    Matt Blanchard

Hardin, Blanchard featured in final part of series

In the final part of the series, the Bears sign Blanchard to a contract after the Lake Zurich native participates in the rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.

“We watched how he carried himself,” said offensive coordinator Mike Tice. “We were very impressed with his poise. We were very impressed with how he took things from the meeting room and went out on the field and did those things. It was obvious that this young man knew football.”

Blanchard grew up in the Chicago area, starring at Lake Zurich High School. The 6-3, 225-pounder initially attended Northern Michigan before transferring to Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he won all 25 of his starts in two seasons while throwing 44 touchdown passes and just six interceptions.

“With the numbers as far as my position and everything going on, being unsigned and undrafted and all that stuff, I was just coming out here and looking to put my best foot forward,” Blanchard said. “I was looking forward to the opportunity to show my skill set.”

    CATCHING UP WITH...

Football | Catching up with Lake Zurich's Matt Blanchard at UW-Whitewater
September 08, 2011|By Mike Helfgot | Special to the Tribune

Matt Blanchard waited years for his time to pass. It didn't really come at Lake Zurich, where he ran the triple option all the way to the 2006 Class 7A state championship game.

Six-foot-3 and strong, he got pegged as an athlete rather than a quarterback by recruiters, so he chose Northern Michigan for a chance to play quarterback, but it didn't happen there either.
Now a senior at Wisconsin-Whitewater, Blanchard is not only the leader of the team with the longest winning streak in all of NCAA football at 31 games.

Eleven games as a Division III starting quarterback, and he has the attention of the NFL. "I've never been around a quarterback who had one interception in 10 games," UW-Whitewater coach Lance Leipold said. "With his pure numbers statistically, his size, his strength, the measurables so to speak, right now there are people coming in to evaluate him. That is a big competitive step from the Division III level, but a fair amount of teams have come in, and right now he is on their list." Blanchard threw for 2,132 yards on 72.4-percent passing with 21 touchdowns and one interception in 10 games last season, but the one pick was awfully costly. His thumb hit a helmet on the follow-through, and he did not play again. For the second straight season, he watched the Warhawks win the national championship from the sideline.

"It was tough to miss out, but we have a real talented team here, and that's what it's about," Blanchard said. "I've definitely had a fun ride here. If you would have told me we'd be 31-0, I'd have said you're crazy." You would love to have four years of starting, but I have no problem admitting that when I got to Northern Michigan, I wasn't ready for the offense we were running.
"When the transfer came, I wanted to go to a school that had a depth chart that gave me a window of opportunity to play. You've got to wait your turn in a successful program like this. Two years to start is a blessing."

Year 2 began with a 26-7 victory over Wisconsin-La Crosse in which Blanchard threw for 248 yards on 18-for-30 passing without a touchdown or an interception. He will student teach in the spring to complete his physical education degree, but there's a more glamorous job he's auditioning for first.

"College is a lot different than high school recruiting, where your junior year is the most important," Blanchard said. "You can be a one-year wonder guy and get drafted."

    Matt Blanchard file
    College: Wisconsin-Whitewater.
    Class: Senior.
    High school: Lake Zurich.
    Position: QB.
Stats: 11-0 as starter. Threw for 2,132 yards on 72.4-percent passing with 21 touchdowns and one interception in 10 games as a junior.
FYI: His older brother Derek Blanchard also won two Division III national championships as an offensive lineman for Mount Union.

Dragged these two articles over to share.... And after watching the last episode of rookie training camp from www.chicagobears.com, it got me interested on what some of you from Chi-Town might think about Blanchard. Is Matt anything more than a camp arm? Anyone followed his Lake Zurich Highschool or college career?

Obviously he is doing something right, coaches talked him up (expected), signed, lasted this far against odds, and the clips show him in a good light.

Curious on this boards take? It's always a good time panning for gold.

I know it is a huge jump for a QB to go from D-III to the NFL. It's probably the most difficult position to make that jump. This guy looks like a "project" worth keeping on the practice squad to develop. We have 4 QB's on the roster now: Cutler, Campbell, McCown & this guy, Matt Blanchard. Campbell will be gone after this season. We were lucky to get him this one year. We need to be developing a "young talent" if for nothing else than to be a reliable future backup to Cutler. Blanchard has been a winner at every level his entire life. If ever a QB had that "it" factor - this is that guy.

But the Bears will have to invest a couple of years into developing him into a guy who can step into a game if Cutler goes down - and not pull a "Hanie" for us. I hope we keep this guy (and if we do put him on the PS, I hope nobody steals him from us).

