CHICAGO -- Chicago Bears wide receiver Johnny Knox said there's still no timetable for a return to the football field as he continues his rehabilitation from surgery to stabilize a vertebra in his back.

"No, for me I'm just taking it day by day," Knox told reporters at a Nike softball event on Thursday in Lincoln Park. "No rush. Like I've said, rehab is going well. I'm not trying to rush things and mess things up any worse, so I'm just taking it day by day."

Sidelined since injuring his back Dec. 18 against the Seattle Seahawks, Knox has continued to rehab at Halas Hall. Knox has still been relegated to jogging and has yet to start running. He also remains under his playing weight; he estimated that he's around 170 pounds, adding, "I've got a lot of work to do."

Knox said the Bears have not broached the subject of placing him on injured reserve -- "There's still a ways to go," he said -- and right now he's just focusing on short-term goals.

"Just get stronger, that's my main goal right now," he said. "No rush. I'm going by what the trainers and the doctors say and that's what I'm going to go by."

Knox did not walk with a limp on Thursday nor did he swing a bat through three innings of a 16-inch softball game for Nike's North Side-South Side Softball Challenge. Knox captained the North Siders while White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski was the South Side captain. Players were chosen through a Twitter contest.

It was always a pipedream to see this guy go back on the field this year. I just hope he can fully recover and play next year. If not I think he's done for good.

Get well JK, you got a long life after football, don't F it up by coming back less then 100%.

Yeah, I've said it before. I don't see it ending well as far as his being able to be a productive football player again. I'd sure like to see him come back and get rewarded with at least one big contract for his wear and tear, but I think that bus left the station. I just hope he can have a normal life.

As long as he doesn't rush his recovery I see him coming back next season. He will be on I.R. for sure this year though.

I wonder if they consider it a good or bad sign he's jogging right now. If later this year he were able to start running would that be allow him to get back into game shape by next year?

I hope for OMC's outlook, I fear that BiH is probably a more realistic outlook though.

Agree with everyone here. After seeing that hit, images of Willis McGahee and Joe Theismann crossed my mind. We don't need him this year, and honestly it gives us a better chance to see Sanzanbacher in action without having to be Cutler's main target (just think of how silly last year's offense in the beginning will look compared to this year)...

I hope he's back in action at some point in the future, but I have that sick feeling that he is up against it bigtime here. Maybe it will be like Gale Sayer's injury, which at the time was pretty horrific too. A lot of people didn't believe he could come back. But he did.

But he was never quite the same player again.
    Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

This was really the most disgusting thing I've ever saw live on the field; since wendell davis blew out his knees in Philly. And we all know what that led too for Davis.

The only good thing I read in the article (and it is a mojor good thing) is that he is now walking without a limp. That means progress is still being made. Who knows I could be wrong - and I'd love it if I was.

Not limping anymore? That's an awesome sign right there. Keep it up Johnny. You will be back!
