ESPN: Bears going with Webb, Carimi at OT. Competition over.

The epic battle for LT never happened:

"For Williams, the switch to right tackle only a few days into camp essentially ended his bid to unseat Webb on the left side."

Bears going with Webb, Carimi at OT

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. -- Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Mike Tice confirmed what most had already suspected: J'Marcus Webb (left) and Gabe Carimi (right) have secured the club's starting offensive tackle positions until further notice.

    [+] Enlarge
Bradley Leeb/US PresswireGabe Carimi (No. 72) and J'Marcus Webb (73) will start at the offensive tackle positions during the Bears' preseason opener on Thursday.

"As far as left and right tackle is concerned; we're going to go with Webb and Carimi for now," Tice said. "Gabe's knee is really going to come around. We're going to still evaluate the games and if one guy in a back up role steps up and has a great game, then we'll re-evaluate that."

Webb and veteran lineman Chris Williams spent the first handful of training camp workouts alternating days with the first team until Webb eventually began taking all the first-team reps last week with Williams starting to spell Carimi at right tackle. Carimi is still working his way back from a knee injury that forced him to miss almost all of his rookie campaign and required to procedures to correct. Webb started all 16 contests at left tackle last year after he made 12 starts at right tackle his rookie season.

"I thought that one guy would separate himself and really jump out there," Tice said. "I don't think that's really happened. So for me, let's keep status quo and see where the games take us. I'm not in a rush to change for changes sake. We hope that a guy in his third year, Webb, will step up and mature as a football player and as a person...will get better, as show us this means something to him.'

"At the same time, we know that Carimi is a very good player, it was just a matter of how long it was going to take for him to bounce back from the injury. He had a rough start [to camp] but it seemed to settle down. He told me he feels about eighty-percent better. That's a good thing. He's put together four good practices in a row."

For Williams, the switch to right tackle only a few days into camp essentially ended his bid to unseat Webb on the left side. Tice explained the motives behind the move.

"With Gabe's knee being sore a week ago, we had to get somebody over there with some experience to take some reps off of Gabe. He was in a little bit of a bad way there for a couple of days. We took some reps off of him which seemed to have worked. That kind of [interfered] with the competition. That's just the way it is. You got to play the hand you're dealt. You're dealt that hand, you make a decision, and you have to go with it. I wasn't going to put [young offensive tackles] James Brown or Cory Brandon over there to protect Jay Cutler. We have enough trouble doing it with the ones."

Center Roberto Garza, right guard Lance Louis and left guard Chris Spencer round out the Bears' first team offensive line, which is expected to see action Thursday night when the team opens up preseason play at home versus the Denver Broncos.

    Great news.

Not at all surprised that Louis locked down that RG spot. Kep your eye on him fellas. That's future Pro Bowler at G.

OK, now I think I get it. Nobody "won" a competition here. We are paper thin at tackle (experienced veteran guys who can play if needed). Paper thin.

Carimi's knee is not 100% (still). Webb is a "work in progress" and can't be moved (he's still trying to learn LT, and it would probably be crazy to make him a swing guy who then would have to know and back up BOTH tackle positions. It's just asking too much. Carimi has no backup at RT who can actually play as an experienced vet. C.Will is a smart player (you don't graduate from Vandy without being a pretty sharp guy). C.Will can probably play either tackle role if needed.

Sounds like Webb will need to take another step in development this year "as a football player and a person" according to Tice.

Well, I'm not nearly as confident in the OL after that article.

I think it boils down to this. We are loaded with solid interior linemen. But at the tackle positions we only have 3 guys with veteran experience (or in Carimi's case, the talent) who can play this year without getting Cutler completely killed:

    1. Webb is learning his job at LT and needs a boatload of improvement.

    2. Carimi is learning his job as RT and has a lot of potential but a knee that is 80% healed. It is not certain that his knee is not a chronic condition (that's why he had to have the additional surgery.....in hopes that this knee can be stabilized so not to be a chronic condition that would kill his NFL career).

    3. Chris Williams, a solid LG (but we have others who can play LG). C.Will is our only veteran who can swing to backup BOTH tackle positions.

After these 3 guys we have a promising Undrafted rookie who COULD be decent some day. But obviously you're not going to plug an UFA rookie into the hardest oline postion, and who incidentally is protecting our franchise QB.

Stay tuned. Our season needs the tackles to be solid.

Funny how ESPN came to this conclusion after Tice was interviewed and said nothing was solidified....and it would come down to who played the best after the games.
It's about as sound a ringing an endosement as I've everhears 8o

Yeah, sticking with my whole "I don't care if Reilly Reiff is projected as a RT in the NFL, put him or Carimi at LT, because the guy there is 33rd best in the league" argument. I would like to be proven wrong....

It's really disturbing to read (as I suspected) that Webb has likely "won" the LT job de facto not because he's made a huge leap but because he's been the least bad so far.

We have one guy (CW) who apparently works his ass off and is smart and good in the inside but who just can't hack it at LT.

And another guy (JW) who has a ton of raw athletic ability but so far lacks the work ethic and mental focus to realize his potential and demonstrate it.

Oh, and our stud RT still isn't 100% from an injury 11 months ago.

Shit. We all know the OL is the one Achilles heel that can derail a promising season. Not hitting the panic button yet but this isn't encouraging right now.

Holy shit how about some of you guys calm down already. Season has even started and you guys are hyperventilating about the smallest bullshit. Let the guys play a meaningful down before you rush to judgement.

Even that may not be the case. It may be that CWill had to be pulled to help out Carimi's knee. Have no clue if he was almost as good, just as good or even a little better than Webb. He could play RT and so they pulled him. What a crappy way to leave.

The bad news is that as of now, Webb does not appear to have taken a step forward. Tice is hoping he does. I'm sure Cutler is hoping the very same thing.
