Time for Davis to put up some numbers
Time for Davis to put up some numbers
Bears tight end believes he can double production in new offense

For once in his life, Jerry Jones didn't get what he wanted.
The flashy Cowboys owner looked Kellen Davis in the eyes in March and expressed a genuine interest in bringing the tight end to "Jerry's World.''
At that particular moment, the feeling was mutual.
"I met with Jerry for a long time,'' Davis recalled. "Jerry's a funny dude. Yeah, they put on the full-court press. They wanted me there and all that. But that's in the past.''
Davis could be a large part of the Bears' future.
His arrival in Dallas two hours after free agency started spoke volumes about the Cowboys' interest in him. A contract offer was extended, although the financial details remained undisclosed.
Davis, however, was back in Chicago the next day to sign a two-year, $6 million deal to remain with the Bears.
"I came back because (the Bears) came through with the offer,'' he said.
Now the Bears need Davis to come through with a productive season.
Coach Lovie Smith and quarterback Jay Cutler have expressed much faith in the 6-foot-7, 267-pounder despite his pedestrian-like numbers through four seasons. The former fifth-round pick has 28 career catches for 300 yards and nine touchdowns. Last season, Davis started 15 games and caught 18 passes for 206 yards and five scores.
Davis' growth may have been stunted in former offensive coordinator Mike Martz's complex, tight end-unfriendly scheme. Now, Davis could flourish with ex-NFL tight end Mike Tice running the offense and new quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates implementing was has been deemed a pass-happy attack.
"It's tailored more toward what (Cutler) likes to do,'' Davis said. "Obviously, that makes him more comfortable. And the routes are better for us, better for me. For the tight end, I get a first read on a lot of plays.''
Davis was asked what would be realistic numbers he could achieve in this offense.
"Not exactly sure, but I'd like to have between 40 and 60 catches, at least,'' he said.
That might not be as far-fetched as it seems.
When Cutler and Brandon Marshall led the Broncos high-octane offense in 2008, Cutler threw for a career-high 4,526 yards, Marshall had 1,265 receiving yards with 104 catches and top tight end Tony Scheffler managed 40 catches for 645 yards. Daniel Graham, another Broncos' tight end, caught 32 passes for 389 yards that season.
Although the Bears have savvy veteran Matt Spaeth, second-year player Kyle Adams and rookie draft pick Evan Rodriguez, Davis is the key figure in the equation. The Bears gave up on their true pass-catching tight end when they traded Greg Olsen to the Panthers. Now, Davis has to be that guy.
A nagging back injury has limited Davis' workload this offseason, but he was on the field Wednesday and should be fully healthy for veteran mini-camp next week.
When asked if he could be a downfield threat for the Bears this season, the confident Davis answered, "Yes, I'm fast.''
Now Davis just has to stay up to speed. His teammates are confident he can meet those lofty expectations.
"For one, he's 6-foot-out-of-this-world,'' linebacker Lance Briggs said, marveling over Davis' height. "He's strong. The way the tight ends are being used in this league right now, Kellen fits right into that mold. He's a guy who, given the right opportunity, will be another game-changer.''

Got to get him the ball for that to happen McClure.
As an aside, I'm more excited about Rodriguez catching passes than Davis.

I've watched Davis practice at training camp, and he looks incredible as a receiver. He has great hands and runs sweet routes. He is a HUGE target for Cutler with a monster catching radius.
But Martz didn't use him much as a receiver.
Got rid of Olsen too - who will probably be a Pro Bowl TE this year. Madness. Utter madness. Hopefully Emery will bring sanity to the Bears.

Kellen Davis is a lot like Gronkowski, except bigger, and stronger, and faster.... Watch some footage from last year, you'll see him swatting line backers away like annoying little flies, trampling his way through the 2ndary to the end zone. He caught my eye last year in the 1st game of the season when jay dumped the ball off to him 5-7 yards behind the LOS. He fought to with in 2 yards of the line of scrimmage, but to do it he broke 3 tackles and it took 6-7 defenders to bring him down. The comment from the announcer, "About half the Falcons' defense brings him(KD) down.."
"Professional Armchair Quarterback" and other oxymora.....

He's shown a lot of potential but it seems like every time he made a spectacular play or a TD catch Martz went right back to ignoring him again. That was one of my biggest gripes about Martz. If something worked that was against his ideas of how the game should be played he stopped calling that play. Then he calls that stupid backdoor pass to Davis that got intercepted and returned for a TD in the Oakland game. I swear there were times I believed he was intentionally trying to make Hanie look bad and lose games.

Davis at 6'7" with his rare mixture of size and speed will stun fans in 2012!
LINK to the article
Kellen Davis could become the matchup nightmare for Jay Cutler.
For months the talk has surrounded the shiny, new Bears receiving corps led by Pro Bowl talent Brandon Marshall and second-round pick Alshon Jeffery. Together with sure-handed Earl Bennett and the speedy Devin Hester, Chicago suddenly has an array of different talents that could cause problems for even the great defenses.
Lost in that shuffle of speed and size is a young player who has flashed signs of both but until this season hasn't put them together. Kellen Davis could have left the Bears in free agency for the Dallas Cowboys, but instead the 6'7", 267-pound tight end came back to finish what he started.
Most fans in the Midwest know Davis as a blocker who might catch a pass once or twice a game, usually for a touchdown. Of the 28 passes he caught last season, five were for scores. Now fourth-year man finally has an offensive coördinator in Mike Tice who will shape game plans around throwing him the football, something Mike Martz didn't do.
Quarterback Jay Cutler said he likes throwing at big targets, which explains why the Chicago Bears front office went after Marshall in free agency and Jeffery in the draft. However, it's Davis and his rare mixture of size and speed that will stun fans in 2012.

I think he has more tools than Greg Olsen had. For one thing he's a much better blocker and much harder to bring down with just one guy and I really don't see much if any difference in their speed an ability to run deep seam routes. Just his size alone will make him tough to cover.
The Bears have structured this passing game so that every pass play someone will have single coverage and that's where Cutler can burn them. Why JA could never see that he had a tremendous talent in Cutler but a lousy supporting cast. You have to wonder if JA was still around would he have stepped up and matched or bettered the Cowboys offer?

I agree he has more tools. Truth be told Soul, I'm really not that impressed with how Olsen has turned out as a pro. He's a good player but he didn't become the Jeremy Shockey type player many envisioned. I mean look at what he did last year. 45rec for 540yds and 5TDs. He's 27 already.
His best season was with the Bears in '09 with 60rec and 612yds and 8TDs. I think we've seen Olsen's ceiling already.

He COULD be better then Olsen, but potential is a four letter word in my world. I'll wait to see it on the field. I think he could, but lets see it before we crown him.

So yea pretty much everyday I start looking more and more forward to the season, like Ric said he could be better than Olsen, but also just generally how much potential this team got if everything goes in our path.
I feel like this season is so much more hyped than last year, ofcause I won't here last year, but I just have a feeling this season is way more hyped, and for good reason.
