Webb is a 7th rd pick who played LT last year for the 1st time last year with no offseason. Some of you guys are so hard on these young players. For a guy playing his fuirst year he did a pretty good job. Webb is not a Top 10 #1 pick. He's a 7th rd pick that Tice clearly sees a great deal of upside in. They had that T from BUF that went to Philly and they could have used their #1 on a T. But they chose not too. That's because Emery and Tice and Lovie are smarter than the Bears fan base. In fact, I know the Bears fan base is not very intelligent at all. That's fine with me...as long as Webb truly wins the job comparatively in a FAIR competition. Based on his improved PLAY & PERFORMANCE not just "athletic potential" and over-confidence and favoritism. We need both an LT starter and a swing OT so what is the point in not waiting till at least 2 PS games have been played? It's not like both men couldnt benefit from some actual playing time in PS at the tackle position anyway.
Ultimately, the proof (for whoever the starter eventually is) will be regular season performance. Double digit sacks allowed and double digit penalties are not acceptable.
Who cares if Webb wins/won. Twice nothing is still nothing. All that matters is the LT can pass block, which we'll have to wait and see. Also how much HELP the LT gets to perform is also a telling sign of how good said player is.

We really don't know much about how good Webb is THIS season, or how much improvement Webb has made since last year. BPBB makes a couple of excellent points regarding Webb not having an off season last year, and I do agree it is madness to think a 7th round LT is going to shine his first year of starting at the position. Heck, he's still only 23 years old right now.
Tice isn't stupid. Neither is Emery. They wouldn't risk tanking the season by allowing Webb to start if he wasn't significantly improved over last year.
One other point. I have a lot of respect for C.Will after watching him play rock solid at LG last year. I believe he was our best offensive lineman, with consistently solid play all year long. If Webb beats out C.Will then that tells me something about Webb's improvement.
Make no mistake, Webb has had some brilliant games last year, along with his disaster games. That tells me he CAN play great at LT if he can become more consistent. By the way, today I was reading the Scout Inc report on Webb and they have him graded out as a good starter:
"Webb has outstanding size with good power and deceptive athleticism. He needs to improve his overall game to become a consistent lineman but has the size and raw talent to develop into an excellent offensive tackle."

JABF, and many have said he can improve; but that does'nt mean he will. And that doesn't change the fact that he sucked as bad much as most of BBPB's posts do....Haaaa just kiddin' pappa.
One scout called Benson one of the best pure runners he'd seen since OJ. Scouts thought Rex would be a good starter also; scouts can be wrong, flashes can mean that they can be bad also(rex) and physical attributes mean squat(currie and the pool jumper). Gotta see it on the field.
What turned many off was him not showing up to work w/the rest of the line when they were working on getting better on their own time. There is no doubt he COULD get better, and probably will, but that wouldn't be hard from last years performance, the question is how much will he improve.
One problem I do have w/Tice is that he keeps moving these guys around. Let Cwill play LG w/Louis. Let Webb/Gabe play tackle and bring in a swing guy. The line needs cohesion as much as it does talent.
I guess my point is not that he is good or bad. It's that we (fans) really don't know. Not for THIS year.
Ric, I totally agree with you about moving people around hurting the line. I think Tice believes we have a surplus of solid interior linemen and he could try to move C.Will back to tackle now. Maybe his solid play last season contributed to the Bears believing he could play decent tackle now.
But, heck, who knows. I do know, that I just want the LT problem "solved" this year. I don't care if they play a flea infested spider monkey there, if the guy can protect Cutler.

You are 100% right JABF99 that we have no idea how good Webb is going to be this season because he hasn't even played 1 game that matters. But I'll tell you, it becomes so annoying to constantly hear Bears fans be so cynical and so derisive towards anything that presents itself as positive about Webb. I mean its like these guys just want Webb to fail and they are all so much smarter than our coaches and front office people who know how important it is to have good protection on that left side. Some of these guys can't even be happy with anything positive that comes out about Webb. News comes out that Webb looks like he's taking control of the LT spot and immediately you have the same shitty attitude come out from all his detractors.
You know that's why I break a lot of people's balls on this site. Its because they're so damn negative aboutt his team and this is the best team they've put together all around in the past 20 years. Yet many of these guys are just blind to all the good things about this team and that some young players develop at different rates.
Any future signings of LT in the off season?
Webb is a RT.
Carimi on the other hand ... if he isnt nicked ... could be a LT.
If you had to protect CUTLER at LT ... would you put a first rounder or seventh rounder there?
