    LOL

ok, seriously, here is the way I see it. I could be wrong - hell my wife tells me I'm always wrong.

Tice likes Webb. I think he made an open competition to see if CWill could outplay him, but because of Webbs prototypical size (and perceived ceiling), I think CWill was going to have to seriously outplay Webb to get the spot. If they were close, Webb was going to get it. CWill was used as much to motivate Webb as he was to give Tice a look at his LT potential.

I'm with you guys. I have no idea how good Webb can be. I know he has the right size, but really in the NFL you also have to have the mental toughness, capacity and desire. I haven't seen that on a consistent basis from Webb. So when I pound on the guy I do it half jokingly just cuz. We all know that we need a good LT. I don't think we've seen his ceiling yet, but I do disagree on one thing -- I do think he was given a good chance last year. I won't say he sucked, but he wasn't all that good either. Can he get better? yeah he can and I think he will. I'm not sure he is the answer yet, but I'm not convinced he's not either.

I will say though that I think that the guys that were brought in to compete with him is not a good measure, We really didn't have anyone come in that I would say is better than average. So between the level of competition and the desire for Tice to realize Webbs potential, I think a good case can be made for why he is going to be the starter.

I guess what it comes down to for me is this. Is he our best LT right now? Probably with the possible exception of Carimi who is not going to be given that chance. Does that mean he is a great LT? No. Does that mean he won't be a great LT? No.

This year is going to tell us a lot about Webb and about Tice. Personally I think Tice has done a great job, but if Webb doesn't live up to Tice's hype, I've got a feeling that Emery could make some changes.

Despite all the crap I put on Webb, I'm 100% behind his being a great LT and winning the job.

How's that for seriousness? Now can I go back to bustin his balls? LOL!!

You're a lot smarter than you're pretending to be right now. Every opportunity was made available this offseason to replace Webb. They had that T from BUF that went to Philly and they could have used their #1 on a T. But they chose not too. That's because Emery and Tice and Lovie are smarter than the Bears fan base. In fact, I know the Bears fan base is not very intelligent at all. I still remember all the stupid crap I used to hear from them trying to run Cutler out of town when he got here and was throwing all those picks.

    Webb is a RT.

Carimi on the other hand ... if he isnt nicked ... could be a LT.

If you had to protect CUTLER at LT ... would you put a first rounder or seventh rounder there?
Jackie, it seems like there are always exceptions though. Many 1st rounders end up busts, and many late round picks surprise folks and turn out great. Even Hall of Fame players are often later round picks or even UFA's. So, I don't automatically rule out a player being great, just due to the fact he was a late round pick.

And for the Bears (and us fans) sake, I'm hoping Webb does turn out to be great. He's so young that we would have our LT foundation in place for several years to come. Gotta hope. It's that Jessie Jackson thing "Keep Hope Alive"

    I dunno JABF,

Do we want to take another chance at CUTLER being used as an experiment as to when the OL gels?

Cutler cant keep getting dusted like that forever.

I agree with you. There has to be better protection this year or we're screwed.

Round you were drafted does not dictate starter worthiness in this situation. How about I use a 6th rounder for QB and you use a 1st rounder? I'll get Brady and you can have Alex Smith.. or how about Ryan Leaf?

so the worst RT IN 2010 and worse LT IN 2011 is beating out a guy who couldnt cut it at LT so he got moved to LG and this is something to be excited for lol. This should propel Webb to pro bowl status for such an accomplishment

Motown, I get what you're saying, but honestly, young players can change SO much those first few years. What they did or did not do in 2010-11 doesn't necessarily "define"them for their entire career. Especially offensive linemen. Usually it takes 3 years or so to really get up to speed with their technique and overall game (I realize there are some exceptions to this).

One "positive" that I think about is the fact that Tice invested a lot of game reps in a VERY young Webb. There is no substitute for this priceless experience. He's still only 23 years old, yet he's had 30 games playing experience. While it was very painful to watch at times, it should pay off bigtime this year - his 3rd season.

That's why I believe it is entirely possible that he's a much improved LT this year. I can't wait to actually see him play.

This doesn't mean they'll be great this year (or ever) but it's reasonable to have that "wait and see" attitude before we kick them to the curb.

    YUP.

Papa, as far as Bears fans being dumb, I have to agree, there are some real meatheads. That isn't just Bear fans, but the population in general. It just materializes in fan forums from time to time, especially from those that are fans, but do not really understand the game. However, while I do STRONGLY agree that the coaches and management of any given NFL team is smarter than your typical fan and certainly know more about any given circumstance than any of us, they are still human and prone to human error just like the rest of us. Football is a business and these guys have jobs to protect. If you make a recommendation to your boss for a very important business deal, you want that deal to succeed do you not? Mike Tice personally scouted JWebb and sold Lovie on him, who in turn, also fell in love with him and sold Angelo on him in the 7th. They WANT him to do well and human nature suggests that they will give him every opportunity. By contrast, I believe I recall CWill being an Angelo love child, and he aint got no say no mo.

As for the off season opportunities to correct the situation, I think Emery felt like he had bigger problems to address in the WR corp. Ya can't fix everything in one off season, so I suspect Emery chose to beef up the receiving corp and see what pans out with the young ones that were defended by the coaching staff on the O-Line. I don't think it has anything to do with Emery having all this confidence in the O-Line we have, but more that he couldn't do everything at once.

I'm all for Webb if progresses, and like I said in another thread, there is validity to the argument that he could. A whole off season of prep; a new, more forgiving scheme; etc. However, the fact remains (and the past stats support the fact) that he has been one of the worst starting tackles in the league over the past two years and has single handedly killed more drives than any other player on this team in that time.

I hope he does improve and I'm guessing nearly every Bear fan agrees, but there is just as much evidence to suggest he will suck again as there is that he will improve.
The Greatest form of revenge is MASSIVE success.
