    FINALLY A GOOD ONE!

Clyde "Bulldog” Turner excelled as a premier center and linebacker for the Chicago Bears for 13 seasons. Yet had it not been for a fortunate set of circumstances while he was still a college player at Hardin-Simmons University, he might never have had the chance to play in the National Football League. Pro football scouting was in the early stages in the late 1930s. Most teams relied on football magazines with their traditional pre-season All-America selections. Players from little-known colleges simply weren't included. Yet not one but two NFL teams eagerly sought Turner.
A Hardin-Simmons fan tipped off Frank Korch, a Bears scout, about Turner's abilities during his junior season. After watching Turner, Korch convinced coach George Halas the Bears should draft him. Meanwhile, the Detroit Lions were so sure they had convinced Turner to turn down offers from other NFL teams they didn’t even bother to draft him.
For the Bears, acquiring Turner in the first round of the 1940 draft proved to be a masterstroke. For both, the 1940 season marked the beginning of a period of dominance of their particular specialties, the Bears in winning championships and Turner in becoming the best all-round center in pro football. As a linebacker who was blessed with halfback speed, Turner, in 1942, led the league in interceptions with eight.
On offense, he was a flawless snapper and an exceptional blocker who could also play guard or tackle. Never was his versatility more evident than in 1944 when he was asked to fill in as a ball carrier in an emergency situation. He consistently ground out long gains, including a 48-yard touchdown romp. Three years later against Washington, Turner came up with what he called the favorite play of his career, a 96-yard interception return for a touchdown.

The Bears drafted Mannelly in the sixth round of the 1998 NFL Draft. He has played in 200 games with the Bears over his twelve year career. Currently, Mannelly is the longest tenured player on the team's current roster, and on September 27, 2010, Mannelly broke Steve McMichael's Chicago Bears record for most games played as a Bear, with 192. In 2006, kicker Robbie Gould claimed that Mannelly played a pivotal part of his productive season, and praised him in his Pro Bowl acceptance speech. Additionally, many of Mannelly's teammates consider him one of the NFL's unsung heroes. In a 2011 game against the San Diego Chargers, Mannelly ruptured his ACL, and was placed on injured reserve

He was originally selected by the Atlanta Falcons with the 99th overall pick of 2001 NFL Draft from Texas A&M University-Kingsville. Garza played with the Falcons up until the 2004 season when his contract was up. He signed a one year contract with the Chicago Bears in 2005 and a six year contract extension in 2006. Garza was chosen to be the cover athlete of the Spanish version of Madden 09 En Espaņol. Among the 1,700 NFL players in the 2006 season, Garza was one of only 19 Hispanics. In 2012, Garza, along with teammate and defensive end Henry Melton were named to the 2012 All-Joe Team

Bill George became the NFL's first middle linebacker when he began dropping off the line from his middle guard position in 1954. Attended Wake Forest, was all-NFL eight times in nine years and made eight straight pro bowls. Played through the 1965 season, but knew his career was over when Bears drafted his replacement, Dick Butkus. Elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974. Died of injuries sustained in a car accident in 1982.

Yeah there is. Change that Omiyale to Osborn.

Jim Osborn was a pretty damn good undersized DT from the early 70's to the early 80's. He teamed up with Alan Page for the few years Page played for the Bears to give us a couple of good but lightweight inside pass rusher.

Osborn went 6'3" and 245-250lbs and when Page played for the Bears he weighed just 225lbs. After spending most of his career as one of Minny's "Purple People Eater" playing at 245-250lbs the Vikes released him after he dropped to 225lbs and refused to add weight. Their loss was our gain because he had a few good years with the Bears before he retired.

Jim Osborne gave us 13 seasons at DT from 1972 to 1984, and he started 154 games for us. The poor guy retired the year before the Super Bowl win. He won the Brian Piccolo award (The Bears players vote amongst themselves for the rookie and veteran who best exemplify the courage, loyalty, teamwork, dedication and sense of humor of the late Brian Piccolo).
Oops, sorry brother. We both had the same guy in mind but you had him in mind a week before I did. I should have looked farther down the page before I posted. Didn't mean to double up.

Well at least we know that great minds (or old/mature/vintage minds) think alike. He was always one of my favorite players during his career. Kind of unsung in the scheme of things but a very productive guy during his career although unfortunately they weren't keeping sack stats for most of it. If they were he'd be among the Bears all time leaders.

In the 1984 NFL Draft, Rivera was selected in the second round by the Chicago Bears, becoming the first Puerto Rican/Mexican to play in the NFL. During the 1985 season, Rivera played in Super Bowl XX, where the Bears beat the New England Patriots, 46-10. He thus became the first Puerto Rican to play on a Super Bowl Championship Team. Rivera played for the Bears for a total of nine seasons (1984–1992).

On January 23, 2004, Rivera was named the Chicago Bears Defensive Coordinator. In 2005, the Chicago Bears defense was rated second-best in the NFL. The Bears qualified for the NFC playoffs losing in the 2nd Round to the Carolina Panthers 29-21. The 2005 performance of the Chicago Bears earned him consideration for Head Coach assignments from several NFL teams. In 2006, the Bears’ defensive efforts failed to match the success of their 2005 season. Nevertheless, the team was still a notable presence in league, finishing with the league’s third ranked and conference’s top-ranked points allowed category. The defense’s success earned Rivera recognition among franchises looking for new head coaches. The Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers interviewed him in January 2007. He was a candidate for the vacant Dallas Cowboys head coaching position, a job that ultimately went to San Diego Chargers defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. Rivera was named as a potential candidate to replace the fired Marty Schottenheimer in San Diego, but the job was filled by Norv Turner, the brother of fellow offensive coordinator, Ron Turner, Rivera's offensive counterpart in Chicago. After the announcement, ESPN reported that the Bears were considering letting Rivera go. This came after several other teams interviewed him, and the negotiations between his representatives and the Bears were making little progress. On February 19, 2007, it was announced that Ron Rivera's contract with the Bears would not be renewed.
