Cutler stands by offensive line concerns

Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler might have raised some eyebrows when he said last month that the offensive line was "definitely going to be a concern," but he found one important supporter in veteran center Roberto Garza.
"I talked to Garza about it and asked if anyone was offended. He said no. He agreed with me," Cutler said Friday on "The Waddle & Silvy Show" on ESPN 1000. "(I) didn't throw anyone under the bus, didn't name anybody specifically and say that they are a weak link. I just said until we get that front five we'll see what happens. And I want those guys to push each other. I want them to compete and try to get in that starting lineup. Once we get those front five down and get a few weeks under their belt we're going to be fine."
Cutler has been sacked 110 times in 41 regular-season games with the Bears. His 52 sacks in 2010 were a league high, and he was sacked 23 times last year in just 10 games before a thumb injury ended his season.
"The people in the Bears building are sometimes a little bit sensitive," Cutler said. "You always want to be pro-Bears and compliment your teammates and stuff but ... over a three-year career here (the offensive line is) definitely at the forefront of my mind ever year. Until we get those front five hammered down we're still kind of up in the air offensively even though we've got some really, really talented guys on the outside."

I couldn't remember if this was posted before and if so I apologize.
Cutler hits the nail on the head with what I've highlighted. Soon after the beginning of camp the best five have to be determined so that group can begin working with one another. The only was their gonna get better is to know their assignments better and the only way to get that way is through repetition.
If there's anywhere on this team that requires quick decisions about who and where it on the line. Tice should be able to decide relatively quickly who is the better man for LT. Either CWill is outplaying Webb or he's not. If he is fine, Webb works both sides of the line as the swing tackle. If not then get CWill back to LG and get him and Webb used to working next to one another.

Our pass protection problems last year seemed to often stem from a failure to understand blocking assignments when defenses blitzed. It often wasn't a 1-on-1 failure (although we had plenty of those too). It was sickening to watch defenders getting to Cutler untouched. Straight shot to Cutler, where they unloaded on him.
Hopefully with these guys having another year of experience now, they will quickly recognize blitzes and understand who is to block who out there.

I guess that says it all: he'll stand by the line and not behind it.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

I'll lay some of that at Martz feet as well. He wanted too many guys out in the pattern and hated to keep a back in to block. A lot of times the RB needs to recognize that blitz and stay home to pick it up or you keep the FB in to pass block and swing the RB out.
Martz believed that the five lineman should be able to handle the pass blocking and that was and always has been a huge flaw in his system. If you're gonna run 7 step drops and pass patterns that resolve 20 yards downfield you're not gonna block 5 or 6 guys rushing with just your lineman. Those blocking schemes lat year where he was trying to block DE's with a TE was ridiculous. They didn't come close to working.
With Tice in control of the offense I think we'll see the blocking schemes matched more closely to what the play requires. With the receivers we have he doesn't need 4 or 5 guys out in the patterns any longer so we should be able to run max protect schemes more often especially when we have Hester running go routes downfield.

I like these public comments by Cutler. A leader has to say these uncomfortable things. Its time to turn the heat up on the entire O-line and get these guys earning their paycheck.

Dont think it will work though, when we let Kreutz go, that probably sent the message that ALL of their jobs are up for grabs, and if they cant get it together soon, they will be replaced.
Of course, that depends on our Front Office actually FINDING replacements instead of ignoring the OL.

I like how he's not throwing a player under the bus publicly. But he is being honest about the unit. I like Cutler's honesty. He doesn't "filter" with "politically correct" talk like most use. You may not always like what he says, but it is refreshing to have a guy be honest with the players and fans. Of course he gets criticized by many for it. But I love it.

Exactly. What he did was to issue a challenge to those guys to get their act together but he did it in a very cool way. He didn't talk about them, instead he used the I approach and said he was concerned. Nobody got singled out and he never said anything about their performance just that he was concerned with so many positions unsettled. But the message got through to them I'm sure of that.
He's maturing into an offensive leader like he should. Two years ago he would never have said that or at least not in that way.

I wish people would get off of Cutler's back. A lot of people simply don't like the Chicago Bears - and they love to stir the crap about Cutler. It does tick me off.
