If they franchise Forte this year, and next year, it's going to cost the Bears ~$17 mil. So, wouldn't it make financial sense to lock him up in a multi-year contract that only gives him $18 mil in guarantees? If the Bears only get this year and next out of him, they really don't lose much money. But if he DOES have more left in the tank, we get his services at a very fair price. It just seems to make sense for the Bears to do this. Not to "reward" Forte, but to get the most bang for the buck. Yes, they could simply draft another RB next year, but we have SO many needs right now, it would be nice not to have to add RB to the list for draft day.

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

That has been Souls reasoning for believing they did. And it's a good theory and I think it's very plausible.
2 points of contention to that though, do the Bears want to give him a multi year deal at all? or just FT him 1 x and move onto something/one else. It's possible ecspeically if they really do worry about his knees.
2nd point, does Forte want to take a 4-5 year deal worth 17-18 mi(guarantees)l knowing they probably won't FT him next year b/c of the 9+ mil cap hit, and probably could get a 13-17 mil guaranteed contract in FA(if he stays healthy), which would allow him the money he wants when you add into that this years 7mil payday.

Last year they gambled he would take a sweetheart deal for them and he didn't, or they purposefully offered him a lowball offer they knew he wouldn't take, but were happy if he did. That's been my personal belief, but I hope I'm wrong. I home they have offered him a 17-18 mil deal for 4 years b/c that makes him a Bear for life and would give a the Bears a guaranteed 1200-1500 yard back for the next 3-4 years also.

There is lies a huge issue. Why sign a 4 year deal w/less guarantees then the 2 1yr deals you're looking at getting?
He shouldn't assume that he has the second year in the bag. The Bears may walk away from that sort of pay for Forte. I'm not saying it's right and I'm not saying it's wrong. All I am saying is that he may be playing one year under the FT and then we turned out as a FA. What he will get as a one year older back depends on any injuries and his performance. Signing a two year guaranteed deal at what his two years FT numbers would be would gaurantee him that he basically gets franchised for two years no matter what happens. At that point he would become a FA and get whatever he could get.

I'm just saying that going for a deal like that may sound stupid initially, but it has merit.

Not sure how he's just going to assimilate into a new playbook with new players on offense. Timing, mental mistakes, and general game shape through play prep are effected at least to some degree. There might be some reluctance to start him or even play him depending on how things pan out. Hurts the team imo.

He leaves himself open to injury which is the worst thing that can happen to a relatively young player on a one year deal.

If he runs into the back of his own linemen and gets tired he can hurt himself. If he's going to run on eggshells then he's of limited use.

I don't claim to have a clue as to how it really will play out. If I was Forte I'd have to factor in the possibility that if I play this year under the FT and I end up being used more sparingly, my value may diminish for the 2013 season. Heck it could drop to the point the Bears don't have to FT him again. Especially if he gets injured again. I'm not saying this will happen, but you have to think of the possibilities and liabilities here if you are Matt.

No matter how many times I run all of the possible scenarios through my pea brain, I keep coming back to the same place - that it is in BOTH the best interests of Forte AND the Bears to compromise to a long term deal with around $18 mil in guaranteed money.

Forte has a 1yr $8 million contract waiting for him to sign. Its evident the Bears will not be upping their current offer. Act like a professional, or at least pretend to be one, and sign your deal and report. You want to make the Bears look bad? Put up 1600yds on the ground and 15TDS. Until then, the Bears shouldn't budge one bit and they should dump this disgruntled chump after 2012 regardless if anyone is willing to offer a pick or not. This festering like this is not good for the franchise. And while the players may not come out and say it...BBPB guarantees that there are going to be a lot of vets in that locker room that are not going to be happy with a Forte holdout. A lot of guys are running out of time for a SB.
