Broncos @ Bears: Five things we learned

Five Things We Learned: Stay calm

CHICAGO -- Here are Five Things We Learned following the Chicago Bears’ 24-3 preseason loss to the Denver Broncos on Thursday:

    1. It's only the preseason: There is no need to throw a fit over how bad the Bears looked on offense Thursday night. It's the preseason. If this game was of any real consequence, Jay Cutler and Matt Forte would have been on the field and Mike Tice would have called some real plays, not the vanilla stuff we saw against the Broncos. That's not meant to excuse Michael Bush's fumble, or the false starts by J'Marcus Webb and Lance Louis, or the complete lack of a rushing attack. But keep it in perspective. How many times have we seen the Bears look awful in the preseason then be really good in the regular season, or vice versa? Thursday night is just a start, but it is fair to expect to see improvement next week against the Washington Redskins when Cutler is back at the helm.

    2. Webb is going to have to fight to keep his job: As Tice said earlier in the week, Webb is basically the starting left tackle right now by default because nobody else (Chris Williams) stepped up and outplayed him in camp. Most starters see limited time in the first preseason game, but not Webb, who was still on the field in the fourth quarter. Tice needs to keep applying pressure to Webb. Last year the former seventh-round draft pick went through the motions in the opening preseason game and got smoked by Buffalo's Shawne Merriman. Being forced to play deep into the second half of a meaningless exhibition game is a good way to remind Webb that nothing is promised to him.

    3. Shea McClellin's speed is legit: McClellin is far from a finished product. He is clearly still learning to defend the run, but you can see his potential as a situational pass rusher. His best of play of the night was when he chased down and sacked Broncos quarterback Caleb Hanie outside the pocket. Hanie happens to be a quick and mobile quarterback, but he had no shot to escape McClellin, who strongly finished the play. McClellin showed up a couple of other times throughout the game and even though he faced mostly backups, he had to come away encouraged about the way he performed in his first NFL game. Like the old saying goes: You can't coach speed.

    4. Peyton Manning needed this preseason game: Why else would the Broncos allow Manning to start and drop back to attempt seven passes? After sitting out last season, Manning appeared eager to test out his neck, stand in the pocket, and possibly absorb a few hits from a Bears' defense playing without Julius Peppers. Manning's numbers weren't pretty (4 of 7 for 44 yards and one interception) but the confidence he gained at Soldier Field should benefit him moving forward. And Hanie played a decent game as he fights to secure a spot on Denver's depth chart behind Manning. Hanie had a bad first series but bounced back to lead the Broncos on a scoring drive at the end of the first half.

    5. Bears are sticking to their story: Both general manager Phil Emery and coach Lovie Smith said before the game that Brian Urlacher is simply resting his knee and is due to rejoin the team soon. The Bears are off on Friday and return to camp on Saturday, so if Emery and Smith are telling the truth, there should be a No. 54 sighting in Bourbonnais sometime over the weekend. Hopefully that is the case. If Urlacher is away because of “personal reasons” then his privacy needs to be respected. But waiting all this time to give an official update did little to clear up the confusion or calm the masses. Why not say on Monday that Urlacher was going to be given time off to rest his knee, while at the same time explain he was also excused for personal reasons?

They were just running through plays on offense & not worried about the score. Just working the players, identifying where they need work & gauging where they all were at this early point of the pre-season. Also Tice isn't going to reveal too much of his playbook before the real season begins. That would just be stupid.

    1. The players, overall, looked about like you would expect at this early point - rusty, rough & timing not there yet.

    2. If you could look past some butt-ugly plays from time to time on the offensive line, you COULD clearly see that this oline will be 100% fine this season. Every guy on the line had a couple of rough plays, and the run blocking needs work (which is pretty typical at this point.....the run blocking seems to take longer to get "right" early in the pre-season). Webb is going to be fine at LT. Not great, but plenty good enough to protect Cutler. And all LT's get beat some of the time. I don't care WHO the LT is, you don't bat 1000 there. Not in the NFL.

    3. Shea surprised me. He's better than I thought at this point. With Peppers in, those two will feast on QB's this season. Bigtime.

