"Bears seeing benefit of the audible"

Imagine. Being allowed to use an audible like other teams have used for a zillion years now. I think Mad Mike Martz must have driven his horse and buggy to Bourbonnais training camp each year & preached the "evils" of a modern NFL offense.

    LINK to the article

The Chicago Bears offense under former coordinator Mike Martz had numerous strengths and weaknesses last season, but one aspect of new coordinator Mike Tice's attack has been met with universal applause from players: The audible.

"It's just that when we're running the plays that we're running, we're going to actually look at the defense," RT Gabe Carimi said.

The last two seasons, the Bears lined up and ran the play regardless of the defense. There was no changing of plays at the line, only some blocking assignment switches made by C Roberto Garza.

"I mean, a smart quarterback like Jay (Cutler), he's going to be able make the calls on what we're going to be doing," Carimi said.

When Cutler went to the line in the past two years, he ran the play or wasted a timeout. The Bears led the league last season in timeouts taken in the first and third quarters, obviously an indication of confusion over the way to attack.

Offensive linemen think the new system will make them more effective pass blockers, just as fewer seven-step pass drops are expected to do. From now on, there should also be fewer situations where a lineman is in a no-win pass blocking matchup.

I think Martz is the only person on this planet who doesn't realize that a QB having the ability to audible is essential to his success. To just run out on the field with a play regardless of the defensive alignment is absolutely ridiculous.

100% agree. Martz could have taken his offense to the nth degree if he could have used audibles, eliminated the 7 step drops, utilized the audible, and for Pete's sake used the TE's. This season will show a very sharp contrast on what was needed imo.

Just look at what Peyton Manning can do with just an audible. It's an important weapon: to bluff, to mismatch, to control the tempo, to mentally distract.

Anyone else remember how PM would call an audible and BU would change the defense, and they would go back and forth right up to the snap. Maybe just me, but I love that in football. Two great player having a chess match.

Just her Double Z on the score w/Holmes. He was saying Cutler really doesn't like to call them that often, and is more comfortable that the right call is going to be made the first time. But the option is definately better then having to call a timeout or going w/a play you know is broken from the start.

Martz is an arrogant, egotistical, asshole who never could bring himself to listen or to delegate any authority. He's lucky the Bears hired him when they did or he'd have been out of football two years before this. The guy was living off a 10+ year old rep still playing an offense that won't work and he wouldn't adapt it so that it would.

An most of us know nothing, meatball, "just don't get it" fans knew it before he was even hired. We also know he was going to be the hire a month before it was done. Yet, he was hired anyway. I lost a lot of hair that day. Ah, it's all water under the bridge now. Can't wait for this season to begin. Da boy and I are headed to TC in about 10 days.
