Well you can imagine how well that went over and as much as anything that was the beginning of people describing him as arrogant and conceited.

But the funny thing is he went out right away and proved that he had at least as good an arm as Elway and it was more accurate. There's very few guys ever who could fit a throw into some of the windows he finds. The problem sometimes is that when he misses by just a little bit he can get picked. I think he learned to be a little more selective about that last year.

But now that he's got the "aircraft carriers" with big reaches and great hands he should do even better at just putting it out there. The passing game went from very mediocre to top flight in one year.
You know I remember when that all blew up in Cutler's face and they were ripping him for those comments, but I'll tell you...when I first saw him play, I was like wow those writers owe him an apology. He has an incredible arm. The Jets wanted Cutler bad. The press went nuts here when the Jets couldn't make a deal.

You know I was following the trade rumors all the way from when they said they weren't gonna trade him right up to the few days before it happened. I didn't know that Jets were that hot for him but the rumors out here was that Washington was gonna get him. Snyder had picks to trade, the money to pay him, and a QB to send in return. Plus they were hiring Shanny or already had so it just seemed like a done deal.

I met some friends of mine for coffee the morning after the trade. We'd been talking about it for weeks kind of betting on what would happen and the consensus was Washington. So when I walked in they were all sitting around the table with the morning paper. Just as I was sitting down one of them said well they traded Cutler yesterday. So I said that figured, where. He said the Bears and I said "no fuckin' way" and I didn't believe them until they showed me the headlines in the paper. I couldn't believe Angelo would pull the trigger on a trade like that.

We were pretty lucky we got him. From what I was hearing Washington offered more picks but McDaniel wanted Orton more than he wanted the extra picks so that's why they went with the Bears offer. I guess you could say the drafting Orton was a good move. Usually it's the Packers who draft a QB in the middle rounds and parlay that guy into a higher draft choice down the road. This time we parlayed one of ours into a franchise QB. That was a lucky break.

That first year after the trade when Orton was tearing it up and Cutler was struggling a bit all these guys out here were telling me how they put one over on the Bears and that Orton would prove to be the better QB. I said just wait. As soon as the AFC teams figure out his limitations and that he can't throw deep accurately the jig will be up. I told them you'll win some games with him but he'll never take you to a SB whereas Cutler could. They all laughed then but who's laughing now, LOL.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I remember all the goofing that Cutler was being subjected to when he first came to CHI. I knew it was going to be rough initially because he really didn't have much to work with and man was the pressure on him to be Chicago's savior. Its incredible though how things have changed since then and how Bears fans have embraced him. Soul I honestly thought Cutler was going to go bananas during an interview when he first got to CHI because those hometown fans used to boo the crap out of him when he went through that awful stretch of throwing all those picks. The best Bears QB I've seen in my lifetime was Erik Kramer and Jim Miller was pretty damn good when healthy. Cutler however is leaps and bounds better than them.

I liked Kramer but just like Miller he couldn't stay healthy. That was a bad break because he was pretty young and would have had a lot of years left. That cheap shot that took Miller down in the playoff game was shitty. They weren't protecting QB's then like they are now but that one really pissed me off.