In back-to-back championship seasons, Wisconsin-Whitewater's Matt Blanchard went 25-0 as a starter with 44 touchdowns and five interceptions.
At Wisconsin’s pro day earlier this month, star quarterback Russell Wilson wowed scouts with his athleticism, accuracy and ability to throw on the move.

When Wilson and the Badgers’ other prospects hit the showers, Wisconsin’s small-school players got their chance.
Wisconsin-Whitewater’s championship quarterback, Matt Blanchard, sat through Wilson’s workout and rewarded the scouts who stuck around with an impressive performance of his own.

“It was a great experience. It was a lot of fun,” Blanchard told Packer Report. “We got there a little early and I was able to watch the Madison guys work out. It looked as though all the scouts stuck around to watch us, and I think a lot of us put up some good numbers. I was really happy with how I performed throwing the ball. I thought I performed up to my expectations and maybe heightened an awareness around my name among some other teams and sparked a little more interest.”

Blanchard put up a lot of impressive numbers for the Warhawks, including 70.4 percent accuracy with 44 touchdown passes against five interceptions in his two seasons as the starter. Most impressive is a career record of 25-0 as Whitewater won its second and third consecutive Division III national championships.

Blanchard went to Whitewater to get an education and win championships – the Warhawks and Mount Union have faced each other in the last seven Division III title games. It wasn’t until before his junior season, when a New York Jets scout arrived on campus to watch film and put Blanchard and his fellow juniors through a Scouting Combine-style workout called a junior day, that he started dreaming the impossible dream.

“After that and having some conversations with him and my coaches, going into the offseason of my junior year, it was like, wow, this is an opportunity that’s really close,” Blanchard said. “The biggest thing for me was to stay healthy and play well for my team and let everything else take care of itself. Sure enough, we had a great season and I put up some good numbers and everything’s working out the way I wanted it to.”

After the season, Blanchard and fellow Division III quarterback Alex Tanney (Monmouth) played at the Players All-Star Classic in Little Rock, Ark. At 6-foot-3, Blanchard has prototypical size, and while he’s not as fast as Wilson, his 40-yard time of 4.69 was superb.

The all-star game was a big deal in helping Blanchard show he can compete against NFL-caliber competition.

“The biggest thing was playing down in Little Rock, I was able to answer those questions,” he said. “Being able to play with other prospects in this draft, I thought I played well with those guys. Being a 6-3 guy and having the measurables, I thought I could play at that level. I’ve always looked at it as, it doesn’t matter how you start college or how you start this process, it’s all about how you finish. I felt like I answered a lot of those questions, and if they ask me, I use it to my advantage and play with a chip on my shoulder. I enjoy having that kind of card just because I can surprise a lot of people.”

To prepare for his pro day and the draft process, Blanchard spent about five weeks working out with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers receiver Yo Murphy’s Hybrid Sports Performance facility in Tampa, Fla. Blanchard is not expected to get drafted but he’ll find his way onto an offseason roster, either as a free agent or a rookie tryout camp.

“It’s going to be great,” Blanchard said. “It’s something that I’ve wanted to do my entire life. At Whitewater, you don’t plan on an NFL career but the stars are aligning right now. Whenever I get an opportunity, I’m going to have to seize it and make the most of it.”

And to think he beat out Enderle w/o costing us a draft pick . He'll take a while to develop but it will be interesting to see how he turns out.

I really think this kid has what it takes to be a good Qb in the NFL. Don't know if he could ever be the starting QB for the Chicago Bears, but might be the guy that can back up our starter for years to come. And he is not a JA pick can we ask for anything more.

I guess this is the part I'm struggling with: No. 1 and 2 are locked down J. McCown is 33 with a one year deal. I understand having 4 QB's for camp, but not the roster... So I'm just wondering if he has a legit shot at beating out McCown, or is Matt just one of those that stoodout @ rookie camp to be dangled and shopped around during preseason? I'm no superfan so correct flaws in my thinking... only second off season I've followed. Trying to break it down.

It's not like the bar is set very high for that.... other than Cutler, I'd say that a tree stump would be right there in the running with our previous QBs.

Way to kill my dream, I was dreaming that now that we have a real QB and know what one looks like in a Bears uniform. We would look for the same when the time comes to get a new QB. But your right, unless Emery knows how to pick a good QB we don't stand a chance of getting it right two times in a row.

QB is one position our organization simply doesn't have a good eye for.

We have a better environment now to develop a young QB. Better OC, Bates, receivers, solid veteran QB's to learn from. It is a better situation for a young guy to learn his craft. The PS is perfect for Blanchard this season. Then move him to be our #3 QB in 2013. If he develops into a solid QB over these two years, then move him into our #2 slot in 2014 as backup to Cutler.
