Somebody is going to pick him up whether by trade or after the Browns cut him.

I don't know much about CM and whether he might be "right" for us either, but I agree with the strategic thinking here. It would be nice to maintain a #2 who had at least some NFL experience.
Campbell isn't likely to stay and he's pricey. McCoy has some significant PT under his belt and he would prob come "cheap". It's not like McCown is anything but a placeholder #3 man anyway. Just a thought.
Maybe the Browns will get no bites and will end up cutting him do he can be had really, really cheap lol.

McCoy does come cheap. He's making $490k this year and $575 next and that's a liitle more than half what we're paying McCown. It may be a good situation for him for a couple if years being in this offense and maybe showing off in preseason that he has starters talents.
It's good for us as well since it takes care of a potential hole at the #2 QB spot before it happens so yeah it is good strategic thinking if Emery recognizes that. By next season it would also significantly cut the costs of what we're paying for a #2.
I believe the Browns will let him go just to be fair to him but I also know Mike Holmgren well enough to know that he'll try to squeeze at least something our of someone for him.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

I'd take McCoy; but I'd rather do it when he's a FA. He's lost all value b/c of them picking their future qb in the first round.

Well the disadvantage to trading for him is that we give up a late round pick but you have to ask yourself would we have spent that pick on another rookie QB anyway? Then all it comes down to is whether or not McCoy is a better choice than an unproven rookie. That much I don't know.
The advantage is that we get him for a known amount of money ($1 mil and change) over the next two years. So roughly $500k per year which is $3 mil less than Campell is costing us and we have and extension for Cutler on the horizon so cutting the cost of our backups should be a goal of Emery's.
I'm just thinking ahead here. I don't know if he's that right guy or not but a QB with starting experience and decent stats with a crappy team at that price is attractive.

One advantage is that we would have two very tradable comodities when/if someone's starter goes down and their backup or backup backups not capable of handling the job; ie KC. And it wouldn't leave us short on a capable backup.

True, good thinking. That's being opportunistic. What makes McCoy pretty valuable even if you have to give up a pick for him is that 3rd round contract. He got his SB upfront and then minimum salaries over the rest of the deal. To me that's attractive and it may negate the need for a search for a #2 next year if we bring him in as the #3 this year.

BTW, think the browns are idiots if Seneca Wallace is their best backup....

For a 6th id say why not gives us a cheap backup for next year and gives him time to develop to possibly go start somewhere in the future
Also as extremely unlikely as it is, its not unheard of to have 2 qbs go down over the course of a season
