Expectations are high for Kellen Davis

Expectations are high for Kellen Davis
In the fourth of nine position previews in advance of training camp, coach Mike DeBord discusses Bears tight ends with ChicagoBears.com senior writer Larry Mayer:

LM: Bears coach Lovie Smith has said that he has high expectations for Kellen Davis. What do you hope to see from him and what kind of potential do you think Kellen has?

MD: “He has great potential. No. 1, it starts with his work ethic. He’s worked extremely hard on and off the field to learn his plays and the concepts on offense. I really believe that now he’ll get highlighted in this offense in the throw game. We’ll do a lot of things where he has an opportunity to catch a lot of balls. I expect him to have a great year.”

LM: How big of a contributor do you expect Kellen to be as a blocker and receiver?

MD: “Last year he proved himself as a blocker without a doubt. One of our best plays was running the ball outside, and a lot of it started with him. Now he’ll be more highlighted in the pass offense, so I think he’ll be able to show all of his abilities.”

LM: Speaking of those abilities, what are Kellen’s strengths as a player?

MD: “He has great size and he’s very strong. He’s a really good technician in the run game with his footwork and his hands. So he’s a strong, powerful player, and then in the pass game he’s got really deceptive speed. He can run and get down the field. He’s also athletic where he can sit in zones and get the ball that way. Kellen has a lot of ability because of his strength, his power and his quickness and speed.”

LM: What are your expectations for Matt Spaeth?

MD: “Matt has proven himself in this league as a blocker. He did very well in that aspect of the game for us last season. In the OTAs, he showed that he can be a good pass receiver as well. He has really improved his running and his overall speed compared to last year. I look for him to be a good player. He’ll be a guy that we can utilize.”

LM: Matt hasn’t caught a lot of passes in the past, but that doesn’t really reflect his value to the team. How important is it for him to continue to contribute as a blocker?

MD: “It’s very important because it allows us to balance defenses up and gives us the ability to run to Kellen or to run to Matt. It’s always big to create good balance in the run game.”

LM: What are your expectations for Kyle Adams?

MD: “Kyle had a great offseason in the OTAs and minicamp. He has a great feel in the passing game. He does a great job of sitting in zones, reacting and moving to the next zone. He just has a great feel for the game. He was playing for us last year when he got hurt. The big thing with him is how physical he is training camp and the preseason games and working hard to stay healthy.”

LM: What have been your impressions of rookie Evan Rodriguez?

MD: “We threw our entire offense at him in OTAs and minicamp, so it was a learning process for him. It’s new terminology and sometimes it’s new techniques. All he did in the offseason was continue to get better with each practice. Training camp will be big for him.”

LM: What are you looking for from Rodriguez in camp and the preseason?

MD: “You don’t have pads on in the offseason, so you can’t really test anyone’s physical play. So in training camp and in the preseason games, we’re going to see how physical he is, how well he blocks on the line of scrimmage or in the backfield or out wide. He's going to have to prove himself as a blocker. In the passing game, you can evaluate him in the offseason because you’re able to see him run and catch. The big thing for him is how much he will retain from the offseason and bring into training camp so he can really just take off and go. That’s going to be important for him.”

I expect the Bears to have one of the best TE corps in the NFL this year. We have quality TE's and quality depth at the position. They can block AND be solid receivers. Even Spaeth has solid receiving skills. He just hasn't been utilized that way so far. Davis is a machine catching passes (if you can get to training camp this year, spend time watching Davis catch Cutler's passes. Highlight reel stuff to watch him work).

There is a synergy effect when you start adding weapons like WR Brandon Marshall into the mix. Suddenly every one gets better in this offense. Martz didn't believe in using TE's as receivers in his offensive scheme. Watch Mike Tice make them a cornerstone of the offense this year. Cutler will have a great year ripping and gashing opposing defenses all day long, every game.

I can't wait to see this unfold. It's a GREAT time to be a Chicago Bears fan.

Me, personally, haven't seen the team loaded with talent this much since the 80's. SB or BUST is how I feel.

Here's the deal with me. And I know it's crazy, but I can't help it. I've seen so many promising seasons go down the toilet over the years, that I'm like looking for the unexpected season-killing surprise to drop on us. It's like it's a "too good to be true" type of thing.

All I can think of, that might kill our season, is that the offensive line can't protect Cutler enough for him to USE these wonderful new weapons on offense. I go back and forth on this one every day. Some days I think we're going to be fine on the oline. I can rationalize it's going to be OK. But then my brain does the "flash backs" to seeing Webb's turnstile play (and sometimes the others too).

Some here say that we had a great record before Cutler was hurt - even with this oline. And that's true. But I believe Cutler did all of that on his own and we won in spite of the oline - not because they played well. Even Forte's runs were often his effort alone, and not due to big holes being opened up by the oline. And maybe Cutler and Forte can go it alone again this season without a decent oline. You never know.

I'm excited about the season (bigtime), but still, I'm going to worry about stuff until we hoist that Lombardi Trophy. That's just my "way" as a fan. I can't help it.

What I see that is exciting is the way WR will be used and the TE will be re-employed in a different way. There will be a good window where teams will have some trouble adjusting. And that isn't even counting mismatches and the like.

So even if there is some fits and starts and some time to adjust to the new scheme I feel that we will be on the better end of things for once as there will be more adjustments to us than to them.

I'm taking a wait and see , I'll believe it when I see it , approach with these TE's . There's potential , and Martz isn't calling the plays anymore ..... but none of these guys has proven much yet as far as consistently putting up even solid pass catching numbers goes. But I am hopeful .
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

I've been thinking about this lately, but seeing how Evan Rodriguez was drafted as an H-back and with Tice having had Kleinsasser as a Bear killer when he was with the Vikes, we may have something similar there. I think Spaeth is a really good blocker (but when contracts are coming up, could see him getting cut), but Kellen Davis never wowed me. But then I looked at this highlight video:

The thing that impressed me is that he doesn't fall down like Greg Olsen immediately on contact.

That's a great video Henry, thanks for posting it. Davis is a great receiver, we just need to use him more. He is a HUGE man. If you see him in person (at training camp) he's mammoth in size.

He's a better TE now, than Olsen. Plus he can block. Cutler seems to have a chemistry building with him too.

Hopefully he's our Jimmy Graham this year. (I'm snatching him up in FF after seeing that, now)
