Good to see this group working to get better. If Webb doesn't want to be a starter, well hope he likes sitting a lot more then playing b/c Williams is motivated enough to want to get back to the position he was slotted to play originally. Williams CAN beat an unmotivated Webb hands down. The OL will be better for it if all are on the same page.

This is where Kreutz's nastiness would have kicked in and Webb would be there working out w/the group out of sheer terror.

That's exactly the way I feel. I don't know Tices style, but I get mad when I read this stuff. If you don't care as much as the other guys, then it won't matter as much when you are on the bench and they are on the field reaping the rewards of the time they put in. I still want the best lineman to win, but both Williams and Webb seem to be doing all they can to make sure that person is Williams.

I mean, really, there have been thousands of guys (in every sport, not just football) that have all the physical gifts in the world, but can't get their mind right and develop the commitment that it takes to play at the level they need to. By contrast, there have likely been even more that have had their mind right and put in the time and effort to maximize their potential, but they simply were not blessed with the physical attributes to succeed.
Makes me think: if Sanz had Webb's ability at WR, or Webb had Sanz's dedication at LT, my god we'd be set.

Anyhoo, I remember Larry Fitzgerald calling Michael Floyd out on twitter one day for not doing the WR practices he organized. He rescinded it the next day, because the point was made. Garza should consider a similar method.
Why? Garza didn't call out JWebb. The reporter made that comment.

As for JWebb himself, and as others have pointed out, the 'sometimes' comment fit in neatly with what we've all seen of and heard about this kid since he was signed; tons of potential, can't get his ass off the sofa.

I hope-to-geebus CWill blows him away early on in TC. Settle the position immediately and lock it down (with a special plea for the injury bug to stay far away), I wanna see him getting congratulatory head pats from Pep during scrimmages. If that doesn't light the fire we all think is needed, nothing will. Win-win for the line and The Bears.

I'm glad Garza has found his calling.

Yes.....Garza seems to have taken over as the emotional leader of that line now. These are his guys and he's showing some great leadership. Just as long as he's keeps it up and insists that they do better I have no worries. Pretty soon it will fall into line. There's a nice blend of youth and experience there to work with.

As for J'Marcus Webb he's just doing what he's been doing for two years. Letting his immaturity show. If he'd been able to finish his college career at Texas I doubt he'd be so much this way but then again if he had he wouldn't have been a 7th round pick. I think he's had it too easy. His size and physical abilities allowed him to dominate at West Bumfuck A&M and it just hasn't sunk in yet that alone won't get him by in the NFL.

Like I've said he needs to lose his constituency with Tice and grab some pine for another year or two while he matures. He should be a perfect swing tackle since he has the size and athleticism to play either side of the line and I really hope that's how it ends up. That may do more to actually save his career than cost him his career. If he's serious about an NFL career losing his starting role and needing to earn it back may be the best thing that could happen.
I'm getting to that age where a lifetime warranty just doesn't mean as much to me anymore as an afternoon nap.

This just reinforces the suspicions I've had about Webb all along. He needs to sit and be the backup.

    Please, please make the starters...

    CWill--Spencer--Garza--Louis--Carimi

That's our "best 5" playing in the best spots.

Look, I'd like Webb to be a workout warrior too, but I can't help but wonder a few things.

1st - this guy is a 7th rounder......does he have the cashesh to pay for specialized training like this all the time? Along that same vein, is it possible he is out there working another job (ala the pros of old) to keep the cashflow working in the right direction?

2nd - who says he isn't working out in some other fashion when he can't be there w/ the others?

3rd - does he live full time in the chicago area? If not, can he afford to fly back and forth (or drive for that matter)?

4th - does everyone remember that there was not offseason program at all last year before TC? Isn't it possible we will see a great deal of improvement just from having communications w/ coaches, workouts (even if only occasionally) w/ teammates and on his own, OTA's, minicamps?

I'm not giving the guy a pass, but rather just pointing out that a 7th rounder isn't exactly making bank like the other guys noted in the article. That may change his ability to participate to the satisfaction of a bunch of internet critics.

Before relegating him to "the pine" now, I'd prefer to see how he does in TC and the preseason.

    Good point.

I had a good friend years ago who's little brother got a minor league deal with the Phillies. He was a 6-3 lefty that could throw a 95 MPH heater and had a decent knuckle ball. He thought he was in fat city right out of high school bringing in $60,000/year in Triple A ($60 K back 30 years ago was a lot more than it is now). In the off season, he was always surrounded by the hottest babes, but he also loved the party life, lived at home with Mom and Dad, slept in till Noon every day and vegitated until it was time to go out again the next night. He never worked out (well, maybe once every couple of weeks, always thought he was going to make it with what he had. He got fat a lazy and lost it all. Some guys just don't have the personal fortitude to match it all up and commit. I recall his brother hating him for everything he threw away and I don't blame him.

Thought this was a good observation and pertains to this thread:

What are you going to be looking for between J'Marcus Webb and Chris Williams in the competition for the starting job at left tackle?

"I hope it's the battle of the century. I hope it is the battle of the new millennium. I hope it is an incredible competition and it's impossible to make a choice until the day before the first game because they both perform and do so well. However, I don't know if we're going to get that luxury. One of these guys, if they stand out above the other, then your decision is going to be made for you and that is going to be the best thing for the Bears. I think if both of them struggle through preseason, especially what you need out of them in their limited roles in the preseason game action … I hope one of them does stand out above the other to make the decision easy."

It would be best for the Bears if Webb gets it together and can keep the LT position. By that I mean he begins being consistently solid all season long. He could do it. If (and I mean IF) he could pull it together, he has better physical tools than C.Will. This isn't a diss on Williams, because I think he can be decent too. I just don't see the ceiling in Williams that I see in Webb.

The Bears have invested a lot of time and effort into developing Webb. It would be tragic to not have him fulfill his significant raw potential. If he doesn't get it together this season, then I agree with Soul (I think it was Soul, or maybe Ric), that some time on the bench may help him get it together down the road.
