    Catching Up with Chris Summers

    Practice squad?

    LINK to the article

There is an audio link on the original page, of the interview, that I couldn't cut and paste here.
    It's worth listening to.

Flames All-America wide receiver Chris Summers will be one of three Liberty football alums looking to make their professional mark in the NFL this upcoming season.

Along with former quarterback Mike Brown (featured on Monday), Summers signed a free agent contract shortly following the conclusion of the 2012 NFL Draft in April. Brown inked his deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars, while Summers signed a contract with the Chicago Bears.

Since April, Summers has continued to impress Chicago Bears' head coach Lovie Smith and his staff with his size and speed, two attributes that helped him rewrite Liberty's wide receiving record books.

When Summers left the field for the final time last November, the Jacksonville, Fla., native had set several new receiving records. The 6-4 wide out finished his days in a Liberty uniform as the program's all-time career leader in receptions (188), receiving yards (2,712) and touchdowns (26).

Recently, Flames Sports Network reporter Nick Pierce had a chance to catch up with Summers to talk with him about chasing his dream of playing football at the highest level.

Be sure to check back in coming weeks on LibertyFlames.com when Pierce sits down with Rashad Jennings, Liberty's longest tenure NFL player who will be entering his fourth season with the Jacksonville Jaguars this August.

I'm trying to learn about these signed UDFA's, and I am having a hard time. WR core is tough to make right now, one bad day of camp and your out. Sounds like Summers has done very well, but not only are 4 reciever spots locked down, there are great special teams players the team needs filling backup roles under the reciever label. ST depends on it and your not going to keep all of the best recievers on the roster because of it.

I always cheer for the underdogs, and its sad how little chance some of these smaller school/udfa guys get...

I remember two years ago watching a preseason game in 2010 where the unknown Victor Cruz absolutely killed it against the Jets. During the portion he played Victor scored three touchdowns, including a one handed toe tapping catch on the sideline that even Rex Ryan commented on afterwards. I follow up a couple days later and the comments I dug up left me wondering. I mean seriously,...may have earned a spot on the practice squad, other teams taking notice, got some good film out there... Really? I know the Giants recieving core was legit, but I couldn't stop thinking that's one big ass hill you gotta climb to make the roster. Anyways Cruz disappears again for the year, I guess he made the roster, was dumped to IR, and then comes the 2011 season: I suppose the Giants are glad they hung on, NOW.

It is just one aspect of this league I'm getting used to. Obviously Summers has shown the staff something other than being 6'5". Would or will the Bears staff share their honest evaluations of his play? Do they try to hide him under a rock? Showcase for others? I'm not sure, I'm learning but mostly I'm finding how hard it is to get opportunities in the league if your not in the upper half of the draft.

The guy has all kinds of size and speed and I hope we can hide him on the PS this year while he learns the game at this level. He seems to be the new prototype for what the Bears are looking for in WR's so to me he has a good chance of sticking around. Seems like there were some good reports on him from the rookie OTA's.

I thought Emery had an exceptional offseason both in the draft and in free agency but he's also found what look to be a couple of gems in this group of UDFA's as well. This kid and the OLineman, James Brown, impressed some of the coaches during the OTA's. Hopefully we can find a spot for these guys and let them develop. I hate to lose good prospects to a numbers game.

Mo and I were kind of discussing what's gonna happen to the core rosters with a big contract like Forte's being done, those like Pep's and Marshall's that are already on the books and guys like Urlacher, Cutler and some of the young guys coming off their rookie deals who need to be extended. We've got quite a few hitting free agency next year alone.

There's some cap space and Cliff Stein is a genius at juggling amounts into years where we have some room to spare. I'll bet Cutler's new deal tends to pay the big money in 2015 and after when guys like Pep, Urlacher and Briggs have hug it up. But despite that there will be a lot of mid level vets making $2.5 to $3.5 mil per year who'll need to be replaced with younger cheaper guys soon.

The new CBA makes drafting talent the way to go. For instance. What Gabe Carmi gets over 4 years is less than a pro bowl OT makes in one. Same with McClellin. We need to keep drafting well in rounds 1-3 for first year starters and young prospects and find vet FA's who can upgrade positions without having to break the bank. I though Emery did a great job of finding those type of players this spring.

The cap will rise but not at the rate that it has been over the past five or six year and there may be other years like this one where it barely increases at all so teams won't be able to seriously back end deals and wait for cap increases to bail them out. That's why these guys are all trying to get as much in the way of guarantees as they can. I think we'll see a lot more mid and high level talent hit FA in the coming years just because those guys become "cap casualties".

Having a good GM and scouting staff who can dig up "finds" and a cap specialist like Cliff Stein are gonna be as important as having a great HC and a franchise QB.

We'll see how he actually does in the preseason. I no longer get excited about UDFAs until I see them do something in the preseason.

True. Over the years we've seen a lot of guys like him come and go. He could be something or he could turn out to be this years Andy Fantuz. LOL

Great though, that they brought him to camp. We have nothing to lose, and everything to gain here. If he's not NFL material, cut him. If he's a future guy who would be solid with more maturing, put him on the PS. If he surprises everyone and looks solid for depth, then keep him on the 53 man roster.

There's no down side. I love it.

It's been a veritable feast or famine at wr these past few years. Now we seemingly have so many we have to turn a few down. Just like getting a GF then six others line up asking you out.
Arguing on the internet is like winning the special olympics, even if you win your still messed up.

If the odds are that good where you live shorty I'm movin' into the neighborhood.

These days if Dags took me with him to Hooter's the girls would be comin' up to me sayin", "Oh you're so cute." "You remind me so much of my Dad".

Emery has added so much talent in his short tenure that I'm actually in shock. So used the the failings of the "Angler" in this area that it's almost surreal. I hope we can stash some of them on the P.S. and other teams dont steal them away until we can bring them on board.

OMC, that is exactly how I feel. It's like a dream come true so far. I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. Like it's too good to be true. Like something "bad" will happen now to crush our hope again........like Emery gets arrested for being a secret ax murderer, or joins a monastery in Africa or something that ends the dream
