    Alonzo Spellman Released From Jail................Again!..........

Ex-Bear Alonzo Spellman released from jail

    ASSOCIATED PRESS June 19, 2012 11:50AM

    Updated: June 19, 2012 12:21PM

TULSA, Okla. — Former NFL defensive lineman Alonzo Spellman has been released from the Tulsa County Jail after pleading no contest to a variety of charges.

Online court records indicate Spellman pleaded no contest Monday to 10 counts filed in 2008. They include two felonies — eluding a police officer and assault with a dangerous weapon — and misdemeanors including obstructing an officer and public intoxication.

Spellman was sentenced to one year in jail and was released after receiving credit for time already served.

Spellman’s attorney, David Phillips, did not immediately return a call seeking comment but has said Spellman has a mental illness.

Spellman played for the Bears, the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions, finishing his NFL career in 2001.

You know Soul I have a real sore spot for Alonzo. Just a real tragedy right there. What an incredible physical specimen he was. Thought he was going to be a star.

I don't think there's ever been a better example of what trouble a person with an unchecked, untreated Bi-Polar disorder can get himself into. I've lost track of how may times he's been arrested and jailed or hospitalized over the past 20 years or so.

All I can say is with his size Zo has to be one scary dude when he's working off a manic high. Woooo!

Kinda sad really. He was a guy who had all the physical tools but he had one hell of an intense mood disorder to go with it. It just seems like he won't stay with his meds so every once in a while it "sky blue yonder time"

He's not stupid just mentally ill to an extreme. He's like that O-Lineman from Oakland Barrett Robbins that the police had to shoot to subdue. Zo is probably lucky that hasn't happened to him yet. Like I said he's gotta be one scary dude when he hits those highs.

One of the reasons some of these guys won't stay on their meds is that they love to experience those highs when they start. I think that's what they loved about playing football. They could play great when the were in that slightly altered state. Your strength increases and you really feel like you can lick the world.

The problem is those highs don't stay like that. They increase exponentially until they're foaming at the mouth and if you add alcohol or drugs to that you'd almost have to shoot them with a tranquilizer dart meant for a rhino stop slow them down. Scary stuff.

My wife's aunt(kinda) is bi polar, the reason she didn't stay on them is b/c she would feel normal for so long she didn't think she needed them....then slipped slowly into a nut job. Uncle got real scared multiple times and had to divorce her.

Sorry but I don't think he is just bi polar or something like that...that doesn't make you a criminal that's a weak excuse.

Sorry but I don't think he is just bi polar or something like that...that doesn't make you a criminal that's a weak excuse.

But he is Bi-Polar Ric. He was diagnosed as Bi-Polar years ago. I'm not just making that up.

It may not make you a criminal but it does pretty much crater your judgement when you're on that skyrocketing manic high. You feel invincible and rational thought pretty much goes out the window causing you to attempt things or say things you'd never do when you were in a more level state. People can rage and get quite violent when they're on a manic high. It may not actually create a problem that wasn't already there but it may reveal one that no one knew about.

Unlike a depression where the operating level of your neurotransmitters is low just the opposite happens. It's like your brain is turbo charged and you're hyper energetic and your thoughts are racing a hundred miles an hour. It's pretty much action first thought second when you reach that stage. Kind of like the brains natural equivalent of "tweaking" on methamphetamines.

What you aunt experiences is pretty typical. You feel fine so you stop talking the meds and nothing happens.....at least not immediately. Then wham, you're in a major mood swing you didn't even see coming down the pike. It brings on all kinds of addictions and a whole lot of divorces.

The sad part for a guy like Zo is that if he'd stay with his treatment and on his meds 80%-90% of the problem would probably be solved. It's not presently curable so it's something you need to learn how to live with and control.

Of all forms of mental illness it's one of the most if the not the most punishing one because you're going from those manic highs to suicidal lows in a never ending cycle. That's why the suicide rate is so high for those with serious Bi-Polar disorders.

I'm not saying he's not, I'm saying it's not just that he's bi polar that he does these things.

That's why I was saying that it may not create all of those problems just reveal them. There's no question that the darker side of everyone's personality emerges from time to time. The difference is with a Bi-Polar you know exactly when it's gonna emerge and what it may be capable of doing. It's something to be avoided if and when you have a choice.

I've been up and down that highway so many times that I could run it with my eyes closed. I know every twist and bend. These days I stay on a different road as much as I can. The other one has few if any guardrails and a very steep cliff at the end.
