Would Colt McCoy Be Worth a 2013 Pick?.............

Report: Browns don't want to release McCoy

Cleveland willing to take small return in trade for QB. Terry McCormick

    June 15, 2012, 02:35 PM EST

Colt McCoy was dealt a bad hand in Cleveland, from the poor supporting cast last year to the concussion against Pittsburgh to the drafting of Brandon Weeden to replace him. But, according to Tony Grossi of ESPNCleveland.com, the Browns don't want to add insult to injury by just dropping McCoy on the waiver wire and releasing him.

Browns president Mike Holmgren sort of danced around the topic of whether or not he would keep both McCoy and Seneca Wallace to back up Weeden.

“Right now, we have three quarterbacks that are going,” Holmgren said. “Between now and the time we play our first ballgame against the Eagles, I would ask you, you shouldn’t be surprised by anything. We are going to be talking to teams about a lot of different things, not just the quarterback situation. That’s what happens and then as you approach the regular season, when you get to final cutdown, there is a lot of action that takes place.

“I think you are open to listen to every phone call. You talk about stuff. If we think it’s a good thing to make the Cleveland Browns better, then we would consider it.”

So if the Browns are open to McCoy not being part of the team in 2012, but don't want to outright cut him, then they need a trade partner, and, according to Grossi, won't ask for much in return to find McCoy a new location.

Not exactly Bears related but not completely unrelated either.

I think we're all pretty certain that Jason Campbell's stay in Chicago will be brief. Anyone who takes the #2 job in Chicago knows that he's not competing for a starting spot. If it was an open competition then Campbell would have been looking for at least a two or three year deal. Next year he'll look for a spot where he can compete for a starting position.

McCown is only signed for this year as well and even if that was not the case he's not what you'd want as a #2 guy anyway. Behind him all we'll have is Matt Blanchard assuming he makes the PS and even if he does going from there to a #2 spot is expecting a bit much. All that does is risk another deal like we had with Hanie.

So planning ahead if Colt McCoy could be had now for a low round pick in 2013 would you attempt to make that deal? Is he a guy who'd make a good #2 QB behind Cutler. There's been a lot of discussion about how we've spent too much money insuring that #2 QB spot with Campbell getting $3.5 mil and even #3 McCown is getting $875k on a one year deal.

Since McCoy is under contract for this year ($490k) and next ($575k) he represents a lower cost #3 than McCown and by bringing him in to learn the offense now as a #3 we have him in a spot to take over the #2 spot next year. I don't deny that we spent pretty heavily bolstering that QB spot but after last year's disaster it would have been more bizarre if they hadn't. Still, that $3.5 mil might have gotten us another FA or allowed us to keep one of our own like Okoye.

So if your Phil Emery do you get on the horn with Mike Holmgren and find out what he'd accept in exchange for Colt McCoy. It sure seems like somebody is gonna end up with him so would Chicago be as good a place as any?

I wouldn't oppose it, but Bears wont do it as they do not need him.

depends on the round. I'd take him as this year's 3rd (over McCown) QB and next year's 2nd for nothing more than a 5th round pick...

As opposed to Angelo it seems that Emery is much better at thinking ahead. From a monetary point of view it makes good sense and may eliminate the need to spend that late round pick on an unknown QB prospect anyway. We need a couple of guys in the hopper and at least with McCoy you know what you're getting and what you're not getting.

He's not prototypical as far as his size is concerned and that as much as anything may be why we wouldn't have an interest but he's mobile and not a bad passer. His stats are nothing to write home to momma about but consider who he's been playing for. Surround him with better talent and he may be quite good.

I don't know. It was just a thought I picked up on when I read that the Browns will probably be looking to find a home for him now that they've committed themselves to Weeden. He has about a year and a half experience as a starter and the price is right. Somewhere along the line we need to be thinking about that #2 spot for 2013 so I just thought I'd toss this out.

I haven't really done any research to see who else might be hitting FA after this year but unless we plan on trying to entice Campbell to stick around with a very pricey deal we'll need to find someone.

You bring up some good points, Soul, and I can't disagree. He's young (w/ some NFL experience), cheap, and has had nothing to work with surrounding him. You're also right that it is unlikely Campbell (or McCown) will be here a year from now anyway so we are gonna need another QB.

With Enderle now gone, CM would be a fine #3 pickup. Dump McCown. Put Blanchard on the PS. Next year you could hopefully elevate those two guys to #2 and #3 respectively. Only question is: what would you give up for him?

Holmgren doesn't seem to be expecting much, nor should he. Would a 6th get the deal done? I wouldn't go much above that as we are already missing our 3rd next year. Interesting idea though...

Depends if he still has the upside factor otherwise might as well just use that draft pick on a qb and develop someone like pats do

The Chiefs and Bucs are two teams I can think of immediately that are likely to switch QBs after this season.....

7th rd pick sure. Wouldn't give more than that considering they sound desperate to move him.

My guess is they're looking for something between a 5th and a 7th MP. Maybe something conditional like a 6th that turns into a higher pick if he plays a certain number of snaps.

I don't know what his upside is mo and that's why I just tossed it out. He may not be the type we're looking for. I've never watched him play so I know almost nothing about him except what I've read.

He had a good college career and his stats are pretty decent considering where he was playing. I would think he'd do better with the tools the Bears have. I also don't know about the concussion that sunk him last year. I just know his old man wasn't happy with the way it was dealt with.

My guess is a guy like McCoy is a safer be than depending on two rookies as backups. That's what you'd have if you drafted a guy in the late rounds and elevated Blanchard from the PS if he even makes the PS.

If the Bears are gonna stay competitive despite an injury to Cutler we don't want to slide back into depending on unfinished and under prepared QB's again. To me a guy with at least some starting experience is a necessity.
