Melton could play Fridge role in Bears' offense
Melton could play Fridge role in Bears' offense

The Chicago Bears have been known to deploy a defensive tackle at fullback in short-yardage or goal-line situations, and it could happen again this year.
In the mid-1980s, 6-foot-2, 335-pound William “Refrigerator” Perry made national headlines when he got the call on occasion to plow into the end zone or even catch a TD pass. This year, the Bears might call on 6-foot-3, 295-pound defensive tackle Henry Melton to score from in close.
“I have some experience playing running back. (They’re) trying to bring me back, play some fullback a little bit,” Melton said after the Bears' OTA session Wednesday at Halas Hall.
Melton did more than dabble in the backfield in high school. As a senior at Grapevine High School in Texas, Melton rushed for over 800 yards and eight touchdowns. He also scored 12 touchdowns rushing as a junior while averaging 6.2 yards a carry.
At Texas, Melton was a backup running back for two years and carried 132 times for 625 yards (4.7-yard average) and 16 touchdowns.
“I played a little bit,” Melton said modestly. “Trying to bring it back, see what I’ve got left. It’s fun. I’m trying to perfect my craft at defensive tackle. But it’s a fun switch-up. Any way I can help.
“We’ll see how it goes. I’ve got to go the right way first. We’ll get a hold of that. Hopefully you might see me a little bit on offense ... you might see me out there a little bit.”

Before they give him the ball they better give Clutts at least an opportunity to have even ONE rushing attempt.

High-risk and high-reward. He scores a few times and Tice is a genius. Meltoin gets hurt and affects the play of the thin DL, he is an idiot. Not sure this one is worth the risk given Clutts and Bush.

Why? We have Clutts and Bush for the role of "frig". And Melton is not near the size of the fridge, it's not even close to the same.

I'm with you. Melton could develop into a premier DT this year. Enough with the gimmick plays already. We don't need some stupid injury happening because of something like this.

Clutts looks like an absolute stud for these situations. This Melton move tells me they're probably going in a different direction with Clutts. They have the new TE who can play H back too. It's a tough go in the NFL now for pure fullbacks. It sucks for Clutts though. He definitely looks talented.

Its just a matter of time before we hear over 50,000 shouting in unison, "CLUUUUUUUUUUTTS." Better than that "COOOOOOOOOON." Excuse me, "KUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUHN."

Just another move to show Forte management means bidness.
"We'll plug anyone in at RB and show you."

Don't think that's the idea or point, but okay...I think it says more about what they think about Bush and Clutts then it does Forte. Melton will be taking their touches away not his.