    4. Jefferies also surprised me. I was floored by how much he's improved since the beginning of training camp. He ran good routes, has very decent speed for a big man, and clearly he has great hands. He will get more play this season than I originally thought. With Cutler as the QB, he'll be a serious weapon that defenses will have nightmares with. Holy cow, with him AND Brandon Marshall in, it should be fun to watch.

    5. You can sure tell a difference with Urlacher out. Nothing against Roach. I think he's a decent LB (average), but he's a HUGE dropoff from Urlacher. Better pray Urlacher stays healthy all season & during the post season. He's our "Cutler" on defense.

    6. Sanz will have to step it up or he's gone. It's not that he looked bad. But he's going to have to look better to make this roster.

    7. Major Wright had hamstring problems. Man, this guy just can't stay healthy.

    8. Both lines - "D" and "O" will get much better between now and the Colts game. They just need work, and game reps.

    9. I am SO glad we're meeting the Colts in game 1. This will be almost like a pre-season game, but with our starters going against #1's for a whole game. It should help immensely so we're hitting on all cylinders for that Green Bay game that follows.

    10. Special teams looked pretty rough at this point. Like the other units, it will get a lot better over the next few weeks.
    Trestman - Kromer - Tucker - DeCamillis

I'm looking forward to seeing these guys coach. Hope they're good.

I don't know about the OL(didn't see the game yet just going off morning reports of people that did) but the fact that Webb wasn't pulled until the 4th qtr speaks volumes about what the coaches think about his play.
Was he really getting beat by 2's and 3's? That's not a good sign guys, sorry.

Glad Shea looked good, but it was against 2's so take it w/a grain of salt.

Jeffery will be fine, he was hand picked for his size and hands as Cutlers #2 go up and get it guy.

How did Bell/Allen look? What about the rookie qb did he get any playing time?

For me, the biggest takeaway was Emery. Emery did well on his first two picks. I think both McClellin and Jeffrey will be good players. Really good players. If Emery can do this every draft, we will be on the road to recovery very quickly. And soon that road turns into the road to domination. Any team that can hit their high draft picks will at some point (assuming good coaches) start to dominate.

I purposely watched the oline all night. And then I watched the game back-to-back a 2nd time, focusing on the oline in general and Webb in particular. Here's what I saw.

Every man on that oline got beat some. Every man on the oline had a couple of real butt-ugly plays. But every guy looked pretty damned decent overall, considering this is the 1st pre-season game.

The lines (both the "D" and the "O" lines) typically need a ton of pre-season work before they look good. Training camp doesn't help like having actual game reps like last night. Game reps to the lines are like pure gold. There is nothing new here. This is the way the NFL has always been with line play. It's "reality 101" in the NFL.

All of the "Chicken Littles" are just that. Over-reacting. Let them pee their pants and panic. But reality is that Webb and the rest of the oline looked fairly decent for the 1st game of pre-season.

And no, there was no way the 2's and 3's were beating up Webb. Yes, he had a handful of bad plays, just like the others. They will clean this up.

One other thing. It was VERY smart on Tice's part to get max game reps for Webb. This is just smart football. Get the guy every stinking game rep you can before we meet the Colts. Work his butt to the bone, and we'll have a solid LT this year in Webb.

Anyway, that's my 2-cents worth. The "Chicken Littles" will disagree and predict doom anyway.

Why is everyone surprised that Jeffrey is doing well? From what I could tell, he had an amazing college career and his production only dropped because of quarterback issues. I figured that he would be starting at the #2 right away since Knox is out with Bennett taking the slot and Hester filling in here and there.

Usually it takes awhile for a new WR to adjust to the NFL play. It's fairly unusual to have a rookie WR excel that first season (yes, there are several exceptions to this, but they are exceptions).

I am really pleased with what I saw in Jefferies last night. Thrilled.

I realize that, but given the lack of talent behind Knox and Bennett that the Bears receivers has shown over the past couple of years, and with Knox injured and Bennett much more suited to a slot position I figured they would throw Alshon into the fire right away, especially since we they have a "tune-up" game against the Colts Week 1.

Could be. A lot will depend upon how he performs these next 3 pre-season games. He sure looked solid last night.
