Everything. It’s not just on the field, it’s off the field because if off the field isn’t right then nine times out of 10 it’s going to be real hard to perform on the field.
“As far as on the field goes, we have some great teaching tape from my days in Denver. We’re installing some of that stuff here. We get a chance to watch some of that 2007-08 tape and there are a lot of mental mistakes and a lot of situations where we missed holes just in route technique and how to work.
“So we’re excited about the opportunity. We have a great group and I think we’re going to do something special.”
Devin Hester is among the Bears receivers eager to learn from Marshall.
“He brings a little more excitement to the receiver corps from a veteran guy that plays his tail off his whole career in the NFL and became a true No. 1 wide receiver—a 1,000-yard season every year,” said Hester.
“With the mentality that he has it helps us out a lot to see what it takes to be a true No. 1 receiver. I just try to be his little shadow right now. Whatever he’s doing I’m trying to do because I want to get to his level.”
