Hester to help 4-year-old cancer victim

Hester has always seemed to have a heart of gold. Like a kid who never completely grew up (I mean this in a good sense). He's just full of life. I'll bet he's a wonderful teammate who keeps things fun too.

I'm mighty glad we drafted Hester. Some of my best times as a fan have been watching him work magic on returns. My heart almost stops every time he fields a punt or kickoff. The entire stadium seems to hold its breath to see if he'll take another one "to the house".

Sean Keller, 4, laughs at his brother Liam, 8, while reading a book Tuesday with his sister Amelia, 11, in their home in Marengo. Sean was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in August. Bears player Devin Hester will be signing autographs in Crystal Lake on July 21 to raise money in support of the Keller family. (Mike Greene – mgreene@shawmedia.com)

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

Yeah, Hester truly is a class act. Feels good to draft (and keep) a player of that caliber who also is a great example of a human being.

"The Hester charity signing will start at 6 p.m. He will autograph any item for $79. Personal inscriptions are an additional $30. Professional photographs will be taken with Hester for groups of up to five people for $89."

I like Hester and on the surface it appears like a good deed, but look below the surface a little fellas. Hester isn't opening up his personal wallet and giving this family money. There are a lot of people, WHOSE NAME WILL NEVER BE MADE KNOWN TO THAT 4 YEAR OLD, who are the real heroes in this. They're the ones donating money to the child, not Hester.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this post, but it bugs me when people genuflect before those who aren't opening up their wallet to do squat. And that's cool if people don't want to give. But Hester is going to be taking credit for money being given by other people. Yea I have a problem with that kind of phony, self aggrandizing giving. You see this all the time with many famous people. They start organizations and use other people's money and take credit for the giving. No different here. Yea Hester is showing up and giving away other people's money and taking full credit for it and that just isn't cool in my book. Recognize the people who are actually make this possible Hester because you are not writing this family a personal check.

Actually, it doesn't matter one bit whether Devin is or isn't giving dollars from his own wallet, because his presence is a MAJOR donation in and off itself. I'm willing to go out on a limb and say the money raised from his autograph session AND HIS TIME are his donation to this particular cause. The big, BOLDED words at the top of your post that read "charity signing" are a dead giveaway.

Sheesh.....people pick the weakest battles these days. el-oh-el

You can bet Hester is giving money in this situation. But he isn't about being public about it. In fact, I would bet that other Bears will be chipping in on this too. It would be pretty crass to give money in a sad situation like this - and brag about it.

NFL players do a lot of good that we don't see. We mostly just read about the players who get into trouble.

agreed. Jay, even when he was one of the most hated sports figures in the world, was an adamant charity worker type of guy. Hasn't he went so far as building schools in Africa?

It's nice to know that some of our guys are stand up individuals. Just another reason why our Bears are one of the greatest organizations in the world of sports. I'm sure there's a "Brandon Marshall is a head case and his off the field issues will divide our locker room" crowd on this forum, just like most Bears forums, but in the grand scheme our team is filled with pretty high character guys. A player like Brandon couldn't possibly find himself surrounded by a better group of people while he's working to better himself mentally and grow as a person...

I've been a Bears fan for a long long time. Over 50 years now. I've seen some of our players over those years do some very good things off the field. You often don't see it get into the papers. But they're doing incredibly good things all the same. Good men. Great character.

Even little things, like signing autographs. My son, when he was a young boy, had an opportunity to get autographs from different players. It was humbling to see how some (some) of the Bears would even take the time to talk with him a bit. Kyle Orton was a great guy off the field.

I know who you are, man. I used to post on the CBMB. ...and you're right, we've been lucky, as fans, to have witnessed some of the great Bears over the years. One word, Sweetness....

I had the same name on the CBMB. Same avitar too (I'm not very imaginative

This board has a lot of good posters here. Some guys with high football IQ's. It's pretty quiet this week though. Who were you on the CBMB?

I've had a couple handles on the CBMB over the years, but I wasn't a "good" poster this last go round (latest handle was cemetarian). At some point, months back I suppose, I stopped trying to reason with folks over there and turned most of my attention to towards making Spartan cry and exposing the ignorant & one-sided arguments/opinions of guys like WOLE and Soothsayer.

I guess the mods of the CBMB hate those who troll the trolls (while allowing the ACTUAL trolls to do whatever they want), though, because I tried to log in a couple weeks back and couldn't. I no longer consider the place worthy of being bothered with re-registering, so I came here. The CBMB is FAR too negative, and the way the populace turns on our players every time they deserve/need a new contract or get hurt sickens me. It's "Jay Cutler sucks" this, and "Matt Forte is overrated" that over there, and it's ALL TOO BORING at this point.

I'd imagine things are slow this week because there really isn't anything noteworthy going on. Things will pick up later this month...and hopefully Matt Forte getting a new deal or AT LEAST signing his tender will be a part of it...
