"3 Chicago Bears Who Could Shock the World in 2012"

I had to read this due to the title
He commented on Hardin, Tice & Cutler. I didn't include the Cutler comments here. Just follow the link to the article to get the Cutler piece.

    By Ross Read

    Safety Brandon Hardin

Anybody who has followed the Bears over the last couple of years knows the safety position has been an issue. Since Mike Brown's departure, the back end of the secondary has been a revolving door. The Bears finally have a cornerstone to build on.

Brandon Hardin is a dynamic athlete and will be a star for the Bears. During OTAs he has lined up at the free safety position, but given his 6'3", 217 lb frame, he will frequently line up as a strong safety in the box. What scared most people was the shoulder injury that caused him to miss all of last year. Hardin is healthy now and more than ready to take control.

The former corner has the coverage skills needed to keep up with receivers and tight ends. What makes him so dynamic is his ability to lay the wood on anybody who comes within a five-foot radius of him. In Lovie Smith's defense, he will have free rein to make on-the-ball big plays and cause many turnovers.

His past injuries should not put a weak label on him. Instead, it shows his toughness and commitment to the game. He worked hard to come back from his shoulder injury, and in 2008 he played with a broken hand while dealing with a sprained wrist on his other hand.

Hardin should be an all-rookie member next season, and could have a career similar to former Dallas Cowboy standout Darren Woodson.

    ..................

    Offensive Coordinator Mike Tice

Let's hop in a time machine. Take it back to a year that seems so long ago. Take it back to 2003 where Mike Tice was the head coach of the Minnesota Vikings. During his time as the head man there, Tice was heavily involved in a highly productive offense.

Over the last 10 years, the Bears have scored over 400 points in a season once. It was the year they went to the Super Bowl. Sadly, you have to go back to 1997 to see when else they did it. During his four full years as head coach, Tice's offenses did it twice and put up 390 points in another season. Tice may not look like an offensive mind, but he is.

Tice did not call the plays back then, but he was an intricate part of the offense. Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan was calling the plays for three years during Tice's tenure, but it was molded out of what Tice envisioned for his team.
Expect Tice to take his shots down field using the strong arm of Jay Cutler and size of Brandon Marshall and Alshon Jeffery. It could look a lot like Daunte Culpepper and Randy Moss when they were at their peak.

The Bears only attempted seven passes over 40 yards last season. Compare that to an average of 20.5 a season during Tice's head coaching tenure. Yes, he loves the zone blocking run scheme but he also enjoys the big plays that come with taking shots down the field. Last season, the Bears averaged 7.07 yards per pass attempt while Tice's Vikings averaged 7.63.

People are prematurely typecasting Tice into a ball control coordinator. He will be the kind of signal-caller who loves to throw on first down, use play-action passes and take shots down the field. Tice will not only keep teams on their heels during the season, but he just might shock the world with his offense.

It seems everywhere you turn you're reading some article on sky-high expectations for Mike Tice. He's going to finally solve all of our oline woes, be the best OC play-caller we've ever had, solve world hunger & cure cancer (those last two may be easier than the first two).

I wonder if expectations have gotten too high for anyone to live up to? I can see the tar and pitchforks coming out like in an old Frankenstein movie if we don't get to the Promised Land this season. Maybe even by our bye week if things REALLY go south fast.

Me too. Looking back, I feel like we had two well-meaning, but crazy people "flying the plane" when Jerry Angelo & Mike Martz were here. Jerry probably drafted from the "voices in his head" telling him a pool-jumper would be the next "star" for the Bears (and drafting lots of midget players was the fastest way to win a Super Bowl). Martz was calling 7 step drops when our oline was 5 turnstiles. JA & Martz were flying the plane in a nosedive - and us fans were just helpless passengers crapping our pants in fear every game.

Lovie was just napping in the back row. Happy as a clam, dreaming of his next chance to throw the pretty red flag again

why the hell did it take so long...

I think it took so long because JA was a "good but not great" GM who would have an "OK" team most years, and every so often we'd have a solid year. The Bears organization and fans accepted mediocrity as being "OK".....we'd point to something good JA had done, and ignore countless stupid moves he had made.

I'm sick of good. I want "great" and "great" is measured in Super Bowl WINS and nothing less. If you accept mediocrity as being "OK" then guess what? You will be a mediocre team that has not won a Super Bowl in over 25 years - a quarter century. It is outrageous that a once great franchise like the Chicago Bears have only 1 Super Bowl win. Ever. Just one dusty old Lombardi from 1985.

shouldnt Paea be more of a pick in this category with lack of depth on dline he will get more chances to showcase his talent? I guess with our musical chairs at S could be the case for Hardin but I just see Paea being a beast this season

Paea has a huge upside if he can keep his technique squared up. Despite his strength he still needed to learn to keep his pad level down of even guys without his strength could gain leverage on him. He's short enough that if he can learn to come of the ball hard and low he'll shoot gaps and make a lot of plays in the backfield. I'm looking forward to seeing what two fast strong DT who can both penetrate can do playing next to one another. You can't double team both of them and contend with Pep and maybe even McClellin on the outside. This is a huge line but they're very quick.

Funny you should come up with that. I had that in the back of my mind when they drafted him. Here's a guy with Urlacher kind of speed. Urlacher kind of height and toughness and all he lacks is the bulk of a MLB. I don't know if the kid could play at 240-245lbs and still retain all of his speed and range but it may be interesting to see how he develops.
