While I'm not entirely sure that they got rid of ALL the 7 step drops, they should be safely able to get rid of most of them.

They will still need the odd one if they find themselves in 3-and-15, but having Martz go away, Tice come in, the improved WR situation and Jay's new found ability (being allowed) to audible make it likely that they find themselves in a lot less of that type situation.

The Bears have the ability to be VERY dangerous this year. Jay and Brandon having worked together before is a plus, but I'm thinking it might take a few games before everything is kicking on all cylinders. And when it does... it should be impressive.

Actually, the Higgs Boson in this matter is Jeremy Bates.

There will be occasions where a 7-step drop would historically be used for longer developing "deep hit" plays, but this could easily be accomplished with something Cutler does well and is easier to block: Bootlegs/roll outs.

I'm so damn glad Martz is gone. I just about slit my wrists when Lovie brought him in (and who didn't see it coming a mile away)and like many fans, I was right to be concerned. That has always been one of my major issues with Lovie, bringing in buddies regardless of their ability. Nothing wrong with hiring friends when they are also very good for the job, but when they are not, that is a problem.

The 7-Step drop only works when you have an all-pro O-Line, which we do not and very few teams do. Hence the demise of the 7-step.

Last year we often witnessed the brilliant Martz innovation called the MST - "Many Step Drop" - where Cutler crapped his pants, while running MANY steps trying to save his skin - but ultimately got blasted by dlinemen and left like roadkill.

Martz loved this play. He must have because he ran it so often. Webb was really good executing this play. He just did his very best imitation of a turnstile. He had to stay put while DE's blew past him to beat the snot out of Cutler as he ran for his life from the 300+ pound defenders seeking to snap his bones with crushing tackles. Occasionally Webb would add a few false starts, just to make his game interesting.

Do you think Cutler will miss that "Many Step Drop" and Mad Mike too?

J'Marcus Webb might only give up 10 sacks instead of 10+ sacks.

Webb's mistakes are all mental. Fewer 7 step drops might get him in a rythym early, and limit his second guessing. Think Rex Grossman at LT.
