Unfinished Business; The Offensive Line............
Bears' unfinished business: offensive line
By Brad Biggs Tribune reporter 9:03 a.m. CDT, June 15, 2012
There is some unfinished business for the Chicago Bears on the offensive line and new position coach Tim Holt certainly will not dispute that.
While offensive coordinator Mike Tice is closely overseeing all business on the line, Holt was hired as the position coach and he’s excited about what is ahead for the group after the club wrapped up its minicamp and offseason program Thursday at Halas Hall.
“I am real happy with where they are,” Holt said. “I think the new offense is going to help them a lot. We’ve changed so much, like the drops. There are a lot more five-step, three-step, the ball is going to get out. That helps any O-line. And our run game is going to be nice. I am real excited because those guys worked very hard band we got a lot better on technique this spring.”
Tice and Holt don’t have a lot to evaluate at this point because offseason rules prevent the use of full pads and any contact. So, the focus was placed on technique work, the kind of detailed stuff that will be needed to improve the group. That includes footwork and handwork. Tice has stressed he wants the players to be much better with their hands this season, a message that has been sent to left tackle J’Marcus Webb, who has also been instructed to clean up his second step. In Thursday’s practice that was two hours, they spent 80 minutes on technique work as a position group.
But can Holt notice a difference?
“That’s all we can do,” Holt said. “You see it because we do the same drills everyday so it becomes muscle memory. You really see it when we watch the tape and it shows up. I think they are buying into a lot of the stuff we are doing.”
Holt got the job without knowing anyone in the building. He worked the past three seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, starting out as an intern in 2009. The Bucs liked him and he stayed around the entire season and slept on couches, putting in the kind of effort that people noticed. So, former Bucs coach Raheem Morris, who knows Lovie Smith well, put in a call on behalf of Holt. Longtime offensive line coach Pat Morris, who knows Tice, placed a call. Holt got an interview and he got the job.
“There were some mutual friends but I didn’t know anybody which is kind of rare,” Holt said.
Now, he’ll work to learn more about the craft under Tice while trying to complete the business the Bears need done on the line. Tice will run the meeting room similar in a lot of ways to how defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli oversees the defensive line, but Holt will have a prominent role.
“It’s tremendous,” Holt said. “Mike is a great coach. I get to learn some new things from him. We’re bouncing things off each other. It’s been a good mix so far.”

If Tice is gonna be as "hands on" with the line as this story indicates then it seems pretty reasonable to assume the Jeremy Bates will have a lot of input as far as game plans and play calling go. If the offense is to be patterned after the Bronco offenses of 2006-2008 then no one is in a better position to advise on how to run it successfully than Bates so I hope Tice gives him that opportunity.
I'm glad to hear that Tice is gonna stay closely connected to the lineman. I'm sure he aware that much of the success or failure of his offense is based on how that line performs. Most of these guys, CWill, Louis, Webb and now Carimi as well as his "project" guys. Those are the guys he's been building this line around and they're all still works in progress. Let's hope that work begins to pay off this year.

I like this section you highlighted. It seems to me that Tice may not be as gung-ho about Webb as some here seem to think. Don't get me wrong. I think Tice loves his size and athleticism, and wants him to succeed. But, I think Tice is smart enough to know if it just isn't going to click for a player. Webb is probably still the favorite right now to win the LT spot, but I think he has a much shorter leash than most seem to believe.

Now that Tice is the OC and not just the Line Coach his backing of Webb at all costs gets even more sensitive. His franchise QB has as much as come out and told him "you need to fix this problem" so the time for making excuses for him and accepting less should be over. Either the kid shows some real improvement in his game or he needs to be set aside.
You gotta think that Cutler may be pulling for CWill to win the battle. After all he was his blindside OT in college and Cutler has shown a lot of trust in guys he's played with successfully before. If at some point in time Webb was still struggling I wouldn't put it past Cutler to speak up and ask Tice to give CWill and honest shot at it for a while. Like I've been saying that could hardly make things worse unless for some reason he turns out to be the 33rd worst LT in the NFL.
The list of failed Bears players who were advertised as being athletic marvels is long and not so very distinguished and it starts with another Texas LT who was supposed to be God's gift to pass protection. As it turned out Stan Thomas couldn't block my grandmother and if he's not at the top of the list of worst draft picks he damn close to it. He's joined by quite a few others like Alonzo Spellman, John Thierry, Jarron Gilbert, Dan Bazuin, Michael Okwo, Bob Sapp and probably a few others I've overlooked.
It's time we started drafting and signing football players not track and field guys or weightlifters. Hell Webb is as big as a house so if he could just learn to stay in peoples way he should be able to play halfway decently.
