There is no way the improvement of the Bears offense doesn't make them a better team than the Lions. I'm not sure that translates into offensively being equal with the Packers, but as you've said... The lousy play of the Packer defense allowed the Bears to remain extremely competitive.
Bears fans act like the Packer D will remain as it was, and automatically assume vastly improved play of the Bears offense. While I agree that the Bears offense is greatly improved, I don't discount the Packers draft class. Vast majority of draft picks went to shore up some of the defensive needs, and while they aren't "seasoned" players, they aren't scrubs either. The addition of Perry alone should cause fits for offensive lines. Double teaming Matthews isn't gonna be much of an option anymore. Of course, like all drafts, that depends on how the player develops during transition from NCAAFB to the NFL. Perry has the size and speed, so as long as he is developed correctly, him and Clay could make one hell of an anchor to a defensive line.
Will the defense be as good as it was a couple of years ago? Probably not yet, but they WILL be better than last year.
