And some of the possiblilites of the past also... The Ernie Davis' and Bo Jackson's of this game make me realize how crazy good and lucky these players listed were. I flip flop the rankings in my own mind.

Taking me back to the mid and late 80's when I was introduced to the game I can remember Bo and Payton were the only two backs that really got me excited to watch. Jackson was my favorite, but then again I missed out on much of WP by then.

I used to love watching Bo play too. Man if he only concentrated on football and never got hurt...

He was a special player. Adrian Peterson is the closest player that I've ever seen that's as close to Bo's talent.

Also, I'm not sure Sayers belongs in the top 10. Yea its blasphemy in Chi-Town but top 10 is a pretty distinct honor.

They Sayers argument is an interesting one. Because he had such a short career, not many think he belongs. But look at what he did in those short number of years. Had he played a full career that was not shortened by injury, he could very well be at the top of that list.

I agree his numbers for such a few short years was just disturbing, especially for the era he played in.

Sanders... one thing that's consistently dropped from the discussion on where he should be on a list like this, is the rest of the team.

Sanders played on an awful team. I mean, a god-awful team. For the entire time he was there. There was nothing - nothing! - no one else on that roster that had an impact.

Payton started out playing on a crappy team, but by the end was part of perhaps the most dominant team of that decade (arguably).

So whenever you think about Sanders, just consider what he could have accomplished had there been an offensive line, a reliable quarterback, some wide receivers that could keep the defense honest. Frankly, it boggles the mind the kind of stats he could have accumulated. And had The Lions had a more rounded roster, I have no doubt that Sanders would have played longer.

    Something you guys should consider.

    Something Matt Forte should consider.

Eh, no back would ever be allowed to stick around as long as WP Sanders and Smith were allowed. Backs are old at 28 now apparently. Can you imagine if these guys were replaced 4-8 years after they were drafted?

Top 10 RBs in the modern NFL era, not top 10 people in the modern NFL era

Maybe the NFL can't Benji but around my place I can erase that low life murdering, scum sucking, mother frocker anytime and anyway I choose. And besides if MLB can refuse Pete Rose a place in the HOF just because he bet on some BB games what's wrong with the NFL revoking the hero status of a man who committed a double murder and then got arrested and is doing time for a different felony?

Shoot they want to suspend some NO Saint football players because they suspect a bounty system was used but OJ can stay a hero and a HOF'er because he's simply a part of football lore and history and was a great RB.?

Yes he was a great RB in his day but since those days he's become a worthless, low life, scum sucking, murdering, robbing, felonius bastard who the law finally caught up with and that's the way he'll be remembered from now on not as a great RB.

Best all around open field runner of all time. Barry could run with a football as well as anyone but Gale could run, catch, throw the HB option, and return punts and kickoff for TD's. In that era nobody did what he did in as little time as he had to do it in. And 22 TD's as a rookie in a 14 games season and from anywhere on the field, running, receiving and returning. Nobody has done it all like that since. He's gotta be top ten.
