Do we finally have enough safeties?

This article hit a nerve with me. Not the article itself, but it seems like the safety position has bled us to death with the endless parade of players we've brought in at the position.

Are we that inept at player personnel evaluation at this position? Or is it just one more "Jerry Angelo problem" that has killed us over the years?

Think of how much better we would be right now if Jerry had "got it right" at safety years ago and spent those draft picks on other positions of need (like oline, CB, LB etc).

NFC North: 2012 NFL hidden treasure

Examining a position group that could exceed its preseason expectations:

The Chicago Bears' annual search for long(er)-term answers at safety has turned up some interesting possibilities for 2012.

Rookie Brandon Hardin, a third-round draft pick, was one of the standouts of offseason practice, in part because of his unusual 6-foot-3 frame. History suggests Hardin will get his starting chance sooner rather than later. Hardin was a cornerback at Oregon State, which can translate well into coverage skills for safeties at the professional level.

Along with Hardin, the Bears have a second-year prospect in Chris Conte, who made a positive impression last season before suffering a foot injury. Coach Lovie Smith has long been a fan of Major Wright, and veteran Craig Steltz hasn't embarrassed anyone in the short stints he has received in recent years.

    yes yes we have been.

The sad part is the S is a key position to the Cover 2, and yet we have failed to hit that since Mike Brown retired b/c of injuries. Hell I think Mike Green was S also? Both were the last standout S's we had.

I was wondering how many safeties we went through under Jerry Angelo's watch. I found the following defensive backs, but didn't sort out the safeties. But it is mind boggling all the same. We went through 64 defensive backs (those that actually made the final roster).

Makes you wonder if a few of these guys had worked out, maybe we could have had drafted some decent WR's and had them in place when Cutler first got here - and had a rock solid oline too. Cutler could have had a far different start in Chicago.

Makes you realize just how bad Jerry Angelo was at the draft. Pitiful.

2 be fair some of those also weren't drafted. And some were okay, but never stuck.

I should have made that more clear. These are the guys who made the final rosters. Don't you think in those 64 attempts JA could have drafted us a decent LT that could have been in place when Cutler got here? How about "real" WR's that Cutler could have used to actually run decent routes, who were not stone-handed midgets?

    It makes me really angry.

I think Jerry Angelo believed that "He who dies with the most DB's, and fewest decent WR's and oline guys" wins the game.

Just to think, he wasted a pick on Haynes, when Polamalu was waiting in the wings....

That's longer than our qb list lol. Yeah I hope were done with the safety carousel. If not I hope Emery goes FA. It's time to start scouting cb's and lb's.

I still wish we could have drafted Bob Sanders.

    One consideration about that list...

When special teams is a priority, you will be picking up players that fit under the "DB" label. I think the list could be filtered down, to better target the saftey position. However, I think the point your making JABF99 is valid, and surprised me.

Cameron Worrell is listed 3 times and Todd Johnson is listed twice.

Still, quite a list, even once you eliminate the CB's (including Hester).
