BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Chicago Bears wide receivers coach Darryl Drake thinks the club's last offensive scheme ignored Devin Hester, which resulted in the wideout posting his lowest receiving numbers since 2007. Drake said he expects Hester to surpass the 26 catches for 369 yards he totaled in 2011 this upcoming season.

"If he stays healthy, I hope so," Drake said. "If he doesn't have more then we failed him. But I'm sure he'll have more than 26 [receptions]. Only time he had 26 was when? Last year. We didn't throw it to him. Who's fault was that? Wasn't his. Wasn't mine."
Hester's productivity at wide receiver took a sharp hit after Mike Martz was hired as Chicago's offensive coordinator prior to the 2010 season. Hester went from hauling in at least 50 passes in 2008 (51) and 2009 (57), to catching just 40 balls in Martz's first year on the job followed by the meager 26 receptions last season, after which Martz was dimissed.
"When you've got a great player, you've got to feed him," Drake said. "If Michael Jordan didn't touch the ball he'd have problems, you know because he would demand it. You've got to get him the ball, and you've got to feed him. And he's getting the ball, and he's feeling good about things right now."
The Bears began the offseason by promising to create a special package of plays for Hester in an effort to maximize the speedsters strengths and get him more involved in the offense. According to Drake, Hester responded to the increased role and in the estimation of the receivers coach, has been the most improved receiver since the end of last season.
"In every way possible...route running, everything, you just see it in everything he does right now," Drake said. "He understands it. I mean, it's bam, that's what you're seeing. If you watched practice today, how many times did he get covered? That's the difference. I think he's probably the most improved, in my opinion, but when it comes to Devin, I'm kind of prejudice, you guys know that. But I just see a lot of improvement in a lot of areas. He's no longer worrying about being the guy, you know, he's just playing."
Hester and Brandon Marshall lined up as the top two receivers during the Bears first training camp practice on Thursday.

Is that bolded part another not so subtle dig at Martz?

That dude made so many enemies. Also interesting that he set records for both the Lions and Bears with fewest rushing yards in a game...

I blame Martz for a lot of our ills on offense over the last two years, but I'm also realistic. Devin has been an unquestioned Superstar with his return abilities, but he was a bad Corner and he's been only average as a receiver. How many times have we all seen Devin wide open deep and Cutler puts it either right there or very close and Devin has dropped it. If Devin has improved, I'm all for it as I'm not sure (from all accounts I've read) you could find a nicer, more unassuming guy in that locker room. EVERYBODY loves the guy and he has given us fans more excitement than I've seen since the 85 team.

I just think we are all expecting a lot to think that so many guys have turned the corner all at once.

I'll still be living the "I'll believe it when I see it" approach to Devin's resurgence as a WR but it's not because I think he CAN'T do it. Cutler has had nothing but positives to say about him as well so we're not just hearing this from the coaches and it's not just because, as Urlacher said about something else, "it's the right thing to say".

He needs to show up every week and prove he's a "part of the plan" and maybe this time around he'll be just that. I made a comment yesterday that unlike other WR's who usually take 3 year to develop Devin hasn't exactly had the same benefits during his years others have had so maybe in his case it took a bit longer.

The past is the past. He's still the greatest return man ever to play the game and if they get him working well in this offense he's gonna cause trouble for the other guy every times he's on the field no matter how many passes he catches.

I saw this yesterday with my own eyes. He was our best receiver out there yesterday. Marshall gets a "pass" because he's new to the team and needs to get back on the same page with Cutler. But not even Bennett looked as solid as Hester receiving.

I think Hester is now at the point where he doesn't have to "think" about his routes. He just explodes off the line and uses his burst and moves naturally - like he does returning kicks. His moves on dbacks are sick man. Sick. And yesterday, after he caught passes, he'd juke the dback out, and own him.

Here's another point. We used Hester in the past with those stupid bubble passes and gimmick plays that fooled NOBODY on the defense. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. Hester needs to do just what he was doing yesterday. Explode into vertical. Make the killer moves. Catch the ball. Juke the dback out of his jock. Take it to the house.
    Go Bears!

Ya gotta love the fact that they're all coming out of the closet now as far as their criticism of Martz. Man I wished never have hired that guy. I'd have rather kept Turner than to have waste another two years developing that offense with Martz calling the shots.

In hindsight I think Martz hurt us more than Ron Turner.

Well I hope they've finally figured out where they need to use him - out wide where he can use his speed and away from the linebackers where he gets the jitters . Them dudes are big . Can't really fault the guy for that though ..... either you got it for playing in there or you don't . Let him play to his strengths. Now all he has to do is catch the ball and it'll be fine.
What should you call any : Fumble , Hold , Interception , Three and out , or Sack ?

    A " F.H.I.T.S " ? or a J'Marcus ?

No doubt about it. We're actually going back more in that direction now and just keeping some of the downfield stuff Tice likes as a holdover. Never should have hired the guys in the first place but that's the problem when you have a screwed up front office and guys with talent don't want to risk their rep coming here. Even Bates turned us down before when JA was still in charge.

Nobody says much but JA has pretty much disappeared from the NFL scene. I don't see him being signed as an analyst or being sought out for his league wide opinions like some have been. I doubt he would ever have lasted as long anywhere else as he did in Chicago. He was Mikey's hire and it seems the family waited until Mikey left to dump him. As many times as he's screwed up over the years maybe they thought they'd save him another embarrassment and wait until George took over before doing it.

Maybe I should say that there were worse GM's than JA but every time he pulled off a genius kind off move he seemed to offset it with three or four stupid ones so we got nowhere. We didn't sink the the bottom and have top ten picks five years in a row like the Lions and we didn't get to the top and stay there. Martz and JA were probably the two things about the Bears that frustrated me most over the past two years.

One would think JA would be perfect for ESPN, always go with the opposite of whats BELIEVED/ said.
