Brian Davis: "Where Does Chicago Bears' Michael Bush Fit?"

Interesting read, but I don't agree with all of it. I see no problem with the RUN blocking of this offensive line. None. It's still up in the air regarding PASS PROTECTION. Also, Forte will play this year. No way he walks away from $7 million dollars just "to make a point" with the Bears front office. He'll play.

Where Does Chicago Bears' Michael Bush Fit? Fan's Opinion

By Brian Davis | Yahoo! Contributor Network – 3 hours ago

When the Chicago Bears signed Michael Bush for "only" $14 million over four years, I was ecstatic. Not only did I think the Bears got a great player, they got him at a bargain-bin price --as far as significant contributors go in the National Football League anyway. However, what Bush's exact role will ultimately end up being is still open for speculation.

    Standard Short-Yardage Back
Generally speaking, this is the role Bush was brought in for. Not only is he a monster in these scenarios, Matt Forte is pretty terrible. Bush will be the man for those pesky 3rd-and-1 and 4th-and-inches scenarios that have plagued the Bears for a while. Matt Forte is a tremendous running back, but, for whatever reason, he has not been able to produce the same way in short yardage. With Bush, you might as well be lining up a gas-guzzling Hummer.

    Complementary Running Back
In this scenario, Bush would be splitting carries with Matt Forte. The only way I could see this coming to fruition is if Bush begins to perform exceptionally well in his limited carries --which he might. Bush doesn't fumble much (averaging about one per season), and he racked up 977 yards and seven touchdowns last season on 256 attempts (good for 3.8 yards per carry). I'll admit Bush is a back that is more effective the less you use him, but combined with the best receiving the corps the Bears have had (ever?), it could be open season for the running backs. He has also been impressing on the receiving end in the Bears' OTAs.

    Star Running Back
Matt Forte's contract talks fall through, Forte doesn't play, and all of a sudden Michael Bush is the starting running back for the Chicago Bears. There was a time when I would have thought this a crazy prospect, but as the days and weeks go by with an unhappy Forte, I'm beginning to accept it a little more. I'm not saying I don't think Forte will ultimately sign, but I'm getting my mind used to the concept in case he doesn't. I think Bush would do well, not as well as Forte, but well.
With the question marks surrounding the Bears' offensive line, we don't know the the level of success the backs will achieve. All I know is that Matt Forte has had some pretty strong seasons with a pretty lousy offensive line. If this line is even passable, watch out.

Hey I'm with you my friend. A line that blocks for over 2000yds on the ground, knows how to make holes. This line is very strong in this area. Something that they get little recognition for, by most Bears fans I might add.

I expect Bush to really help us in short yardage or goal line situations. He can do much more than that, but it's an area of need for us right now.

The run blocking is actually pretty good. It can improve between the tackles though and that's where his place will be.

I think as far as run blocking goes they were a lot more than passable last year and that was without Carimi for almost the entire year and CWill for half of it. What they need to at least get passable at is pass blocking although I do believe that Martz did them no favors running the offense he did. J'Marcus Webb is no Orlando Pace.

Bush should be the perfect compliment to go along with Forte. He excels at things that Forte is poor at and he's a good enough all around back to take 10-12 carries a game or some passes. I'm glad at least one sportswriter pointed out that weakness in Forte game and he's right. He's not just not very good at he's terrible and that one of the reasons Bush is a much better scorer. He can punch it inside the five whereas Forte can't.

I've been saying all along that Bush could help Forte extend his career for a couple more years than he might not have otherwise. When you look at the talent and the depth we have on offense now and compare that to where we were a year ago the difference is amazing.

Great point. Forte should take the long-term Bears offer & enjoy being a part of an offense where they're not wearing him out making him carry too much of the offense. We should have a great passing game moving forward, and with Bush sharing carries, Forte's high mileage body could last a heck of a lot longer. I wonder if he ever considers this?

It's hard to figure out what he considers about anything except his perceived market value. He complained last years about being "used up" or worn out yet when Emery signed Bush to carry some of the load has first reaction was to whine about it. He can't have it both ways.

I'm beginning to think he needs to dust that agent of his, sign the contract the Bears have offered and save himself the 3%. Bakari isn't doing him any good at all except to keep him from accepting the Bears offer. I like what Osi Umenyiora did with his agent. The guy advised him not to accept NY's offer because it was "substandard".

So Osi fired the agent and took the deal. He finally accepted the fact that there were other players to pay besides himself and that what they offered was probably the best he could expect from them given the circumstances. Sometimes you just can't expect top dollar from your team. Everyone's salary scale is different and fitting top players into it is always a challenge and sometimes you have to do what's right for team as well as yourself.

Like I said there's a finite amount of cap dollars each team can spend and everyone needs to fit under that. Would Matt have preferred that we not have signed Bush, gave in to his demands and then ran him to death for two more years and shortened his career?

Yeah, I agree with all of that. Forte needs to look at the bigger picture. He's got a very sweet situation here if he doesn't get greedy. He's going to be filthy rich, play on a team that is now set up for a Super Bowl run, and (finally) he can be used more moderately each season, extending his playing career. And let's face it, Bears players who spend most of their careers in Chicago - are treated like kings forever here. No other city reveres it's star NFL players like Chicago does.

Sure, he could ride out a franchise tag year and probably go to a crap team who will squeeze out the last of his NFL career riding him into the dirt & wearing his body out. He's going to be filthy rich as a Bear, so how much MORE money will make him a happy human being?

He really has a great situation as a Bear, if he can think "bigger picture" here.

He's all the first 3, and if Forte were to get injured the 4th. Forte is going to play, he's not missing games or time. To think so is foolish. Forte will sign the tag or a long term deal he finds acceptable, play 1-16 games(barring inj) and then either go into FA(Bears aren't going to FT him again) or be a Bear for another 3-4 years(b/c he signed).

I'd agree. I think that's a fair read on it. Maybe the greatest advantage is the areas where he compliments Forte the most. Mainly the power running plays. Bush doesn't have Forte's moves or open field running ability but he still has enough speed to get outside and to catch passes as well.

I think they'll use him a lot like they used Barber last year. He'll take the short yardage carries but also play a series or two throughout the game just to give Forte a break. I think together they'll make a great tandem. I just don't want to see any of the jealousy bullshit we had between TJ and Benson though.
