And We Think the Officiating is Bad Now?.................

Officials paint a different picture of negotiations with NFL

Say NFL 'never intended to work toward a fair agreement' Brad Biggs

The NFL announced it would begin the process of hiring replacement officials today. The officials say the league “never intended to work toward a fair agreement.”

While the league said earlier today it “made a proposal that includes substantial increases in compensation for all game officials,” the officials are painting a much different picture, saying the NFL terminated negotiations after only two sessions with the federal mediator.

“We learned that they sent out letters to potential replacements on Saturday and Sunday before we even finished our negotiating session with the Federal Mediator,” said Mike Arnold, the NFLRA lead negotiator, in a statement. “Additionally, the NFL’s negotiators took fewer than five minutes to review the NFLRA’s offer, which requested increases smaller than those the League agreed to in 2006, before walking away from the bargaining table.

“It is now clear the League never intended to work toward a fair agreement, even through mediation.”

Per Arnold, no additional negotiating sessions are planned right now.

“However, our organization’s professional referees will continue preparing for the 2012 NFL season to the best of their abilities, despite the NFL’s refusal to provide them with vital training and educational materials,” Arnold said. “It is unfortunate that as referees’ responsibilities are expanded that the NFL would jeopardize player health and safety and the integrity of the game by seeking amateur, under qualified referees to administer professional games.”

Does the NFL ever go through contract negotiations without labor strife. This year it's the refs turn.

The NFL has the best ref's in professional sports IMHO. Obviously, they make mistakes, but overall they do one heck of a job in a sport that has 22 blindingly fast moving parts on every play. The NFL is comprised of 32 franchises, that for the most part, are BILLION dollar entities. Wouldn't you think they'd treat the refs a bit better here?

    Refs should go on strike.

Any "replacements" would be making alot of poor calls. Watch any NFL game, they always mention how many YEARS and playoff games particular refs have had, you cant easily replace experience like that. Besides, watch how pissed off the players get with replacement refs who blow calls.

The owners really don't value the refs enough to pay them. I don't think they'll have any problem with bringing in clueless scab refs. It stinks, but that's how the owners are.

Sheeeit it ain't rocket science. I used to ref and ur responsible for your section of the field and it wasn't hard to do. Sides NFL Network said they're looking to use former NFL refs and refs from the major college conferences - ALL guys with ample experience ...... so I doubt the difference would be noticeable. And these arguments coming from the refs negotiater sound contrived and weak. This doesn't bother me at all . They already get airfare, hotel rooms, stipends and good pay for 3hrs work. Meh.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

I thought for a long time that the NFL had it far too easy as far as their officials go. It's a part time job with partime pay. Baseball doesn't have that, basketball and hockey don't have that. The NFL gets by as cheaply as they can as far as officiating goes.

There should be at least three full time officials out of ten on each crew. Probably the Referee, Head Linesman and the umpire. These are the guys closest to the line of scrimmage and the offensive and defensive backfields. These three should be most accountable for rules interpretations and maintaining conduct on the field.

There is no way the NFL can claim they don't make enough money to afford a total of 48 officials on their payroll. It's ridiculous that the most popular and most lucrative sport in America doesn't have any full time officials. Not even one per game!

Its ridiculous what NFL refs get paid for a few hours of work and the kind of compensation they get. Grossly overpaid. But I get where they are coming from. They see the kind of money the NFL is pulling in. Shoot Roger Goodell reportedly will make $20 million per season by the end of his current contract. So the NFL has serious money for everybody.

Sure there's plenty of money ( we all know they're just being dicks ) - but to try to equate a 16 game season ( maybe 24 if u include pre-season and playoffs ) to those other sports with 82/ 162 game seasons doesn't quite work when comparing the reason the other sports have 'full time' refs and the NFL doesn't. It IS part-time ..... so they're gonna try and pay em like it. I don't blame the refs for trying to get more money - but they're over-reaching here and they're gonna get burned.

The season last from August until early January. About five months total and at that point the part timers are released until the following August. But the other three you keep employed going over games tapes and key calls to see how they were handled. Those issues could be addressed with the rest of their crews before the beginning of the following season.

Give them representation on the rules committee as well. We'd probably end up with clearer easier to officiate rules with less ambiguity to them. I don't advocate keeping them all as full time guys but at least two from each crew should be. I'm sure there are ways to keep them productive in the offseason.
