This off-season has been a busy one for the Chicago Bears, who expected to contend last season until injuries derailed those hopes. The team wasn't "properly prepared" for those hits, Bears Chairman George McCaskey says in this four-part Crain's Business of Sports interview.
In the videos, Mr. McCaskey talks about the decision to fire former General Manager Jerry Angelo and working with the new GM, Phil Emery, and the importance of finding the right players to fill holes in case those bad breaks happen again. The main thing, though, is to get into the playoffs. "You have to get in the playoffs to make hay," he says, and points to Super Bowl champs the New York Giants, who overcame their own problems and got hot at the right time.

Mr. McCaskey also shared his experiences in his first year as chairman. He said the best piece of advice he received was that "less is more."
"People don't want to see ownership putting themselves out there all the time. . . .The spotlight is on the players."
He later talks about his family's ownership of the Bears and the emotional ups and downs that come with being chairman.
Lastly, Mr. McCaskey discusses the 10th anniversary of the new Soldier Field. He talks about the challenges of having a stadium with the smallest capacity in the NFL and the controversial exterior design.

I think George McCaskey is going to be a solid chairman. He seems thoughtful, but able to act decisively for the good of the team (booting Jerry Angelo and bringing in Emery).

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

Well, I was looking forward to Virginia having to sell the team, now I would like to see George stay at the helm, but he may go when she dies. I am assuming they will have to sell the team for tax reasons.

If George does prove to be an excellent chairman, I hope that the team somehow remains in Papa Bear's family. I've heard the same thing you have, that the team may have to be sold when Virginia dies. I'd hate to see that.

FWIW, I've always like Virginia. I've seen pictures of her with her dad, going to games. Clearly she idolized Papa Bear, and I think she's wanted to do right for the team since he died - even though it hasn't always gone so well with the team.

Wouldn't it be great if her son, George, could build a dynasty that his grandpa Halas would be proud of?
